Anyone excited to see an active Halo PC community?

Reach was when the abilities started getting a little too crazy, but the campaign/customization/modes were really fun, and it was the last Halo that had me coming back regularly.

Seeing as it's $10 and on Steam+Gamepass I hope it sticks as hard as CE did.

For the record: Riot-ass annihilated. This wouldn't even be happening if folks didn't hack their Russian F2P Halo 3 PC port and say "nah, fuck you" and continued to torrent the shit out of it when Microshaft attempted to C&D it. :rejoice :piss Riotous :piss2

I won't be getting it today since I'm waiting for my replacement PC parts to come in. But I might spend the $40 just to have them all in one go. Paying $10 a pop for Halo 1-3, and Reach pretty much pays for that already and I'll get 4 out of the deal even if I never touch it (:piss 343 :piss2 ) , so :trumps

But I'm waiting for /r/HaloOnline to fall on the sword and see how badly 343 fucked up despite the like year lag-time between announcement to Reach's "launch."

I'm keen for Reach as I've always loved the sci-fi military aesthetic tied to Bungie's work on Halo. Can't wait to go through all the games again, and there's really no excuse for shitty port/MCC work this time.

Side tangent, but it's fucked how garbage 343's design and approach to writing are in some lame effort to one-up Bungie's legacy. Says everything about the outcome though when you have Halo Infinite returning to its roots. Who knows if they'll be able to pull off a decent package.

On the story front, there's now this legacy baggage of advanced humans waging war with the Prophets against the Forerunners, then forcibly regressing to primitive societies 100,000 years ago ?? Congrats 343, you've done a fantastic job at undermining the human journey while pulling off the same sci-fi shit as Assassin's Creed  :yuck

Reach for ten bucks and ODST for five means I'll gladly pay fifteen for the Master Cheifless titles of the MCC. Maybe I'll pick up Halo 1 when it releases. Halo 2 and 3 and can stay away.

Edit: i actually didn't even remember 4 or 5, which says a lot.

Too early in the morning or something?

Installer takes like 5 seconds (probably just downloading another installer) but then says nothing... item still has "Pre-Order" in the store so I guess it's just not unlocked.

reach mp has abysmal game balance; a full clip was usually my enough to strip an opponent's shields so my #1 weapon for kills was the fucking fist. however, the game had better curation than any I've ever seen with new modes and maps rotating in every week to keep things interesting. I ended up playing it a ton because of that.

Halo 1 multiplayer is still my favorite- looking forward to getting to play that again.  Dunno if I want Reach since that's where I started losing interest, but it's been so long that for ten bucks I'm tempted to check it out.  Might get Halo 2 and 3 too.  Fuck Halo 4, lol 343, etc etc.

I'm excited, but my current laptop is ancient. Mostly excited for pre-Reach entries on Steam. Need my Halo 1 campaign fix which I used to do once a year for the longest time (plus my CD copy doesn't work on my Win 7 laptop. Sure I can PCgamingwiki what to do, but this old thing is probably so dusty and shit that I don't bother playing non-visual novels at this point.)

tl;dr - I need a new laptop or desktop at some point in 2020

As far as basic tips to get gid with FPSs:
Set the Windows Mouse Sensitivity slider to 6/11. Disable Enhance accuracy. Disable smoothing.

Set your mouse's software to 800-850 dpi. Change your sensitivity accordingly through the game settings.

Microsoft literally started bringing all of their first party titles to PC years ago.. but sure, it was some Russian hackers.
I genuinely think that the PC community for ElDewrito affected this release.

The community for Halo PC (which was sizable), finally blew up when a good release came their way. Even as they were bringing games over their comments on Halo were very much always the same: "Halo's gameplay would have to be remade" "Halo's engine post Halo 2 is 'unportable'". They even made comments about Halo 5(?)'s Forge Mode on PC was abandoned despite the work put into it.

They then went on to work on porting old Halos to Xbox One, an architecture that is almost identical to PC.

You think that was motivated by some Russian hackers?  That seems like the way more logical path to why we are getting Halo on PC.

Either way I'm not the one weirdly obsessing over this lol.. timu randomly brings this up and I have to remind myself even WTF the original conversation was.   Maybe Russian hackers did motivate all of this, I really don't give a fuck, the game sucks anyways lol

Played the first two levels of the campaign on heroic. Not cause it's the "true difficulty", but because the game was balanced for controllers. I'm enjoying it so far, outside of having to scrounge for weapons in the middle of firefights.

On the technical side:
- Still looks very much like a 360 game. I expected it to be spruced up more. How is it 22GB with textures like these? (Videos, is my guess.)
- Capped to 60fps, but sticks to that at least. (Considering how it looks, it would be a surprise if it didn't.)
- No advanced graphics options. Just an unexplained toggle for 'improved' graphics. No idea what it does.
- Audio is broken somehow. Everything sounds like you're hearing it through a blanket.

Wait this being released in a specific order? That's stupid. I wanted to get this and play Halo 1. I've never played a Halo game outside flirting with multi when it first came out and wanted to go through the campaign. I avoided Halo because I was an elitist jrpg gamer back then and wanted to give them an earnest shot. Releasing them incrementally is stupid af.

its pretty stupid. would be far better to just have all the (worthwhile, they could have held back reach and 4 and no one would have cared) games at once to give us hoppers with "best of" map playlists.

unless your argument is that 343 is incapable of releasing them all at once without it being a completely broken pile of shit, which in that case i'd agree.

If you want a quick summary of the campaign so you don't have to play any of then:

Religion is one of the forms of spiritual oppression which everywhere weighs down heavily upon the masses of the people, over burdened by their perpetual work for others, by want and isolation. Impotence of the exploited classes in their struggle against the exploiters just as inevitably gives rise to the belief in a better life after death as impotence of the savage in his battle with nature gives rise to belief in gods, devils, miracles, and the like. Those who toil and live in want all their lives are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven. Religion is opium for the people. Religion is a sort of spiritual booze, in which the slaves of capital drown their human image, their demand for a life more or less worthy of man.

My best guess is that it was a good way for them as developers to build their HD remake, and be able to on the fly switch back and forth to make sure their "new engine" looks right.   Then someone got the bright idea that this useful dev approach would be a cool thing for gamers to use.

For what it's worth they did hire legit Sci-Fi writers for the actual Halo books.

Some people who love the Halo story are talking about those extended works, which are probably at least decent.

(Greg Bear is one of my favorites, everyone read Blood Music)

I think 3-4 levels from Halo CE were legit revolutionary in gaming;  the beach stage probably being the best but even the second stage was pretty incredible.  And the snowy one with the tanks.

Also revolutionary, specifically for console gaming:

- Being only able to carry 2 weapons;  this simplified the controls, whereas every other FPS game was trying to mimic how on PC most games let you store 10 weapons, using 0-9 keys to access.   Having 2 weapons meant only 1 button needed for weapon switch, and no need to scroll through a bunch to get to what you want.
- Dedicated grenade / grenade switch button, this was dope too (and only possible because of the above single button needed for weapon handling)
- The heavy gravity / general slowness, PC games designed to be able to spin on a dime with a mouse translated to PC always felt off.. whereas Halo was designed around the limitations of an analog stick
- Auto-aim, most obvious advancement

Honestly the only other console FPS at the time that actually felt great to play was Quake 64.

Didn’t Goldeneye have just 2 weapons? I was underwhelmed (in comparison to hype) by it too so maybe I am remembering it wrong.

Agree Halo was 2nd great FPS on console, it had a pretty strong PC contingent too. I think the collection will do well on PC TBH.

Nah, GoldenEye had more than 2 weapons at a time.   You could use one button to cycle either way though (had to hold it down IIRC.)

GoldenEye was OK if you changed from the awful default control scheme (which had the cursor not locked in the center, and instead you aimed it around the screen) but it was just so lifeless to me.   It was a huge step back from games like Quake and other PC FPS of the time, felt ancient to me.

I only played it like a dozen times ever and never lost though lol;  man it was nice when nobody on console, even people who thought they were amazing actually had good FPS skills.   I was not ever good enough to dominate on PC, but I could pick up any console FPS and dominate anyone even if I'd never played the game.  Just stuff like general map awareness, strafing, camping for item spawns (and memorizing where items were) most people just didn't do back then.

Then by like.. Halo 2, I sucked bad.

i always read that goldeneye let you plug in two controllers and use two sticks to move/look. never had a 64 so never tried that but pretty cool if it actually worked well.

The prevailing memory I have of Halo is the "combat puzzle" buzz word people parroted thoughtlessly.
Every action game is a combat puzzle. Dig Dug is a combat puzzle. /shakefist

I do understand why that stuck though, since the enemy and encounter design is top quality. :delicious

I have played Combat Evolved before. First on PC, then on 360 back compat, but I didn't realize what made these games special then. Two-thirds into Reach, and more open minded than I was, I think I get it now. Positioning just matters a lot more than twitch reflexes. It makes perfect sense for controllers (but it also works with a mouse). Halo is a different kind of FPS, not a lesser FPS (e.g. the stop and pop in a narrow corridor kind :shh).

Thanks. As someone interested and has never fucked with Halo that sounds really appealing. Got an Xbox controller here for pc too. Looking forward to Reach now.

Are you referring to single player or multiplayer btw?

Single player with mouse and keyboard. Gonna try it with a controller too, but I doubt I'll like it.

Played one match of slayer, but couldn't find another game within 2 minutes and stopped trying. :idont

Yeah the match making too long. Doubly so for someone like me just trying to play objective modes in H1,H2, and maybe H3.

How is Halo single player unique then
