Whats the deal with you, tubers?
« on: November 06, 2019, 08:58:57 PM »
Like, I think being unable to comprehend why these freaks are popular was the moment (earlier this decade) when I realised that I'm getting older and there are generations younger than me on the internet.

Anyhow I recently wanted to show someone some no-nonsense gameplay from Tembo the Badass Elephant, so I typed "tembo the badass elephant gameplay" into Youtube. Found a video by "jacksecpticeye", the name rang a bell so I was like OK this is obviously a popular content creator with millions of subscribers so I'll see what the buzz is about.

Jesus christ, some fucking tosspot was screaming at me immediately and I lasted about 5 seconds before I had to turn it off. How/why do kids like pieces of shit like this guy and "Angry Joe"? Has anyone cracked the code?

 :whatsthedeal

This has been a thing for like...a decade?  Maybe more already?  Angry Joe is more of a Youtube reviewer.  I don't care much for his content but he's been doing it since 2008 and is more along the lines of an Angry Video Game Nerd clone.

I don't generally watch or care for any "lets play" videos, but I like a Dashie Games video every now and then.  Most of these streamers are fucking boring, but the ones with an actual personality can be fun.

Youtube itself has exacerbated all this since their algos have increasingly required more subs/likes/views in order for certain things to occur that are only benecifial to a channel. So the thumbnails/titles become more clickbaity, the ADD-editing increased to preserve retention, the constant reminders to subscribe and such.

Ironically it reminds me a bit of SEO shills gaming web results, making certain queries useless for discerning users, except unlike that Google seems to encourage it on Youtube.

While on the subject, what's the deal with some of these Youtubers and super-long reviews?  Video game and movie reviews that are 2-3 hours long?  Who the hell is going to sit there and watch that?

I see that Angry Joe just recently uploaded a 36 minute Terminator review plus a 37 minute video talking about the movie bombing.  He also has a Star Wars *trailer reaction* video that is 46 fucking minutes.  What the hell is there to talk about for that long? :dizzy

I usually do a search with no commentary, or like Spieler said, longplays.  Not only are the highly annoying to listen too, you try and pull up an innocent video on a Zelda game for your kid to see how you get past a certain part, and some nutcup is sitting there, "OH I GOT A RUPEE!! YAYYYY FUCK YEAH!  I'M TOTALLY GONNA OWN THIS BITCH OF A DUNGEON NOW.  **GASSSSSP...  NO WAY!!  SHIT!!  OH MY GOD!!! I THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH WITH THAT ENEMY!! I just can't believe "religious symbolism in metal gear solid 3:24:18" has 1.8 million views, or whatever. no one is sitting there all evening to listen to some jackoff ramble endlessly right? does it count as a view as long as someone clicks it?

Yeah, it's basically just clicking the video. On autoplay it's different but you generally don't need to watch a video anywhere to completion to be counted z a view.

It's a really complicated formula they use, but the rule of thumb is something like if you watch 15-30 seconds it counts as a view if it's 3 minutes or longer. Views also "expire" somehow. The one Ron Swanson clip on my account has gone over a million views like four times and fallen back under it.

If you monetize the formula is even more complicated. It's funny when people like Boogie1488 are complaining that "YouTube is taking food out of my mouth" because the formula shifts and now says to pay him less for his views. Like you sit in a chair and ramble breh.

I don't get it at all.  My wife watches a bunch of makeup "personalities" even though she says most of them are annoying and/or don't know that much about makeup.  But it's like all other media, you're not forced to watch or listen to it, so whatever.  If some people figured out how to sucker some conglomerate into paying them tons of money for just sitting there and talking, then more power to them.

Stephen A Smith: The Movie

ESPN is so tabloid and it makes so much money. So I guess the American people get what they deserve.  :comeon

Although the game show stuff like PTI and Around the Horn is pretty fun with the more casual and self aware attitude. Otherwise the ESPN talking heads on anything other than Sportcenter make me want to bash my head in.

Yeah I tend to find some of the Xers on Youtube to be much more tolerable than the hyperactive zoomers and their HEYYYGUYSWASSUPITSYOBOY...

Game Sack, Chrontendo, Metal Jesus, Top Hat Gaming Man, My Life in Gaming, Sega Lord X, are channels I follow religiously. Slopes Game Room has some good vids too (I posted the History of Wipeout in the random talk thread), and I like davidvinc, a jacked gay dude who makes all these RPG focused videos with topics like "Top 10 most annoying Sega CD RPG dungeons" or "Top 10 best SNES towns".

I'll also watch the Dunkey vids if he plays a game I'm interested in, but I'm not enamored with him like the rest of the Bore seems to be.

My daughter used to watch Roblox videos on YouTube, but thankfully stopped once her reading skills improved (she's a mad book reader) and I gave her the 3DS for Pokemon games.

Holy shit, every single person on those videos yelled and scream incessantly. My wife and I were ready to light her iPad on fire.

Didn't realize you didn't know who he is (was?).   :lol  Yeah, he was a giant AVGN rip-off who stole lines directly from AVGN videos.  He got shit on by a lot of people, but despite this, still got a following at one point and was even a featured content creator on Youtube way back in its early days.

All this "drama" was just shit from fanboys.  I think this is the only thing James Rolfe ever said about him:

Irate Gamer finally "admitted" to copying AVGN years later.  Sorta.  It's all  very much :no1curr at this point.  I think this is the video if you want to sit through this shit.  I wouldn't.

I like AVGN, shtick and all.  His recent videos haven't been as good, and that's either due to him essentially having run out of material (possibly all of the "shitty" games from his youth have been covered) and/or the team of writers that now come up with the scripts for him not being all that great.

NOICE. What a loser.

The truth is I enjoy mostly the videogame channels that either talk about history of games, do deep dives into specific games, or just talk about certain concepts. Here is my list of Videogame channels that fit into that box that I am subscribed to. I'm going to omit all the ones that are related to videogame music.

Ahoy - I love this channel. The gun videos are great and then he went way beyond that recently

Archipel - Excellent interviews with Japanese devs as well as other things. Weebs will love this. Oh wait, that's me. A pathetic weeb. But seriously. That Dreamcast 2 parter. *muah*. Beautiful.

Capcom Fighters - Street Fighter 5 tournaments and shit. Only competitive gaming I ever watch. Don't even bother trying to catch it live or keep track of schedules. I just see what's up when I go to the channel. Yes, they have EVO SF5 action.

Censored Gaming - The info is good. Sometimes it's eye rolling though. People losing their shit over titties  ::) . Comments can be pretty bad vibes. Point being it's a shitty audience and kind of a borderline dumb channel, but it has its actual purpose if you can get over that and cut through the BS.

Crowbcat Yes, he did that stupid 4chan Kangz meme joke in one video (or was that Dunky?), otherwise I've never seen anything that would suggest this dude is a shitheel. I get a kick out of the montages. Don't necessarily take the videos to heart. It is hyperbolic to a point.

CuteFloor - various cool old school games stuff

DidYouKnowGaming? - game factoid mumbo jumbo

Electric Playground - Interviews are great. That's the main strength here. Movie reviews are a hard pass (I laughed at the Lighthouse review. It's basically "the question we all want to know is can Robert Pattinson be a good Batman ".  ??? ??? ??? No I am not kidding you  :lol) Game reviews are mmmmkay I guess. He just loves everything so I don't see much value in them. Interviews are fantastic though.

Errant Signal - People who unironically use Ess Jay dubya will hate this guy. Go yell SOY BOY at him.

Foxcade - analysis and retrospectives

Game Maker's Toolkit - top tier. Absolutely top tier

Gaming Historian - self explanitory

GmanLives - Good Australian bloke. Likes to be one of the boys, so don't bother if you are incredibly sensitive. This guy knows first person gaming.

Kim Justice - Pass if you're a transphobe. Kim has incredible insight especially into the British gaming scene of the past. This channel is a treasure. Some great documentary level stuff here and there. She does way more than most channels cobble up together.

KingK - retrospectives

LGR - mostly computer things. Guy gives off a nice kind vibe.

Matthewmatosis - long form stuff and some reviews that dig a little deeper.

My Life In Gaming - various things mostly focusing on retro related things

Noah Caldwell-Gervais - long form looks at games or series. Also some odd travel related videos. It's... not an odd channel, but kind of an interesting mix in that way.

PtoPOnline - cutting room floor stuff, alpha footage, scrapped games. Cool tidbits. Rarely anything substantial beyond the main curiosity.

Raycevick - various gaming topics

Summoning Salt - I don't even care about speed running, so I'm not sure why I'm subbed to this. Good channel if you do care though.

Super Bunnyhop - various gaming things as well as industry topics.

The 8-Bit Guy - I love this Franklin the Turtle looking motherfucker. Awesome hardware stuff.

Whitelight - Analysis, critiques

Writing on Games - Analysis, reviews.

Whew... there you have it.

But now he has to do the typical Youtuber YELLING or weird faces on video descriptions to make money.

Matthewmatosis is the only one of these videogame "essayists" worth a shit, of those i've seen.
Errant signal, Game Maker Tool Kit, Hbomberguy and Joseph Anderson were all either covering obvious stuff, or outright bad in my opinion.

MandaloreGaming does more review type stuff, but they're pretty well done and in depth, and not about the usual games.

Only gaming youtuber worth a damn in general is, of course, DSP.

A lot of degeneration going on because there's only so much you can do with the format, I guess, before passing that threshold of an actual film production and making some actual worthwhile content on your own, on top of brutal competition for attention and having to keep an inhuman pace for the upload schedule.

I don't know how kids do it, but they instinctively flock to music/personalities that people older than them (parents, siblings, teachers) would hate. I don't even think it's a deliberate decision, they just inherently know.

zoomers have very short attention spans and they crave constant jump cuts and people acting super over the top. When I interacted with my little cousin, who is like 16 now, I discovered that nothing he finds humorous is funny to me. There is a disconnect.

Like this whole Tik Tok thing, I don't get it man.
