All that Crossing Eden Star Wars thread tells me is that they don’t actually understand storytelling and themes.

Simply because the dual protagonist is a villain and is espousing the theme doesn’t mean that’s not the theme. That’s not how storytelling works. A villain can for sure represent an angle the story is going for. If anything they can serve as the counter point.

It is for sure about not letting the past control the future. Kylo Ren’s angle may be too extreme, but that’s the question the story poses.

At every angle the story says the past and legacy are weird things to be a slave to.

Rey’s past doesn’t matter.
Luke thought the worship of the Jedi of the past was wrong.
Characters like Finn need too move on from their past selves and embrace their new selves.

I'm asshurt that even if TLJ was a bad movie as a whole, the Rey/Kylo plotline was the most interesting Star Wars content I've seen since ROTJ and now we're heading back to JJ's bland pisswater. I probably won't even go see it in theaters because I have no attachment to any sort of overarching plot.

Really, the biggest failing of the new trilogy was not having a big bad villain in the vein of Vader. We needed to see the new characters bounce off a really evil motherfucker, and we never got that because they defanged Kylo Ren so early on. It made him a really fun character that almost works more as a tertiary lead in the story, but it robbed the rest of the narrative of so much that it actually might be an improvement to bring Sheev back.

I think one of the bigger factors might have actually been the launch of Sekiro. Apex seems like it drew a lot of players who weren't exclusively online FPS fans, but rather just fans of great/'prestige' games.
