The Brexit vote was insanely complicated in who voted to leave, it really is absurdly reductionist to say "just racists".
There were a bunch of protest votes against pig-fuckers austerity measures, because 'remain' appeared to be the preferred policy of the tories
There were a bunch of anti-federalist votes, who perceive the EU as a wasteful bureaucracy
There were a bunch of people who were lied to about what we spend, and what we receive in return
There were a bunch of nationalist votes -
not the same as 'racist' - who think trivial shit like whose face is on a coin or banknote, or that beer comes in pints and not litres is A Big Deal.
Like I said above, a lot of old school socialists / trade unionists being against it as it undermines collective bargaining of workers, because if you get a bunch of uppity strikers you can just replace them wholesale with immigrants from elsewhere.
I can understand - somewhat - americans and their binary partisanship thinking believing its a modal left / right issue, but anyone who lives here and has like... absolutely
any political consciousness can see it isn't.
e:
Yeah there was a lot of backlash about it. lazy pricks saying wut I have to get a job now?
I do always love the papers that find these rare cases when a family get a big house and a large amount of welfare and they're rightly crucified.
Also the fight the right mantra they have on ERA and on the extreme left is why Trump will likely win 2020 and they'll lose their collective minds.
yeah, I have to say shit like "Benefits Street" isn't exactly an accurate reflection of the general populace, when we have shit like fucking food bins preventing actual starvation
