Peter Thiel. These private equity vampires fired the killshot, but Deadspin has been teetering on the edge for half a decade because of Peter Thiel.

All the big brains who aren't really upset because 10 years ago Deadspin posted a column that used the word "fruity" as a derogative are why facism is going slip into power right under our noses. A single person with unlimited funds destroyed a media company because he was upset by his coverage from that company. That is the nightmare scenario where the first amendment exists, but actually isn't worth anything. These guys start by suing things into oblivion, then they run for office and just cut out the middle man. RIP to one of the best sites on the internet.
But Peter Thiel didn't do that?

This hilarious thing is that Thiel spent a mere $10 million, total, on multiple lawsuits Gawker was facing. Which is like couch change in major corporate lawsuits, especially for a billionaire. It's pretty amazing that was all that was apparently needed to get all the way through trial. The only one that brought him anything was the Hogan suit. And he didn't even get the jury award of $140 million.

Univision Communications bought Gawker Media's assets for $135 million at a bankruptcy auction on August 16, 2016.[39] The sale to Univision included six Gawker websites—Deadspin, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku and Lifehacker—which were not involved with the publication of the Bollea materials.

...

On November 2, 2016, Gawker Media and Bollea reached a $31 million settlement.
Gawker had way more than $10 million at hand, even AFTER they got BTFO, yet these idiots think Thiel somehow spent unlimited money to crush a tiny little company.

This is why $10 million in legal fees could somehow blow the fuck out of the company, it was endlessly in debt without any assets:
Quote
In 2015, Gawker Media LLC released its audited revenue for the past five years.[15] In 2010, its revenue was $20 million and operating income of $2.6 million.[15] Gawker Media's revenues steadily increased through 2014 and its audited revenue for 2014 was $45 million with $6.5 million operating income.[15] Business Insider valued the company at $250 million based upon its 2014 revenue.[16] In early 2015, Denton stated that he planned to raise $15 million in debt from various banks so as not to dilute his equity stake in the company by accepting investments from venture capital firms.[16]

In June 2016, Gawker Media revealed its corporate finances in a motion for a stay of judgment pending appeal and accompanying affidavits filed in the Bollea v. Gawker case in Florida state court. In the filings, the company stated that it could not afford to pay the $140.1 million judgment or the $50 million appeal bond.[17] The company's balance sheet at the time reflected total assets of $33.8 million ($5.3 million cash, $11.9 million accounts receivable, $12.5 million fixed assets), total current liabilities of $27.7 million; and total long-term liabilities of $22.8 million.[17] A bond broker stated in an affidavit that the company's book value was $10 million.[17]

Thankfully Gawker Media was an LLC which mean no single person could own it and run it purely for personal profit.

Not a huge surprise, but a ton of people clearly don't understand how economy works. Deadspin and Kotaku are business. Their job isn't to uncover the truth, preach or stick it to the man. They have to make money in order to keep the lights on and the staff paid. If the staff doesn't make money (...)
Do we know that they don't? The writers can see the metrics. And are presumably paid bonues based on clicks. It's in their own self-interest to write stories people want to read. Or click on, at the very least... They've been around for a while, so I assume they know what works for them and their audience.

This seems more an issue of the suits wanting to squeeze more out of them with intrusive ads (and perhaps a change in editorial direction). Which they're entitled to, but for right now it seems to have backfired, considering the Deadspin walkout.

No, I don't think we know. What we do know is that their owners weren't happy with what they were doing, and that's ultimately what matters. And while the staff claims their CEO is just an asshole who simply doesn't want to see the "truth", that seems extremely reductive and hard to believe. I mean, he might be an asshole, sure, but if those publications made boatloads of cash, I'm pretty fucking sure he wouldn't give a single fuck what those clowns write. Their owners are "evil rich old men", remember - just like the executives at Disney. And those assholes don't give a fuck either.

Why are you only accounting for $10 million instead of the $140+ million judgment  (or $50 million or whatever that appeal bond means) against them?
Thiel didn't know he'd get anything out of funding the lawsuits. He just paid for the legal expenses of multiple people, including Hogan, suing Gawker. It wasn't even a loan. He didn't get any of that judgment or settlement. That's why he celebrated when it was announced they lost but before the amount was known, Gawker couldn't afford losing period.

I guess I'm just confused what you are debating in that (admittedly dumb for other reasons) post.

The person said Thiel had unlimited money, not that he spent unlimited money.
The person is fearmongering about fascism in a case that has nothing to do with it and is trying to smear a gay man for something Gawker brought upon itself that he barely had anything to do with. That's my problem with the post.

There’s also census data on this

so, looking for some research help here.

there are plenty of articles on brave current parents despite taboo saying they regret having children.

I’d like some hard numbers of any kind really, but especially if anyone can find anything on older/retired/people who have had kids that are now adults who definitively regret it.

I am early 30s and my wife is 35. We are pretty much at Dinks for life stage.

there are many benefits and nearly in a daily basis they surprise me. I notice my parent colleagues even in higher income brackets drive shitty cars (possibly, I’m in sales so it is at times hard to say, I tried to move into a different position at work that I would have considered a promotion but it was like a 30k salary drop lol).

Just this week I came back from a 2 week Europe trip and virtually every parent, even if they are in their late 50s/60s have never been to Europe, and then lots of things that I would consider a pretty trivial expense are considered expensive, etc.

I constantly hear it’s absolutely worth it to have kids but is that just an empty justification?

Same friend coworker has expressed jealously and has said the first one was an accident. My sisters kid was an accident as well. I sometimes wonder how many kids are accidents and then people just go along with it.

Is there really something so satisfying to raising children? Like what percent is truly no regrets? Because by the same argument people seem pretty happy not having them.

I'm wondering what to do in this situation - I'm not at all familiar with the privacy/legal points around this.

I'm signing up for a private life insurance policy. I had previously had insurance through my employer.

My financial advisor is setting it up for me and I got an email with the following statement:

"The insurance carrier has requested the following information about your family. If any family members has a medical condition such as heart or kidney disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, melanoma suicide, Huntington’s Disease
Sickle Cell Disease or Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. They are asking for the age the condition was diagnosed. They also want current ages if living or dates of death."

Then there's a chart with the following columns:
Medical Conditions | Age at Onset/Event | Age if Living | Cause of Death | Age of Death

They are asking about immediately family - Mother, Father, Brother, Sister.

I'm unsure what to say here - do I legally need to be completely honest? I'm worried that they won't cover me.
My father was diagnosed with Parkinsons 2 years ago at the age of 62.
My mother has had some minor heart conditions for the past 10 years or so-but I attribute that to her high stress/anxiety levels.
Worried about being honest with his life insurance company, tells ResetERA.com a forum full of doxxers.

I think it’s invasive and predatory and only exists to save or make the insurance company money - and is a stark reminder of why a parasitic middle man is an outrageous tax on the population that didn’t need to exist. It’s free money to an artificial and hypothetically unnecessary industry.

Instead, 32-year-old Tommy Lee Jenkins had been talking to a Winnebago County Sheriff's deputy working with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a statement from the US Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Wisconsin said.

He is charged with using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, the office said, and faces 10 years to life in prison if convicted.
So he never actually attempted to persuade, induce or entice a minor? Case dismissed.

Quote
The law enforcement officer was posing as a girl named "Kylee" who lived in Neenah, Wisconsin, with her mother, the attorney's office said.

Jenkins accepted a friend request from Kylee's profile and soon began engaging in sexual conversations with her, asking her if she's had sex and requesting explicit pictures, a criminal complaint alleges.

In early October, Jenkins began asking the girl if she wanted him to come to Wisconsin. When she said yes, he later told her he had begun walking from Whitestown, Indiana, to where she was.

"I will tell you when i get to neenah 108 hours by walking," he said, according to the complaint.

Throughout his journey, Jenkins sent pictures of areas he passed, including photos of exit signs and selfies, the complaint said.

On October 10, he said he had made it to the state and that someone had bought him a bus ticket to get to the girl's town.

Authorities arrested Jenkins when he arrived, the attorney's office said.

The alt-right was partly made up by gutter oil masturbator Cernovich because the 'right' was considered 60 y/o conservatives out of touch with young people.
What was first coined as 'new right' was changed to 'alt-right' a more hip and inclusive group of people including members of the LGTBQ+ community and the famous 'the blacks'.
They needed an identity that set them apart from the regular Republican/conservative parties and candidates they were also against.

Of course that didn't last long because the alt-right soon became a rallying cry for actual fascists and racists who joined with the alt-right ranks.
So they dropped their 'alt-right' label and instead considered themselves "Independents" also denouncing Trump for joining up with the GOP and implementing their policies.
They sorta underestimated their connection to their audience, who mainly followed them because they supported Trump.
Next to that they vastly underestimated their clout within Trump World itself. Not getting any White House jobs or even interviews.
Only those alt-right or not who were already in the Trump grift verse anyway (like Gorka, Bannon, Miller) got cozy positions.

The rest lost everything or rebranded themselves as self-help guru's.

and they still don't acknowledge that jenner has no problem with people using bruce and male pronouns when talking about the past.

And they also missed the entire joke about kanye acting like an old white lady, which makes the joke actually pretty racist.

Wouldn't that be up to each individual person, not incelsiorlef?

if you want to see what a normal, cool person che is you should look at his instagram stories some time
he’s so weird and insecure
I’m unsure what this has to do with his transphobic remarks though? As an initial response to the story at least.

Trans people are normal cool people too, that can also be weird and insecure at times. I’d hope we’d get the same buff in charisma for having those attributes in negotiations?

e: Like, I trust you know this so it just seems like such an odd response to someone espousing some disgusting shit to say “oh but look at his insta, such a cool guy”.
The first line is sarcasm you stupid fuck. Here's how I know: the second line.

Eh; I get it.
Everyone gets it. The point is that the desire to erase ones "dead name" does not and should not ever grant authority to censor information to an outside party. It should never be forbidden to keep up with name changes like Chelsea Von Valkenberg to the vastly inferior Zoe Tiberius Quinn. Or to use historical context like the Jenner example when listing 1976 Olympic medalists. It is however easy enough to update or write pieces to mention that it was Brianna Wu who was escorted from her college newspaper for having a racist meltdown threatening violence within a few years from her time when she interned for Republican Senator Trent Lott and met Waco perpetrator Janet Reno just as is done with any woman who changes her name upon marriage.

Easy enough, despite what incelsiorlef wishes to present it as.

Arguments can be made about how Michael Scott is supposed to highlight how unlikable and unfunny these kinds of people are... but at a certain point making these jokes is still making these jokes and the punchline only seems to be punching down

Kevin has almost no redeemable scenes to him

The joke is that he is fat and has learning disabilities and somehow makes it as an accountant

Its just not a show for me anymore
:jeanluc

also why is this in a SNL thread?
I miss the Wiig/ Hader years

Haven't watched much since they left

That being said comedy in general has always been very unfriendly to LGBT... especially transfolk

Rewatched Office and the amount of anti lgbt and racism stuff was stomach turning... ugh

Ive grown more and more disgusted by comedy in general and this is just another reason why Im checking out

Not gonna leave without saying fuck Che tho

Because fuck them
oh, okay

If he had a picture ready and everything, then that would presumably mean that some of the production staff were aware that this trash ass joke was coming up.
yes, SNL does multiple rehearsals, including right before the live show itself

they even sometimes edit the rehearsal versions in over the live ones

If people will defend comedians punching down with trans jokes then it’s no surprise that others will start to nudge that line. Shit doesn’t have to hit vile before it’s bad and causing harm.

Not surprising, he is one of the reasons that Shane Gillis was hired, he knows him from that horrific group that's name is slipping my mind, their whole shtick is doing comedy like this and Che is a part of it, they're the people that brought back Louis CK. It's some weird alt-right/lite place that is like edgy 4channers doing standup.

I’ve been watching SNL pretty regularly since 2009. That joke was actually the first time I’ve seen the crowd react like that. They were shocked and in silence. It was so weird to hear them tell that joke. Regardless of your stance on that type of joke, it was an odd choice for SNL.

Edit:

Lmao they took out the audience reaction. Watch at 0:40... Notice how quick it jumps to Colin Jost after Che makes the joke.

This I can get behind. Norm was GOAT.
If you can accept bigots as "GOATs".... then... sure, i guess?

No such thing as #cancelculture on era, and nobody can give an example.
No such things as mislabeling people alt right or bigots on era, and nobody can give an example.

It actually makes more sense now that I've seen it. It's not random "trans woman" like the thread is speculating, the "getting people to like Trump" part plays a role in the reference to Jenner.

SNL cuts out parts from their uploads all the time, especially joke bombs, because it wrecks the pacing. Weekend Update just is and always will be the most likely place for blatant joke bombs in the show that the cast can actually address.

The fuck? This dude is laughing at his own unfunny “jokes.” And the audience laughter is so awkward — like they’re flipping on/off a ‘LAUGH NOW’ sign with a switch or it’s straight up fake. And SNL hasn’t been funny for a long time so I guess they’re going for shock value to get viewers now.

Fuck everyone involved in this trash.
Quote
That was in poor taste, but what gets me most is that these jokes aren't written in a vacuum. I've seen and read about (from Tina Fey's book and videos) the behind the scenes machinations of SNL. They probably sat at a table with various other writers and performers developing this joke. Maybe someone raised objections, maybe they didn't, but that should have never made it on the air unless Che and Jost were purposefully looking to dredge up controversy.
Quote
Che actually comes off as racist there. And infinitely childish.

I rarely call for people's jobs and whatnot, but the more I read up on Che, the more I think it would be in SNL's best interest to go ahead and sever those ties.
He's only been on the show for seven years and been co-head writer of the entire show for two. Might as well take issue with Lorne Michaels.

They uploaded it and then took it out. I watched it on Sunday. And it may happen but I honestly can’t remember another time where that happened.
