Fuck it. I'm switching to Android
« on: July 11, 2019, 06:26:25 PM »
Been using iPhone for damn near 7 years and been a perfectly happy, loyal customer.

I love the product but I think I’m done.

I no longer can control my phone. WiFi automatically connects all the time. It used to be, all you had to do to disable WiFi and Bluetooth was swipe up and click the WiFi or bt button. Quick, easy. But after ios11 the iPhone has gotten creepy. It automatically knows when I’m in my car automatically starts Bluetooth. Simply clicking the WiFi button does not disable WiFi anymore. Otherwise you’re going to connect to random networks you don’t want to automatically. Like you’ll be driving and suddenly you’re connected to a WiFi network when you told the thing turn off. The only way to disable it is to go deep into phone settings and disable WiFi entirely, which are far more steps than previously just clicking an icon.

Essentially I have lost control of my own phone.

I’ve looked at android phones but that would mean signing up with google, who I do not trust with my data. Apple, for all of their problems, has sided with their customers’ privacy over companies like Facebook.

Also android STILL has a firmware issue where you can be out of date and an update isn’t available for your phone/carrier. Iirc they foolishly tied using apps with having certain firmwares. So unless you had Chocolate Fudge Cake you couldn’t download an app. I hated that about Android.

Are there phone alternatives to android? I know windows phone doesn’t exist anymore so fuck.

It really sucks because I loved iPhone and then Apple decided to take control away from their users.

You can use an Android phone without Google account, btw.
Just use f-droid and apkpure (or any other trustworthy source) to download apps.

In general, unlocked phones are the way to go to significantly speed updates up. (Going with the OS's actual developer for updates is the other half of the equation...)

Lmao

No.

iOS has the opposite problem.

One time I didn’t upgrade my firmware for years for fear of not being able to use a game app when I upgraded. Years. I could download anything and everything while using literally years old firmware. It wasn’t until around 10 when I needed to upgrade. I haven’t updated my phone in months.

Apples problem is that their updates make some apps unusable and they have to be upgraded or they’ll be lost to time. But you can still download apps even if you’re out of date. Contrast with when I had an android phone. I couldn’t DL a lot because “you need to upgrade your firmware” when no update was available.

LineageOS: https://www.lineageos.org/

There are several websites that allow you to download apks (android apps) without requiring a google account. https://apkpure.com/ is convenient, because they have an app which you can use to update your apps without having to manually download anything.
F-droid is a repository for open source apps (which are ad free).

Why not just say "Hey Siri turn off Wifi" or make a turning off Wifi shortcut?
https://www.quora.com/Is-there-a-shortcut-on-iOS-11-to-completely-turn-off-WiFi-When-I-turn-off-WiFi-in-the-control-panel-the-turn-my-phone-off-and-then-back-on-the-WiFi-is-also-back-on

It's an apple app you can use to combine multiple tasks into one. So you could make a shortcut for "turn off wifi and bt" and then you can just go into the shortcuts app and press that and it disabled both. I believe you can also set a Siri voice command (that you record yourself so it can be any phrase) for shortcuts as well

Why the fuck won’t they just let me turn WiFi and bt off permanently like in the past by just pressing a button?

I guess I can use Siri in the time being.

I don’t have that app. Guess it’s time to upgrade.

Another issue is Apple Music. I love Apple Music and it’s my music streaming service of choice.

But I also drive a lot while listening to music and the fucking thing always automatically connects to Apple Music anytime and plays music without me asking it to any time I get in my damn car.

It’s gotten to the point where I’d sometimes fight Apple Music with other music apps. There’s an app I use that lets you listen to music on YouTube with the phone locked because I’m not paying google ten dollars a month for that feature. And sometimes I’ll be listening to my jams, and then Apple Music wants to auto play. But I cannot turn Apple Music off. It’s just there in the background and you can’t turn it off. So they keep fighting when I’m just trying to listen to my tunes.

It was at that moment I considered switching to android. I have completely lost control of my own damn phone.

In iOS 11 and later, when you toggle the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth buttons in Control Center, your device immediately disconnects from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessories. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will continue to be available, so you can use these important features:

    AirDrop
    AirPlay
    Apple Pencil
    Apple Watch
Continuity features, like Handoff and Instant Hotspot
    Instant Hotspot
    Location Services

 ::) ::) ::)

But ya the "hey siri" method is the quickest way to turn it off for real.

my car also does auto play of whatever i was last doing on my phone as well but it's a "feature" of the car that i could disable. you might check on yours to see if thats the same thing.

WiFi “disabled”, running on LTE. Mind the low battery. Nothing running.

Go to settings and we see that despite no WiFi on its actually still on. More like “off”.

So I get in my car and fucking Adore starts playing for the 999999th time because it starts with an A.

Notice it’s a background app. When I click it goes to Apple Music but then after a while Apple Music automatically reboots and I hear,”ooooOOOOOOOOOHHHhhhhhhhhh, BABYyyy!!” I did not tell it I want to play this song. Shit, I didn’t even have Bluetooth ON and it just started automatically.

It’s driving me nuts.

I no longer control my own phone. iPhone used to be about simplicity. What the fuck happened? Being contained to apples proprietary shit is fine when it’s simple but when it’s doing shit you don’t want it to do you lack anything in the way of options. I loathe it.

Same reason :no1curr about Linux in general: You can't run shit you want to run on it (Linux) without a huge pain in the ass (Proton, WINE, etc.) to get it running... only for an update (Google, in this/phones case) to break it.

If you really want an android phone, what's your budget, and provider? I'm on T Mobile and you can get a decent new phone with good specs for $350-400. The high end phones are just as expensive as an iPhone though.

You can get something on this unlocked for $300. I think [name redacted] has this phone and recommends it.

I think the best/most feature rich Samsung Galaxy phone was the S5 from 2014. There is a version with two sim slots AND a dedicated microSD slot (called S5 Duos, last Galaxy S with this feature), it was the penultimate Galaxy S with user-replaceable battery (and they are cheap; you can still get new genuine batteries for ~$10, I just checked). To have the battery of a newer Galaxy S replaced you need to send it in and it'll cost you about $70. The S5 is water proof, has a finger print sensor (and all other sensors newer Galaxy S phones have) and it can record Ultra HD video, has a USB 3 port with USB OTG, meaning you can connect a portable hard drive or card reader. It even features an infrared port so you can use it as a remote control for your TV. What's incredible is that even though it is now five years old (of course Samsung stopped support years ago, last official update was Android 6), the S5 is actually fast enough (2.5GHz quad core CPU) to run the latest Android flawlessly.  Look at how smoothly Lineage OS 16 (Android 9) runs (20 seconds in):
It's a shame they don't make phones like this anymore but quite understandable from a business perspective. Gotta get people to upgrade more frequently.

This.  You can get it straight from Google with a bullshit-free monthly payment plan, too.  Stock Android OS with no crap on top of it like Samsung phones and all the updates come to Pixel first, plus free unlimited photo/video cloud storage for a couple of years.  Our Pixel 2s are just about paid off.  Will probably get Pixel 4s as soon as they go up for sale.

Yes I will say Samsung comes with a lot of Samsung app shit on it which I do find annoying

there is a dedicated physical Bixby button on my S8 and I hate it and don't want to use Samsung's garbage assistant and if I press it by accident it opens this crap and starts talking at me, and apparently the only way to stop it is to create a Samsung account and sign in so you can actually enter the app and change the functionality of the button  :maf
