So let me be clear, I've got no problem with going to Taco Bell and putting money directly into Mexican pockets but last night at my parents' (we're white) for Christmas dinner, my mom decided she was going to make burritos.At first, I was shocked that she even managed to buy all of the ingredients as when I was a cashier, I would throw a hard side eye at any white person buying groceries for a clearly ethnic meal which was usually enough for them to say "don't worry about it" and leave the store. But anyway, my mom (she's white) decided to buy all of these things for the express purpose of making a meal from an ethnicity other than our own.I explained to here that this was clearly cultural appropriation and that I wanted to eat something different. She said I was free to as long as I made it myself which was a trap as she knows I don't have any culinary skills to speak of.So anyway, I ate the burritos but made it very clear by the expression on my face that I wasn't happy about it. I didn't even eat the baklava she'd bought for dessert.So now I'm looking for a way to make up for my mom's ignorance (she's white). Now, to compound this, I actually had asked her for something this year. In the last 6 months, I lost 80 lbs on a keto diet, something I'm super proud of. I would text her my progress when I'd lose weight, she knows it was a huge deal to me. A big part of how I did it was by completely cutting out sugar from my diet. I have had an enormous sweet tooth ever since I was little. So, for christmas, all I asked her for was to get me some candy, any candy. I told her christmas day would be the lone cheat day for me, the day I'd forget about keto just for a day and eat all the candy I wanted. Didn't have to be expensive candy, just any candy. I would bring it up pretty much every time we'd talk, which is pretty frequently, how I was excited for candy on christmas day. She didn't get me any candy. She actually made fun of my old weight and how I was "begging for candy" when I walked in, in front of the whole family (extended and all) which was at my mom's house for christmas. I'm sensitive about my weight, so right from the moment I walked in, I felt awkward.
