Anyone excited to see an active Halo PC community?

Reach was when the abilities started getting a little too crazy, but the campaign/customization/modes were really fun, and it was the last Halo that had me coming back regularly.

Seeing as it's $10 and on Steam+Gamepass I hope it sticks as hard as CE did.

For the record: Riot-ass annihilated. This wouldn't even be happening if folks didn't hack their Russian F2P Halo 3 PC port and say "nah, fuck you" and continued to torrent the shit out of it when Microshaft attempted to C&D it. :rejoice :piss Riotous :piss2

I won't be getting it today since I'm waiting for my replacement PC parts to come in. But I might spend the $40 just to have them all in one go. Paying $10 a pop for Halo 1-3, and Reach pretty much pays for that already and I'll get 4 out of the deal even if I never touch it (:piss 343 :piss2 ) , so :trumps

But I'm waiting for /r/HaloOnline to fall on the sword and see how badly 343 fucked up despite the like year lag-time between announcement to Reach's "launch."

I'm keen for Reach as I've always loved the sci-fi military aesthetic tied to Bungie's work on Halo. Can't wait to go through all the games again, and there's really no excuse for shitty port/MCC work this time.

Side tangent, but it's fucked how garbage 343's design and approach to writing are in some lame effort to one-up Bungie's legacy. Says everything about the outcome though when you have Halo Infinite returning to its roots. Who knows if they'll be able to pull off a decent package.

On the story front, there's now this legacy baggage of advanced humans waging war with the Prophets against the Forerunners, then forcibly regressing to primitive societies 100,000 years ago ?? Congrats 343, you've done a fantastic job at undermining the human journey while pulling off the same sci-fi shit as Assassin's Creed  :yuck

Reach for ten bucks and ODST for five means I'll gladly pay fifteen for the Master Cheifless titles of the MCC. Maybe I'll pick up Halo 1 when it releases. Halo 2 and 3 and can stay away.

Edit: i actually didn't even remember 4 or 5, which says a lot.

reach mp has abysmal game balance; a full clip was usually my enough to strip an opponent's shields so my #1 weapon for kills was the fucking fist. however, the game had better curation than any I've ever seen with new modes and maps rotating in every week to keep things interesting. I ended up playing it a ton because of that.

Halo 1 multiplayer is still my favorite- looking forward to getting to play that again.  Dunno if I want Reach since that's where I started losing interest, but it's been so long that for ten bucks I'm tempted to check it out.  Might get Halo 2 and 3 too.  Fuck Halo 4, lol 343, etc etc.

I'm excited, but my current laptop is ancient. Mostly excited for pre-Reach entries on Steam. Need my Halo 1 campaign fix which I used to do once a year for the longest time (plus my CD copy doesn't work on my Win 7 laptop. Sure I can PCgamingwiki what to do, but this old thing is probably so dusty and shit that I don't bother playing non-visual novels at this point.)

tl;dr - I need a new laptop or desktop at some point in 2020

As far as basic tips to get gid with FPSs:
Set the Windows Mouse Sensitivity slider to 6/11. Disable Enhance accuracy. Disable smoothing.

Set your mouse's software to 800-850 dpi. Change your sensitivity accordingly through the game settings.

Played the first two levels of the campaign on heroic. Not cause it's the "true difficulty", but because the game was balanced for controllers. I'm enjoying it so far, outside of having to scrounge for weapons in the middle of firefights.

On the technical side:
- Still looks very much like a 360 game. I expected it to be spruced up more. How is it 22GB with textures like these? (Videos, is my guess.)
- Capped to 60fps, but sticks to that at least. (Considering how it looks, it would be a surprise if it didn't.)
- No advanced graphics options. Just an unexplained toggle for 'improved' graphics. No idea what it does.
- Audio is broken somehow. Everything sounds like you're hearing it through a blanket.

Wait this being released in a specific order? That's stupid. I wanted to get this and play Halo 1. I've never played a Halo game outside flirting with multi when it first came out and wanted to go through the campaign. I avoided Halo because I was an elitist jrpg gamer back then and wanted to give them an earnest shot. Releasing them incrementally is stupid af.

its pretty stupid. would be far better to just have all the (worthwhile, they could have held back reach and 4 and no one would have cared) games at once to give us hoppers with "best of" map playlists.

unless your argument is that 343 is incapable of releasing them all at once without it being a completely broken pile of shit, which in that case i'd agree.

If you want a quick summary of the campaign so you don't have to play any of then:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Religion is one of the forms of spiritual oppression which everywhere weighs down heavily upon the masses of the people, over burdened by their perpetual work for others, by want and isolation. Impotence of the exploited classes in their struggle against the exploiters just as inevitably gives rise to the belief in a better life after death as impotence of the savage in his battle with nature gives rise to belief in gods, devils, miracles, and the like. Those who toil and live in want all their lives are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven. Religion is opium for the people. Religion is a sort of spiritual booze, in which the slaves of capital drown their human image, their demand for a life more or less worthy of man.

Yeah online discussions about games used to skew younger;  but I was like 21 and plenty of people my age or older gushed over that crap.

And today they gush over shit like The Last of Us, plenty of grown ass men bragging about how it made them cry.

Whenever I read stuff like this, I try to imagine my dad or my grandpa at my age, getting hyped up for Frozen 2 or crying over Last of Us, and it freaks me. :lol

Didn’t Goldeneye have just 2 weapons? I was underwhelmed (in comparison to hype) by it too so maybe I am remembering it wrong.

Agree Halo was 2nd great FPS on console, it had a pretty strong PC contingent too. I think the collection will do well on PC TBH.

The prevailing memory I have of Halo is the "combat puzzle" buzz word people parroted thoughtlessly.
Every action game is a combat puzzle. Dig Dug is a combat puzzle. /shakefist

I do understand why that stuck though, since the enemy and encounter design is top quality. :delicious

I have played Combat Evolved before. First on PC, then on 360 back compat, but I didn't realize what made these games special then. Two-thirds into Reach, and more open minded than I was, I think I get it now. Positioning just matters a lot more than twitch reflexes. It makes perfect sense for controllers (but it also works with a mouse). Halo is a different kind of FPS, not a lesser FPS (e.g. the stop and pop in a narrow corridor kind :shh).

I don't know that it is, to be honest. Maybe it was? There have been many more shooters since. (Multi pioneer for consoles maybe? Did it pave the way for Modern Warfare's success? Dunno.)

My point is: it's suited to its platform without feeling compromised, like other console FPS. You could argue the two weapon limit is dumbing things down, or that any aim assist at all is anathema to shooters, but they do more than save on buttons with the former and the latter is a necessity. It's just a good shooter.
Well, Reach is, I don't remember Combat Evolved too well. Following Bungie's last Halo up with Bungie's first Halo is going to make for an interesting contrast. Hope the wait is not too long.

How is Halo single player unique then
The original was one of the first FPSes to take a rather true sandbox type approach to enemy encounters. Once you land on the Halo, it's not open world and it's certainly not non-linear, but when you get to the encounters you have more freedom than you traditionally did along with AI fighting alongside you that's simply not scripted. You might fight guys to the north of the building with a rifle and I might be taking them out on the southside with nades and melees.

On consoles especially this was rather groundbreaking, in part because it took until the Xbox's power to pull it off, PC less so but it was still an iteration further.

wasn't that already the plan? Aoe2 remaster was on Steam at launch just recently so I assumed they were just putting their stuff everywhere right away.

I mean it's possible, but so far this generation we've only had the Master Chief Collection, Gears 5 (which was day and date IIRC), and Sunset Overdrive on Steam from them.

We haven't gotten Forza Horizon 3 (PBUH), 4, Motorsport 5-6-7 (any of them, really) and their shit escaping UWP/UWA hell yet.

Speaking of which, apparently MCC is UWP/UWA? There's an article about enabling Forge in Reach right now before a patch enables it and you need a UWP editor apparently to do that.

If any of you play on PC, I'd like to get some of your gamertags to play with. I'm still FatalT on Live (I had to be FatalT1 on PSN though, sad panda). I don't really post much anymore because I've become a golem (you should see my social media, some of you are still friends with me and I don't even use that anymore except to post something stupid every once in a while like Baby Yoda) and distanced myself from participating in mostly everything online-related.

EDIT: Oh neat, I didn't know Cindi started posting here again. Last I remember she left for a while. I don't believe I was ever friends with her on Facebook though. I honestly don't even remember screen names but people like Doug, Ryan, Luke, Keith, Will, Jeremy, Maurice, Edward, and Thor are still people I remember and check up on every once in a while with Facebook, but I rarely post or participate in conversations. I remember only 4 of those's actual user names and I'm sure they're different now if you all are even still on here.
