I don't know what Thebishop said, but I remember the Brazil post. He basically said, as a South American, He doesn't trust the US, even if Hilary Clinton was president. That is why the people who agreed with the post were not banned, as there was no way to say what they were agreeing with.

I hate that it feels necessary, that it feels like the problem won't have worked itself out of Era's collective angst in some months, but no more can I look away and ignore it and trust only to naive hope. I hate having to be a woman that feels she has to qualify her post as being a woman's perspective in order to cut through some of the fog and confusion, but now feels like one such time. It disturbs me, honestly, to see the concept of personal truth repurposed as a rhetorical bludgeon when a given person's favored political candidate disputes the facts of a conversation with a colleague. I won't pretend to be unbiased in this. I like Warren. I think she wants to do right, but I'm appalled at the eagerness of other parties to appropriate the concepts of "her truth" and "believe women" as tools to arbitrate who is telling the truth and who isn't in a situation fundamentally divorced from a question of sexual abuse and the failure of the justice system to protect victims. It doesn't just add a degree of exposure to Me Too for credible attacks of coming forward against abusers as potentially holding a political motivation, it kicks the door open against the wall and invites it.

Warren is neither the victim of a sexual abuser, harasser, or the justice system in this. Warren also isn't being ignored, nor is in any particular peril of being ignored, quite the opposite! She has friendly voices who have leapt to her defense, no request required, who speak to national audiences and are already shaping the discourse. Not only that, but as a cishet white woman of means inside the Democratic orthodoxy, she is a beneficiary of considerable privilege and instant credibility that many (myself included, bar being white) don't have. The voices of Cherokee people, and Cherokee women specifically, received nowhere near the same credibility nor signal boosting in the blood quantum furor that Warren unleashed, and there was no talk then of handing Cherokee women the final word on basis of their truth.

And Era, let's make no bones about it. The personal truth of leftist women, or conservative women for that matter, isn't counted as highly in disputes like this one. Even if we believe the blanket application of #metoo slogans to arbitrate political disagreement is positive (and we should not), its application is partial and dishonestly advocated. Meghan McCain is no more extended that rhetoric in her defense than Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or any woman at Jacobin or TYT are. Era is not the enlightened bulwark of post-sexist community we want to see it become. We can and should be better.

As to the reason we don't extend this defense uniformly, I feel, is because we would plainly see that a needed movement in Me Too had been taken and had the bottom dug out of it until it had lost all its salience and sharpness. The only winners in this race to the bottom are political figures and celebrity types who can easily bring to bear the loudest megaphones and the largest sympathetic audiences. Victims would once more become the great losers as the culture collectively pushes them again into the margins. The movement will have been taken away from the needy for use as an amplifier of the voices of the most able... until inevitably discredited for having done so. It would become a footnote in women's history within our lifetimes.

The primary rattling and infuriating people isn't an excuse when we stand at the brink of doing real damage to one of the most effective movements in many years. Choose another course, I beg you. Think past how you feel in this moment, past the primary, past Bernie and Warren. They'll work out their bargains and endorsements as they always have. The primary, and the vote in November isn't the end of the political, let alone the cultural process that shapes it. This post shouldn't be construed as mere alarm, nor a warning against a simple slippery slope. This is the cliff's edge over an abyss. Stop. Choose another course.
