Probably because there have been very, very few people in my life where if I talk to them in person I can't reason with them and have a good conversation with them. I honestly think the internet is a terrible place for discussion. So I know that if I sat down face-to-face with Merc, I could probably have a pretty good conversation with him. So I try not to let how the internet performs as a communication medium color too strongly how I feel about the people on the other side.

I will grant you that my first instinct is to hate the people promoting bad things, though. But the feeling passes as I step back and look at things from a broader perspective and think about the humans on the other side. Most people try to do good, I think. They're just usually misguided.

I usually need to put distance between myself and a nasty conversation on there before I can truly feel this idealistic "We're all humans and make mistakes" thing I've got going on right now. Just read through the whole thread and want to talk about a video criticism that watching the video should have answered.

Why did jim make a video where he seemed reluctant to talk about a game that he was dissapointed in?

Well he says right out, he didn’t want to and almost didn’t but his Patreon’s kept bugging him too.

Remember Jim doesn’t support himself on YouTube clicks. For all the criticism (and it applies to a lot of the other “dead horse beating” people complain about) his videos are what his audience wants. He does not do ad revenue. He is not part of the traditional games media or the new school networks and channel affiliations. He gets his money straight from patron donations, making those who donate his employers. It’s not about hot takes, controversy, algorithms or any of the lazy criticisms but about what the donors want and they wanted his opinion on this game so he made a video even though he didn’t want to and clearly stated that.

But does that matter, Jim inspires hate and logic will never stop those who want to hate him.

The only reason to give Sterling money is to get him a subscription to Weight Watchers

So what solution are you proposing here? I don't think that refusing to believe an accuser in favor of a corporation until we have 100% proof is a good idea at all. We could automatically lock all new threads for a week in case new information is ever to come in, but that's obviously absurd. We could demand every user posts evidence of their individual journalistic investigation of each topic before posting, but again that's absurd.

I've been using Era less and less these past few weeks just because of the overwhelming negativity that can be found here. It's depressing man. It's easy to say "Well just ignore those threads" but when most of the threads are full of some sort of controversy then you have to ask yourself "is it even worth browsing through anymore".

I love this place but it's becoming hard to stick around for as long as I used to. It feels like the place becomes less and less about actual "games" as the weeks go on.

I get where you're coming from, I get when you look at it from a certain angle, how could anyone say "mob justice" is a good thing? I'll give you one reason: accountability. The way things have always been is racists or Republicans or whoever is shit, they get away with it, they have their little moments and they spew their bullshit and everyone moves on. Usually there is no recourse for that, because everyone has the right to say what they want, so what can happen to them? nothing, really. Enter Twitter. Now, people have the tools to finally be able to converge and fight back against that stuff. People need to watch what they say, because there are millions who are ready to call them out if they trip up. People are finally *accountable* to a degree they were not before. That, to me, and to the people who historically haven't had as much of a voice, is a good thing.
