Junior Phase

Once your account is activated, you can immediately begin posting replies. In order to discourage elitism, no publicly visible distinction is made between new members and longtime veterans. However, accounts that have less than 300 posts and/or joined less than 90 days ago may be subject to stricter moderation, as we have to be on the lookout for troll accounts and bad faith posters. This 'junior phase' is your chance to settle in, get a feel for the forum, and demonstrate your capacity for civil discourse. Please do not try to push any limits until you are sure where the lines are. Do not try to inflate your post count with spam or low quality posts.
Quote
Moderation Approach

We aim to articulate our policies and expectations as clearly as possible, in this document and in all our official communications. Whenever a user is warned or banned for a post, the reason is provided in a public banner attached to that post. In addition to ensuring transparency and accountability, these banners are helpful for other members to understand where the lines are and what our rationale is. Every staff member is expected to follow the same rules as the rest of the forum.

Due to our heavy workload, a large moderation team is required to ensure timely coverage around the clock. The size of the team can make it very challenging to ensure consistent moderation. To address this, we have Mod Captains and internal moderation guidelines based on precedent and publicly available policy. Some flexibility is required to account for new or unexpected circumstances.

Our team moderates to the spirit of the rules and our mission statement. Multiple factors are taken into account before coming to a decision. We weigh past infractions, post history, and the severity of the post(s) when determining penalties. We also consider whether a member doubled down on their behavior.

Staff members are required to avoid any involvement in moderating disputes that they have personally taken part in. This means that a moderator will never moderate a user for an argument between the two. Instead, any relevant reports are handled independently by other moderators on the team. We do our utmost to ensure that moderation is impartial, objective, and not driven by emotion. On the other hand, when it comes to community threads that might each have a unique culture, we always seek to consult staff members who are familiar with that community in order to avoid potential misunderstandings.

Please bear in mind that due to the highly active and fast paced nature of discussion on ResetEra, it is impossible for our staff to be everywhere. Even if you notice staff presence within a thread, there is no guarantee that they have read every single post before or after their own. Do not assume that moderators are ignoring rule violations. If you see an issue, report it.
Quote
The Importance of Being Respectful

Please be respectful when posting in threads. This includes when you post about the topic at hand and especially when you address other members. Do not make unfounded and inflammatory accusations to discredit and/or antagonize your fellow members (such calling them a shill, astroturfer, etc). Do not shame users based on their post count, avatar choice, or what community they belong to. Avoid hurling insults or making disagreements personal. If someone else is causing trouble, report them rather than trying to reciprocate.

Do not send hostile or confrontational private messages to other members, especially if such contact is unsolicited. This kind of behavior, if reported, will result in a ban. If a member you have privately contacted indicates that they do not wish to continue the conversation, disengage. If you receive an unwanted and hostile message, report it so that moderators can investigate.

Respect a Diverse Audience

What might seem harmless or funny to you can be hurtful to others. Exclusionary behavior, casual or otherwise, is not tolerated. Be mindful at all times that your posts are not only being read by men; you should be considerate of women members and how your words might make them feel. We specifically discourage inappropriate or vulgar objectification of women. You should also remember that we have members from all over the world. Be considerate of all nationalities, cultures, and ethnic groups and avoid making jokes at their expense. Do not mock accents, ethnic names, or languages.
Quote
No Trolling

Trolling, or posting with the intention of provoking a negative response from other members, is prohibited. This is especially true in serious and sensitive topics. Trolling is often disingenuous, but posting your honest opinion can still be trolling if you do so with the intent to inflame. Sincerity is not a perfect shield from consequences.

Please also keep in mind that the onus is always on you to make sure that your meaning and intentions are clear when you post. If you make a statement that appears to be inflammatory, moderators will judge it based on the text you have made available. Staff and other members cannot read minds. If you feel that your post or intentions have been misunderstood, you should quickly move to clarify what you really meant.
Quote
Remember to Take Breaks

From time to time it may be prudent to step away from the keyboard for a few minutes or hours. If a discussion is getting heated to the point where you feel you are at risk of losing your composure or breaking the rules, you should disengage immediately. Always make sure that you are taking care of your health.
Quote
Hate Speech and Groups

We do not allow behavior or rhetoric that attacks or discriminates against users based on race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or disability. We also do not tolerate 'slut shaming' including the demeaning of sex workers. This policy extends to support of hate movements, online or offline, that are dedicated to the promotion of the above. We ask that you not use slang or terminology coined by or associated with hate movements.
Quote
Inflammatory Generalizations

Context and intent will matter here, but take care to avoid making inflammatory generalizations that are likely to cause offense. This includes generalizations regarding gender, race, sexuality, nationality, and ethnicity. It can also apply to inflammatory accusations made against large groups or communities of people. Always try to make nuanced points rather than broad and sweeping statements.

Inflammatory Defense/Support

Defending heinous behaviors (especially those related to bigotry) or supporting individual public figures who are guilty of the same can constitute inflammatory posting, even if the tone of your post is otherwise mild. Note that members found trying to abuse this policy to bait others into bans will instead be moderated themselves. This policy is intended to guard against provocation, not encourage interrogation.

Inflammatory Comparisons

Inflammatory points of comparison and false equivalences can needlessly escalate or derail an argument. You should not, for example, equate bigotry with intolerance of bigotry. It is usually best to avoid extreme comparisons in general, such as those involving loss of human life or serious issues like human rights. If you must make such a comparison, please make sure that you're doing so for a very good reason.

Body Shaming

Health and economic concerns regarding obesity are legitimate topics of discussion. Not all comments at the expense of obesity will be moderated. However, members should not go out of their way to be cruel or dehumanize a person solely because of their physical appearance. If it is determined that such behavior had no other motivation or basis besides looks, a ban will be issued. Inflammatory generalizations on this subject are not welcome.
Quote
Child Welfare

Do not attempt to rationalize violence against children, disciplinary or otherwise. Advocating for or defending any kind of child abuse is not tolerated. Your own upbringing is not relevant to this policy. Attempting to dismiss or condone the sexualization of minors, fictional or otherwise, will lead to a lengthy ban. We do not tolerate any pedantry (such as nitpicking over definitions) on this topic.
Quote
Advocating Violence

We do not allow advocacy of violence, explicit or otherwise. This policy can encompass posts with a wide range of severity, depending on the context and contents of the post. The penalty for breaking this rule can therefore vary greatly, all the way up to a permanent ban. Advocating murder will always result in a permanent ban.

Obituary Threads

While context will be taken into account, we do not welcome celebration or cheering for the death of public figures. Members that appear to be using an obituary thread as an opportunity to post vitriol will be moderated. There will be no shortage of opportunities to discuss the legacy of a public figure in other, later, threads. We simply do not want to celebrate death.
Quote
Offering Advice to Members

You will be held responsible for what you post, especially when you are offering advice for another member to follow. Advice that is illegal or harmful will result in a ban. Consider all the possible consequences if your advice were to actually be put into action. Do not misrepresent your qualifications. The more serious the subject, the more strictly this will be enforced.
Quote
Israel and Palestine

Threads about the Israel/Palestine conflict are some of the most contentious and difficult to moderate. While we have tried being more hands off in the past, these threads have tended to escalate out of control when they are not tightly moderated. As a result, we now enforce four primary rules to keep these threads as civil as possible.
Do not conflate civilians with their leadership: This means you should not conflate all Palestinians with Hamas or attempt to paint all Palestinians as terrorists. You should also not hold all Israelis responsible for the actions of their government.
Do not condone violence or killing: This goes for both Hamas and the IDF, especially with regard to civilians.
Do not deny the right of either Israel or Palestine to exist as independent states.
Due to historical considerations, the term "Nazi" is not appropriate or acceptable when used in reference to Israel, Israelis, and Jews. This includes comparisons between the Israeli government/IDF and Nazi Germany. You are welcome to criticize Israel in all other ways, but that specific analogy is off-limits, period.

In all seriousness, there is a debate on how legislation and implementation of nutrition guidelines does help contribute to the raising levels of obesity that we're currently seeing in the U.S.

Also, school lunches are terrible, and I legit see kids every day bypass or throw away school lunches to eat a bag of takis that were smuggled in because L.A. County said the school couldn't sell junk food (Chips, soda, snacks, etc) to fundraise.

I mean, I don’t this is a bad idea (not selling junk food).
In schools? Sure. In general? Lol.

I doubt not selling junk food in schools will make that much of a difference though.

Sure, but like I said earlier, we now have kids smuggling onto campus in duffle bags and selling it like it's contraband. I only care because we have kids actively leaving class during session to seek the students selling chips like they're arranging a drug buy.

Mission Statement

Since its founding in late 2017, ResetEra has been an inviting bonfire at the crossroads of the gaming industry. Our goal is to provide a modern platform where enthusiasts and industry professionals alike will want to talk about all kinds of video games -- and everything else under the sun. Safeguarded by technology, a vigilant staff, and some of the toughest registration screening of any public forum, ResetEra has been able to cultivate a highly active and passionate community while keeping most trolls and bad actors off of the site.

Today ResetEra is the most popular independent gaming forum on the internet as measured by traffic. It is also an inclusive space that proudly welcomes members of every gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Respect and decency towards each other, regardless of background, is nonnegotiable. Posters are expected to enter discussions in good faith.

In order to maintain the community that we all cherish, moderators are tasked with upholding this mission statement. The following document aims to provide guidance that can help members be successful posters over the long term. Please note that attempting to use the following text as a shield while violating its spirit (or the mission statement) will not protect you. We include as much detail here as possible, but it is impossible to cover every subject that might require moderation or every exception that might be made.

The Team

Our international staff is made up of dedicated individuals spread across five continents, with wildly diverse backgrounds and interests. Women, people of color, LGBTQ, and religious minorities are all well represented on our team. That team consists entirely of volunteers drawn from the community they seek to serve. A comprehensive Active Staff Roster is available to the public and updated regularly.

The team processes hundreds of reports daily, and every one of those reports is handled by multiple moderators. We also receive dozens of emails and private messages, and manually approve dozens of new registrations each day. This work is endless, stressful, and often thankless. Many staff members put in countless hours each week towards maintaining the forum; this is a responsibility they take on because they care deeply about the community and want it to be the best that it can be.

Show female empowerment by having a woman (with the skills of a pilot) almost cause an accident the moment she operates a motor vehicle.

K...?

Would be interesting if the guy hadn't relented and the altruistic do-gooder hero of our movie decided not to let him keep his hand

for the sin of approaching a woman with some confidence and meeting her on her own terms with a handshake as requested(?)

Backseat Moderation

Backseat moderation is when members take it upon themselves to act as if they are in charge of moderation, such as by trying to enforce rules themselves, or by publicly insisting on what kind of moderation needs to happen. Please do not do this. This behavior often leads to thread derailment and user arguments; it is also discourteous to the staff.

The report system is always available if you want to bring your concerns to the attention of the team. If you have questions about moderation, feel free to use the contact form or reach out to the Mod Captains directly. What you should never do is tag individual staff members in a thread while asking them to carry out some form of moderation, particularly punitive action against other members. This is obnoxious and unnecessary and will result in penalties for you.

Modwhining

There may be times when you disagree with a moderator action or lack thereof. Your feedback and criticism is welcome and encouraged, so long as it is constructive, politely presented, and offered through appropriate channels like the contact form or private messages. If you post complaints about moderation in a public thread, you will be responsible for any ensuing derailment. If your words cross the line into hostility or outright attacks on staff, you will be banned for modwhining.

Please be aware that our volunteer staff are never required to passively receive abuse or invective. This applies to both public and private forms of communication, including private messages and reports.

I must admit that I'm still shaking a little bit after reading Biestmann's plantphobic comments. His whole spiel is very humancentric and not at all considerate of diversity within the entire biosphere. Piranha Plant provides further plant representation to the roster and promotes a very progressive view of plants rights. His narrow viewpoint demanding a human female or human of color ignores not just plants but all other non-human animals and creatures. That kind of toxic humanism should be treated as the hate speech it is against us non-human readers of ResetERA.com.

But the main thing is that I hope sabrina is okay.

I voted for RE4. OP can you explain some of your reasoning behind why you think Demon Souls was influential? I don't see the impact on Shovel Knight for example. Or Watch Dogs and Journey?
In Shovel Knight, you lost your loot when you died and had to get it back similar to the Souls mechanic if it worked exactly how it does in Dark Souls.
Further evidence that soulsborne games rot brain matter.

This forum is wildly messed up if it talks about Demon’s Souls influence and nobody has mentioned its influence on social aspects. It was revolutionary. It’s very clearly the influence behind Nintendo’s entire take on social media (Miiverse being very clearly related to its message system and the games that have followed even after Miiverse’s death, most recently Mario Maker 2) and many other games copying that.
Quote
All of the previous Miiverse integration in their games felt like a light hearted take on Demon’s Souls message system.

Demon's Souls' influence is far-reaching, and not to be underestimated. It invented messaging. And on the most popular independent gaming forum as measured by traffic resetera.com, you can message people. And I don't think I need to go over resetera.com's credentials, now do I? Without Demon's Souls, who knows if language would even be a thing by now.

Quote
So y’all actually want to limit the portions people are allowed to eat?
mmm, lets get started

Quote
When you give the addict a million choices that offer their addiction but have about 1% of choices that don't, they're probably going to continue eating the stuff that's shit for themselves. It's why if you're an alcoholic you probably shouldn't walk into a liquor store.
Quote
Quote
So y’all actually want to limit the portions people are allowed to eat?
We do it with other things...a bar can legally cut off people from drinking more. There are alcohol and cigarette age limits and there are there are things that cigarette companies must do like putting warning labels on their packaging. Soda's should have just as agressive warning labels as cigarettes or alcohol.
Quote
Quote
So y’all actually want to limit the portions people are allowed to eat?
It's a public health crisis. It's like cigarette and seatbelts laws. Those are in place because deaths, accidents, and health issues that arise from those place a toll on public institutes and funds. Ultimately tax payers are fronting the bill for industries that are killing people. It's not control on an individual level but taxing businesses that sell addictive substances and carry on billion dollar ad campaigns to promote misinformation should be regulated. I mean they're not going to be because it's America and those businesses make the laws and fund the science, but they should be.

Quote
So is that a Yes?

Quote
yes, we should be trying to limit portion sizes that can be bought and sold. maybe at a gas station, make 64oz cup sizes illegal. small things like this that have big impacts on what people will consume.
Quote
Yes and no. People are allowed to purchase whatever they may like, and the government should be allowed to tax industry for pollution and public health damages. Maybe that means some items are no longer offered on store shelves because companies are bankrupt, but I'm also not sure if I would consider that regulating food portions. Inversely we're so concerned about the American government limiting portions that we're obfuscating our view of how corporate America is controlling our portion intake.
Quote
Quote
So prohibition 2.0, in other words.
So only allow healthier choices to be available. I didn't say it was going to be fun. i said it's something that needs to be done.

Quote
Quote
I don't really mind if people want to be fat.
We can't afford healthcare costs as it is, imagine what it's going to be like when the majority of american's have diabetes. We're quickly getting to that point and it's only going to keep getting worse unless we address it with legislation.
Quote
To be fair, I don't want to have my health insurance premiums going up (in the US) because people are eating junk (mostly the fault of companies/businesses that put junk in their food). Yes, people talk about Medicare for All here in the states, but that does absolutely nothing to prevent people from eating junk and later being hospitalized with cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, etc.
:awesome

Quote
Quote
So you both want to try Prohibition again.

What’s the next step after that? Mandatory exercise?
How is this prohibition if you're still a) allowed to purchase the food albeit it at a potentially greater cost and b) if the food is no longer produced what-so-ever due to companies saying it's not worth producing? It's not a prohibition as no one is making the food illegal to sell or consume. Maybe we'll go back to 2013 and have another Twinkie shortage.

Quote
Tax per calorie with exemptions for produce?

Quote
I think being frustrated by the situation and how little is being done about it may evoke these responses, especially how the majority of the posters are against any regulation or public works efforts and have a somewhat GOP bootstraps ideology to food consumption.

Quote
Quote
That seems to be pretty damn totalitarian to me. I'm really not sure how else to read that other than some fascist BS about government knowing best and people falling in line.
Saying, let's reduce options of sugar intake. Isn't the same as banning everything. Allow Oreos but only in packages of 300 calories or less. Make people pay extra to have more. Get rid of king size candy packages and XXXXL m&m bags that cost less per ounce than the single sized portion bag. Regulate how big a cup size can be at a fast food joint. Fact of the matter is, we over consume because we are allowed to overconsume and it's advertised to us as the correct choice to make by the companies that sell them. "You sure you don't want to the large size? All cups cost the same amount, there's no reason not to get the large." People talk about Japan but fail to realize that they don't have these big sizes like we do. A large in Japan is the small of America... They're literally doing what I'm suggesting.

Quote
You can moan about whole grain ingredients or you can focus on solutions that would actually address the main problem. American stomachs require too much food to feel full.

Just put a ban on restaurants (fast food included) from selling more than a thousand calories per person. If they need to buy take-out for multiple people, then make the customer sign a slip with the number of adults or children eating and it'll give you the limit. Yes, some people will lie every time but most people will feel some shame about it. Do the same thing when buying groceries for the household.

Also redo the general diet recommendations to focus on two meals a day rather than three. It's easier to skip breakfast than to eat small portions a bunch of times a day.

If you want to overhaul American diets, you can only afford to institute a couple rules. Trying to phase out various nutritional categories (ie: everything that is empty calories/high sodium) is just a stupidly large challenge from a regulatory standpoint. A quota system on total calories consumed makes more sense. Of course most people don't like restricting the amount of food eaten because it actually requires a lifestyle change.

Yes, people talk about Medicare for All here in the states, but that does absolutely nothing to prevent people from eating junk and later being hospitalized with cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, etc.

Step 1: Why should I pay for others that make bad choices?
Step 2: Why should the state have any say in what I should pay for my health insurance?
Step 3: Why have a state after all?

I’m 27 and single guy and a successful job.
30 years of raising kids with tons of responsibilities or 30 years of gaming with zero responsibilities ?
The choice is easy.

I find looking for a girl to date just to get married is too much work and stress. Fuck all. I just hope my siblings have kids so my parents can have grandchildren.

Step was sounds an awfully lot like victim shaming/blaming.  "Why should I pay for those unwilling to work who choose to use drugs?"

That's Centrist talk!

Brexit does, in fact, represent a binary issue; are you for or against the multicultural exchange of people, goods, and culture or not?

Because that's what the Leavers were so mad about (because they're racist) and what Remainers should be in favor of.

So apparently he targeted a group of school girls in that BBC article. I wonder if this was motivated by an inability to form a deep connection with others. I remember an incident a few years ago where a man stabbed an idol because she rejected him, I also remember the guy who went on a stabbing spree in Akihabara also complained about being single.

The EU was literally formed as an economic union to reduce trade barriers and increase the profits for the bourgeoisie, under a 'unity from above' model, so it should be of zero fucking surprise to anyone who understands the positions involved that an old school socialist would be against it in principle.

Meanwhile, while all the blair-babes hungry for political power want to blame Corbyn for somehow making brexit happen, he chaired 4 seperate fucking motions for a second referendum that were all overturned in the commons, despite obviously not believing in the principles of a european monetary federation himself.

I personally think leaving is a mistake for all of the same reasons I thought a scottish bid for independence is a mistake, because although british national character is such that we think of Ireland as a tiny little island off the coast of the mainland, the truth is that we're a tiny little island off the coast of the mainland.

But even if I was ardently against being in the EU, it makes no fucking sense whatsoever not to revoke our invocation of Article 50 and stay a member until we have an actual fucking exit package sorted out.
Its like going through a divorce with an active pre-nup against you and just going "NO, FUCK IT, TAKE IT ALL, I DON'T CARE, I JUST WANT TO LEAVE!". You're a goddamn idiot.

ERA seem to think Brexit is really alt right, it's not it's just the poors being too lazy, stupid and slightly racist for the jobs these foreigners allegedly are stealing from them.

The fact is these stupid and lazy people, would never do the low paying shitty jobs a lot of them come over and do.

They also don't see immigrants properly. mainly use the "brown" argument.

The way Welfare works in the UK is quite incredible that you can actually earn enough to live without working with a lot of failures to force these fat poor fucks into any form of work.

Whilst targeting disabled people and forcing them to work ???

but yeah mate once ruled the seas and owned everything.

Yeah there was a lot of backlash about it. lazy pricks saying wut I have to get a job now?

I do always love the papers that find these rare cases when a family get a big house and a large amount of welfare and they're rightly crucified.

Also the fight the right mantra they have on ERA and on the extreme left is why Trump will likely win 2020 and they'll lose their collective minds.

The Brexit vote was insanely complicated in who voted to leave, it really is absurdly reductionist to say "just racists".
There were a bunch of protest votes against pig-fuckers austerity measures, because 'remain' appeared to be the preferred policy of the tories
There were a bunch of anti-federalist votes, who perceive the EU as a wasteful bureaucracy
There were a bunch of people who were lied to about what we spend, and what we receive in return
There were a bunch of nationalist votes - not the same as 'racist' - who think trivial shit like whose face is on a coin or banknote, or that beer comes in pints and not litres is A Big Deal.
Like I said above, a lot of old school socialists / trade unionists being against it as it undermines collective bargaining of workers, because if you get a bunch of uppity strikers you can just replace them wholesale with immigrants from elsewhere.

I can understand - somewhat - americans and their binary partisanship thinking believing its a modal left / right issue, but anyone who lives here and has like... absolutely any political consciousness can see it isn't.

I've been looking forward to a new Lindsay video but this slight against John Hurt a couple of minutes in has me shook. I'll have to watch the rest another time.
I'd put him in the same class in popular media as Alan Rickman -- obviously they're damn talented actors (especially on stage) but their roles in film are more character work and voice over stuff. One was in Galaxy Quest, Harry Potter, and the H2G2 film; the other was a "forgotten" Doctor Who incarnation and all those nightmare-inducing animated films like Watership Down, Plague Dogs, The Black Cauldron. And again, both damn talented.

:confused

Alan Rickman: Truly Madly Deeply, Robin Hood, Dogma, Love Actually, and f'ing DIE HARD
John Hurt: 1984, the Elephant Man, Spaceballs, V for Vendetta, Hellboy, and f'ing ALIEN
