Can't really find a "clean" version of the level theme from this game but it's good synthwave

Nice nice nice. Do try to keep in mind to only embed one video per post, just because of the slow loading that happens on mobile once these pages get filled with more posts. Not the end of the world. It's worth it though.

I wanted to share the VGM podcasts that I enjoy from time to time or on the regular:

The Legacy Music Hour - Strictly an 8 and 16-bit affair. The vibe and back and forth between the hosts might be hit and miss. I dig it. If you don't, most episodes currently are just mixtapes of old episodes that forego any talking by the hosts.

Super Marcato Bros. VGM Podcast - 2 brothers who have a background in music and are composers themselves. They play snippets of tracks and discuss them. Sometimes to a more music theory crowd, but I think it's still enjoyable to the layman music fan.

Level with Emily Reese - Emily Reese interviews game composers. She's fantastic. Emphasis on western composers due to language barrier I suppose.

Pixel Beat - Just a mixtape of a specific topic or game. I actually love what this one guy does.

Sound of Play - The music side of the Cane and Rinse podcast. Usually very British. Sometimes there are interesting guests from inside the industry. Typically about 9 or so tracks are played with quite a bit of talking in between setting up the track or discussing something about it. I must admit that usually I am not too keen on the discussion here like I am in these other podcasts. I find that it goes on too long usually without anything too interesting being said. Every tenth episode focuses on a specific theme or game/series. There's some mixtape episodes thrown in for good measure sometimes.

Gravity Rush/Gravity Daze - Discovery of Gravitation

I think this OST may be my favorite of this gen. Whenever I'm listening to some vgm playlist without paying much attention, one of these songs will pop up and my ears suddenly hone in and mind goes, "what is this". 8 times out of 10 it's from this game. I never played it which is why it never triggers for me right away.

as it says:

Quote
From two powerhouses of the video game music world, experience an incredible performance of the monumental solo guitar composition, The RPG National Anthem Variations. For RPGNAV, Eric Roth, the music director of A New World: intimate music from FINAL FANTASY, arranges the Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY for solo guitar and follows it with seven surprising and creative variations that destroy any barriers between classical music traditions and video game music excellence. The virtuoso solo guitar performer Sam Griffin (also of Super Guitar Bros.) brings this amazing music to life.

With Streets of Rage 4 being out, I was hoping for the return of SOR1 tracks in the retro mode... Sadly, nothing but the 8-bit ending music was included.  :doge

I'll argue to my death bed that SOR1 was Yuzo in his prime.. even over the mighty SOR2 with it's stellar OST...
Needless to say, I'd kill for this track in SOR4  (PC mod maybe?).. this track chugs so hard..

To all the SOR1 tracks that SOR2 over shadowed...

I think Spelunker was one of the only times where a western-made game became super popular in Japan but remains super obscure in its home (maybe Lode Runner too?)

This song always makes me think of The Strokes. I can almost imagine Julian's vocals on this track. The simple drum line, the emotive "guitar".

Aside from that, I just like this musical piece.

Quote
Deus Ex is one of the most revered games in history, featured on many "best games of all time" lists. It broke new ground with player choice and depth of story for a first-person experience. And the soundtrack, which establishes a unique, futuristic gritty atmosphere, is highly regarded to this day.

Now, two of the original composers, Alexander Brandon and Michiel van den Bos, have returned to the soundtrack they first wrote 20 years ago. In revisiting some of the game's most iconic themes, they have decided to keep some tracks true to the original, touched up using modern production techniques; other tracks are fully reimagined and will give even dedicated fans something new to listen to. It's a celebration of two decades of Deus Ex and a "thank you" to the fans who have kept their love for the game alive over the years.

I'm down. I'll join you on this countdown.

Day 1: Title screen music

I don't believe this is actually in the Wii version (The Trilogy edition). Hopefully the rumor of the Switch port will have the Metroid Prime title screen again. Or maybe I'm misremembering it. Something was slightly different between the screens on the Gamecube version and the Wii version. I think it was this.

fact check: TRUE

I'd like to try this countdown (if I can keep up with it)...

My Day 2 pick that almost immediately popped in my head was this....

tbf, I think there's an option to start a different level, but who doesn't want to start with this stage?  ;)  The music just slams you into the battle.

Day 2 is easy since none of you took it. Streets of Rage 2 - Go Straight. But that's probably one of the most posted songs around videogame message boards :lol

So let's stick with the Genesis with a series that I probably wouldn't need to hang onto in the future. Sonic the Hedgehog. Good ol Green Hill Zone

Nintex, where you at? I thought you were leading the charge here keeping us on schedule.

Day 3: 8-bit music

I don't really know what the Commodore 64 SID chip is I tried to look up if it was an 8-bit sound chip and didn't find much in 5 minutes. So Monty on the Run will sit on the sidelines. Castlevania it is.

edit: though I guess since the Commodore 64 was an 8-bit computer I guess the SID chip would be 8-bit too even if that doesn't actually make any logical sense necessarily, but fuck it it was the mid 80s so there is my half assed logic.

F-Zero -> Nope has an Arcade port also do handhelds count
Street Fighter II -> lmao what you thinking Nintex
Terranigma -> Might need later plus not officially a series
Super Mario! -> Oh, I see you forgot about the PC games

Wait maybe Banjo? Hold on, did Perfect Dark ever get ported. No, Rare Replay never made it to PC  :whew

FFIX overworld theme is something I always come back to. And really it was the first thing that came to my mind, which tells me that should be my pick.

Svejk, YES! Abso-fucking-lutely. Great choice.

Day 6 - relaxing music

Me, I'm going to go with something that really struck a chord with me back in the day that I would play every now and then throughout the years and I'm happy it's on PC now too for all eternity. Flower. Perhaps the only game where I was happy to be using Sixaxis controls? Possibly. I wouldn't want to experience the game in any other way. The game touches on multiple emotions. From peaceful to sad to triumphant. It is a very special game to me and one that brings up very good memories. It's a sort of evergreen in that regard. I feel like it's ageless. There are some invisible walls (which often times is played off as being wind that pushes you back into the "playing area", but other than that one doesn't get the impression that the game is somehow dated. It sort of stands alone doing its thing.

there were two options I could have selected. One would have been the level select theme "Lazy Daydream", but I have the vision in my head of being in an apartment by a busy street (maybe in San Fran?) that sort of keeps one a step away from true peace. So I think the appropriate choice is the first level theme, "Life as a Flower". This level is truly nothing but pure peace as you leisurely make your way touching various petals before concluding at a large tree that if memory serves me correctly grows a bunch of leaves at the end or maybe changes color? Either way you have no care in the world as you make your way through this stage.
