Nice takedown, but no one over there wants to hear it.

How can you not hate them?

Probably because there have been very, very few people in my life where if I talk to them in person I can't reason with them and have a good conversation with them. I honestly think the internet is a terrible place for discussion. So I know that if I sat down face-to-face with Merc, I could probably have a pretty good conversation with him. So I try not to let how the internet performs as a communication medium color too strongly how I feel about the people on the other side.

I will grant you that my first instinct is to hate the people promoting bad things, though. But the feeling passes as I step back and look at things from a broader perspective and think about the humans on the other side. Most people try to do good, I think. They're just usually misguided.

They literally lie to perma people who respond to merc/excel the wrong way.

Why would you do that? :doge

Nah, excel's protected, but Merc's more tolerated. He's the dude that hangs with the group but no one really likes. You can respond to him without risking too much of a ban. Mods don't really stick out their necks for him.

He's protected in a different way where he can say outrageous or just downright vile stuff and still not catch a ban. I still don't get how he didn't at least a short vacation for telling another member to go commit suicide.

I just want to highlight what I think is a good post:

Good for you, dude. And my favorite part about your apology is it isn't grovelling. You explained why you thought what you did, and it makes sense. You didn't prostrate yourself and beg for forgiveness, like RE often demands. It's just a simple apology for being (understandably) wrong.

Ron Howard: And that's how you narrate a story accept an apology

You're a good person dude.

Can't say that I share the same patience for the kind of shit that passes as discourse on REEE. Their kind of self-righteous, hypocritical grandstanding is just something that gets on my nerves way too much.

i get you, man. I lose patience with them all the time. I usually need to put distance between myself and a nasty conversation on there before I can truly feel this idealistic "We're all humans and make mistakes" thing I've got going on right now. I mean, I believe it, but I can't say I follow it even close to perfectly, especially in the heat of reading some of the crap they write. Especially the terrible bans.

And thanks the compliment. But I think it's more accurate to say that I sometimes display good qualities. I think that's true of nearly everyone.

  • Epic seemingly plagiarized a character from deviantArt
  • RE flips out, even attacking a guy who is friends with Epic's artist who made the character and fought for his friend's integrity. Everyone told him he was going to have to apologize.
  • Turns out the friend was right; whole thing was faked by the deviantArt artist, and Epic is in the clear. Some own up to it, eating crow and vowing to not knee-jerk react anymore; many others who had attacked the friend vanish from the thread, notably astro
  • RedMercury of course comes in to say that this occasional misfire of kneejerk reactions doesn't de-legitimize how great knee-jerk reactions usually are. People say they've learned a lesson or people should learn a lesson. "There's no lesson" RedMercury literally says.
  • I can't help myself and do my best to nail him to a wall.
  • This bulletpoint hasn't been written yet, but I suspect it's Merc trying to report me for some contrived rule I didn't break, and responding with faux-politeness and a "I just like discussing things haha" dismissal.

Just read through the whole thread and want to talk about a video criticism that watching the video should have answered.

Why did jim make a video where he seemed reluctant to talk about a game that he was dissapointed in?

Well he says right out, he didn’t want to and almost didn’t but his Patreon’s kept bugging him too.

Remember Jim doesn’t support himself on YouTube clicks. For all the criticism (and it applies to a lot of the other “dead horse beating” people complain about) his videos are what his audience wants. He does not do ad revenue. He is not part of the traditional games media or the new school networks and channel affiliations. He gets his money straight from patron donations, making those who donate his employers. It’s not about hot takes, controversy, algorithms or any of the lazy criticisms but about what the donors want and they wanted his opinion on this game so he made a video even though he didn’t want to and clearly stated that.

But does that matter, Jim inspires hate and logic will never stop those who want to hate him.

The only reason to give Sterling money is to get him a subscription to Weight Watchers :rodney

The fact that a public airport can ban a restaurant because it donates to organizations the government doesn't like is some dystopian nightmare.

You're right though, it IS pretty funny that alt-right shithole spends its annual no-real-news-day promoting tolerance and leaving links to charitable causes, and self-proclaimed progressive ivory tower spends its annual no-real-news-day banning a chunk of its userbase to shill for a movie

I'm always a bit confused when people say that this sub is a toxic hellhole. Maybe I'm not reading enough of the comments? The content itself is all just news, trailers, reviews etc.

Even the comments to "Vampire the Masquerade goes political" are pretty civil

User Banned (3 days): Antagonistic behaviour
Quote from: Servbot24
So what solution are you proposing here? I don't think that refusing to believe an accuser in favor of a corporation until we have 100% proof is a good idea at all. We could automatically lock all new threads for a week in case new information is ever to come in, but that's obviously absurd. We could demand every user posts evidence of their individual journalistic investigation of each topic before posting, but again that's absurd.

Perhaps I just need to see examples of the specific quotes in question, because I don't feel bad at all for saying "shame on you Epic" and then saying "oh, nevermind, that report was wrong." It may be there were some over the topic toxic posts you are referring to that I just didn't see.
Are you fuckin kidding me? Did you really say it's not a good idea to hold off judgment until you have all facts? That's 100% the solution. Im really at a loss. Why does everyone want to jump to conclusions without facts. You dont feel bad for saying shame on a company when you didn't have all the facts and then looked like an ass for being wrong? Well then there's a problem with you and you'll just look like an idiot the rest of your life. So if that's what you want go ahead. But don't be shocked when people call you a moron from here on out

Really mods?
Thats who you're banning in that exchange, and that's the reasoning for it?

I've been using Era less and less these past few weeks just because of the overwhelming negativity that can be found here. It's depressing man. It's easy to say "Well just ignore those threads" but when most of the threads are full of some sort of controversy then you have to ask yourself "is it even worth browsing through anymore".

I love this place but it's becoming hard to stick around for as long as I used to. It feels like the place becomes less and less about actual "games" as the weeks go on.

A moment of clarity?

I guess we'll see, won't we? Wake me up when racists aren't being en-masse deservingly shamed on Twitter, and I'll rub my eyes to see your world. For every story where people got it wrong, there are two stories of bullshit rightfully being called out, so it's hard to imagine the world you want becoming a reality, and I hope it never does. It would say more about the individuals downplaying those incidents and the positive impact they have to want them to disappear.

  • I can't help myself and do my best to nail him to a wall.
  • This bulletpoint hasn't been written yet, but I suspect it's Merc trying to report me for some contrived rule I didn't break, and responding with faux-politeness and a "I just like discussing things haha" dismissal.

A very good thread

This is surprisingly a nihilistic view. Hard time believing he actually thinks this way, but maybe he does.

I get where you're coming from, I get when you look at it from a certain angle, how could anyone say "mob justice" is a good thing? I'll give you one reason: accountability. The way things have always been is racists or Republicans or whoever is shit, they get away with it, they have their little moments and they spew their bullshit and everyone moves on. Usually there is no recourse for that, because everyone has the right to say what they want, so what can happen to them? nothing, really. Enter Twitter. Now, people have the tools to finally be able to converge and fight back against that stuff. People need to watch what they say, because there are millions who are ready to call them out if they trip up. People are finally *accountable* to a degree they were not before. That, to me, and to the people who historically haven't had as much of a voice, is a good thing.

Oh cool, so 33% of people wrongfully harrassed by a social media mob is the acceptable amount of unfair harassment.

Cunt.

Being harrassed by hundreds if not thousands of people you don't know, over an extended period of time that far exceeds any actual legal punishment that would be meted out if you fuck up on Twitter = *accountability*

this boy isn't very bright is he? :doge

its less 'not very bright' as cheerleading actual harmful activities.
as era wordsaladbot would have it, "Downplaying the activities of a hate group, dismissing concerns over harassment"

he's not bright because his logic of "its ok for mob justice if you think the target 'is shit'" means basically anyone is open to this at any time, including himself since he is pretty shit.

"star wars was shit so good thing that asian broad was harassed off twitter or whatever" - red merc, probably

shutting down your whole sub devoted to something as supposedly fun and trivial as videogames and replacing it with a dreary scattershot "stop being such a terrible person" is a great april fool.
I unsubbed, I can only hope more do the same. I didnt know why they had it locked initially when I did, thought it was some lame april fools, but my reasoning still stands -  It's a discussion forum, stopping discussion even as a joke is fucking dumb.  I'll unsub from any sub that does things like this, like they are too big to fail.

r/gamernews seems more populated but /r/gamingnews/ has a sweet skin lmao, I subbed to r/ps4 and r/pcgaming and r/steam as well, I generally avoided the platform stuff before, but hey here we are.

EDIT: I looked at /r/gaming/ also, I kinda remember this to be a default sub, but the threads there  :notlikethis :gamer

"mobbed" aka no one contacts them at all, only laughed at from afar. much different than redmerc's own definition of shitting on "the bad people" on twitter or whatever.

what a moronic cunt to think that's some sort of gotcha
