The Epic Store barely does anything.

I mean I doubt it will do well either. It's got cult favorite written all over it.

Don't know how it looks like shit though.

It's another classic post-Max Payne Remedy "style over substance" game.
Here's what I see as major issues from what I've seen in multiple videos:

- You get all those fancy powers, but the very first thing you obtain in the game is an alien gun with infinite ammo and an insane rate of fire that lets you dispatch enemies (95% of them being basic ass bitch grunts with a gun) in under 1 sec. Said grunts drop health recovery stuff like candy.
- Character movement is janky as fuck.
- Enemy AI is complete trash. Gameplay is as subtle as just a shooting gallery (infinite ammo gun doesn't help).
- Camera in close up aim mode is god awful - aiming reticle is behind your character model more often than not.
- Get in a new zone (often with enemies popping in instantly), and they thought it'd be good to have a giant "POWER PLANT ZONE" or whatever text pop-up in your face, covering like 80% of the screen.
- Environments are endless repetitive grey corridors and rooms. The level design being metroidvania-like, it's just confusing, especially because the map is garbage.
- Plot is basically SCP and Lost had a baby.

Basically Sam Lake is still trying really hard to be the European Kojima, but he keeps forgetting that he should focus on tight gameplay first.

I'm downloading as we speak, cannot wait to play. Sounds like a lot of the issues are based on console and not PC but we shall see!

Ends with "it has this very like...$40 PS2 game kind of vibe to it, done with like you know- modern convention and production.  It's a bummer that it doesn't run great on every platform."

Definitely seems like a game to wait on and pick up discounted later on.

Sure hope its not Remedy's last gasp, even though I only like their Max Payne games. Though maybe that's part of the problem.

This is gonna flop 100%, even though I wish it didn't. Haven't seen or heard anyone talking about it on the " casual " forums I frequent.

Remedy makes such great games, it's too bad most if not all of them have been financial flops :(

Wish they didn't pull this Epic bullshit so I could support them at launch

Personally I think him playing the most of the game on a regular ps4 with plenty of drops and chugging makes him say that more than anything.

Doesn't help that the name is awful.

You would think the marketing department would tell them to not name thier game in a way that would clash with Google.

I even asked the dude at Gamestop today and he thought I was asking for an Xbox controller.

Yikes..that's just too much for the ol gal too handle I see. Wayy too many particles and shit. Game is very GPU intensive though.

Game plays like a fucking dream at 60fps. Day one when it hits other stores than Egs. Game seems dope af, some sort of mix between Inception, Alan Wake and Psi Ops

Remedy always prefers visual fidelity over performance. On PC, even with ray tracing on it runs very stable if you have the rig for it which is a huge improvement over Quantum Break (which unfortunately got slaughtered in Microsoft's UWP push).
Also, with Quantum Break they released some neat performance patches for the Xbox One version shortly after release so I expect the same thing here.

If you fuckers #cancel Remedy over a few frame-drops you're all dead to me.  :hmph

The frame drops happen because Remedy thought it'd be a great idea to have a metric fuckton of alpha and particles thrown left and right in a fast paced TPS which throws a dozen enemies at you in tiny rooms every other minute.

Because "can't see shit captain" is a great approach to gameplay.

That was not their decision. Had they done Alan Wake 2 when they wanted to do it, It would've ended up as a Kinect Flashlight mini-game but Microsoft never greenlit a sequel.
The sequel to Quantum Break also got binned. That's why they went back to doing their own thing and started with 'Control'. So they could do all the crazy shit they wanted without Microsoft cancelling shit.

They've recently bought back the Alan Wake IP from Microsoft. Plus Control has a lot of influences from Alan Wake already.
If enough people buy Remedy games, Alan Wake will return fairly soon.

Played about an hour and a half this morning.

It’s definitely a remedy game.

Story is good.

Combat is flashy, but very remedy. I tend to think their gameplay is serviceable but never something I would play without the narrative I wouldn’t really feel much drive to play.

Their combat always seems to missing something. I wouldn’t call it bad, but more like it’s just not balanced in a way that makes it super exciting.

Reminds me of Naughty Dog in that sense

The whole "ever-changing labyrinth" aspect of the game has me interested, but it just seems janky and worth waiting for patches/price drops since it doesn't appear to be very popular and probably will end up discounted within a month.

Is this game Epic Store exclusive for six months or is it longer?

Bought this on a whim and I'm digging it so far.

RTX features absolutely crush the performance, but then again I have to downscale on my 2080 to get acceptable performance even without it.

Not too crazy since I'm running a 4k monitor lol

1440p DLSS mostly max settings hovering between 65 - 80 FPS.

4K is amazing for Office and videos but I know games are gonna get more demanding as next gen starts so I'm planning to get a 1440p G-Sync monitor.

You could try 1080p, now that Nvidia added integer scaling to the driver (defaults to off, I believe). Would be as sharp as native res, unlike before.

Or use DLSS! Forgot about that one.

So far that ever changing labyrinth thing is just the layout of a room can change when you beat enemies. With 2 hours in, it’s more a stylistic thing than a gameplay thing. I also wouldn’t call it janky really, at least on the Xbox one X.

It seems to run fine. And the destruction is pretty impressive. I can’t really think of another game that has as many elements in its it environment that you can interact with and explode.

Yep. Running at 4K output with DLSS. The game actually lists the render resolution as 1440p with DLSS on. You don't really get an image quality hit cause the game has like 8 million blurry post process effects going on.

played a bit and was enjoying it, I'm annoyed I have a 2600x as its just under the recommended specs still managing 70 frames on ultra with RTX on so it's not too bad.

Just looks like I'll be upgrading my Ryzen to a 3900x sooner than I thought I would have been.

Ray-tracing is quite something. When you walk past a framed portrait on the wall and you see the reflection of a TV playing in the other side of the room.
It gives everything a very photo realistic almost non-game look to it. It takes some time to get used to at first but this game has such a daring yet pretty brutalist art direction.
There's nothing that quite looks like it. It's also amazing how the environment plays such a big role in the overall gameplay like it did in Alan Wake. Something that was sorta lacking in Quantum Break.

I get a feeling that like with Resident Evil 4 on the Cube this game is giving us a sort of a sneak peek of what next gen games will look and play like in terms of physics and ray tracing.

It's quite stunning how a 1080p render resolution, upscaled to 4k with DLSS is nearly indistinguishable from the native 4k setting or even the 1440p upscaled setting.
A 2070 Super gives me ~60 fps with all but one ray-tracing effect (debris RT) enabled which is perfectly fine for a story heavy 3rd person action game.
I don't have that stutter that Digital Foundry mentions so maybe that has something to do with the CPU or another part they're using?

This eye candy is why we build these rigs brehs  :rejoice

As for gameplay, the game gets significantly better when you acquire the first 3 powers or so and unlock multiple gun modes.
The areas also seem to become increasingly complex with more puzzle solving and environmental hazards and it opens up fairly quickly for further Metroid-esque exploring and backtracking.

Oh man Control just keeps getting better as you get more powerful and progress further into the FBC.
Which is one of the most awesome environments in any game I've played this generation.

Inception, The Matrix, Fincher, a whisper of Bioshock, Half-Life and Portal 2

This game has everything

Even on Xbox One X, this is close to the most visually impressive game I’ve ever played. It’s quite spectacular.
It certainly is. As far as third person shooters go, the only recent competition is Resident Evil 2 Remake but the materials are on another level of realism and the lighting and vfx particle effects are just insane.
Remedy also did an amazing job integrating the 'real' movie stuff seamlessly into the world and with the facial animations of the characters. The lip sync and expressions are damn near perfect.

The E3 demo of EA's new Star Wars game looked far less dynamic than this. It feels like an early next-gen game. I suppose that with all the ray tracing going on, they might opt to release a ray-traced console version for PS5/Xbox Two.
There isn't a single game with ray tracing implementation such as this. Metro and Battlefield V don't get close. The reflections are much higher res, something I didn't think possible with this gen of RT.
