The whole world is going to have to come to see money in a completely different way going forward. And by have to, I mean forced.
??? How so?

Money is made up nonsense and we're on the brink of creating a new world where money isn't a factor

Ya, we are moving to a sex work economy and my flabby ass is going to be poor.

So many people are going to die in the US.

Wife was asked to go home Friday (and used PTO).  She went back in this morning and was told "there's nothing to do with all our clients shut down.  We're worried about you (being pregnant).  Please go home."  Great, so uh...how about PAYING her for it.   :-\  She's gonna blow through all her PTO and then things are going to go to shit for us.  Fortunately my parents have offered to help out financially if it gets to that point.  I don't want to rely on them for that though.

On the lighter side, saw this on Twitter:

I've seen a lot of clap backs in the last 48 hours "It's not new cases, it's testing capacity increasing" and I guess it's technically correct but you could say that for every country.

Yeah I blew through a week of vacation last week self isolating, now reading an email from corporate saying if they force us to shut down they’ll pay a week and after that we’re required to use a week of vacation, and then recommended to use the rest... thanks guys! But I guess we can apply for unemployment in the 3rd week!

Slightly less infections and deaths today reported in the Netherlands and we've seeing this trend across Europe now that the restrictions have been active for a week or so.

Yesterday:
+ 573 infected
+ 43 deaths

today:
+ 545 infected
+ 34 deaths

Of those that died the average age is 82.

Gonna be awkward when I'm the only one with a job

Lots of optimism from a lot of Euro places over the stats for the last two days (except Spain and Italy, obviously), but the fatality wave is probably lagging behind someone being positive. I hope it's not misplaced.

The meteoric growth may partly be explained by testing capacity increasing faster (?) and that's maybe fair to put it that way but confirmed positives is among the few actual metrics we have and can compare (with all usual caveats) so I find the dismissiveness strange especially when some large populated states are still lagging in their efforts. USA is trending to have the most cases of any country soon and if it keeps on going will have the same number per capita as Europe which would shatter some of the illusions people are still counting on (the US is much less denser on average, etc...).

I am kind of less stressed about this all for some reason, even as we go into lockdown this afternoon. The numbers are pretty much all BS for the US, but the actual data we are getting from NY is showing this to still be what we thought it was...~70% of deaths are 70+ year-olds, and 80% of deaths for those under 70 are due to underlying condition. Hopefully vaccine or treatment happens sooner than later, ideally may help with seasonal flu or other viruses as well.

I think my opinion is we should try the lockdown/flatten the curve method for at least the month or so to see if we can prevent as much unnecessary death as possible, if possible. Locking things down seems to have a point of diminishing returns, without vaccine or any immunity will just flare up again down road. I don't think we should continue for months and burn down our entire economy though, and honestly don't think people here are ready for (or really want) sweeping social changes. Temporary measures can keep things going during a short lockdown period but we are not set up to sustain it long-term.

I optimistically believe the result of this will be there will should be move towards more socialized health care, in a brokedown and strange US way/MFA/etc. Europe will likely come out of this better than we will short-term due health care. I also believe it will should help fight to raise minimum wages. Best-case we start manufacturing more domestically. At the very least should result in more preparedness.

That or we have totally squandered the only opportunity to upend the boomers, trusting establishment to sort issue while diving into distractions. Nothing happens but a gradual decline into an imbalanced police state, while everything continues to go to shit.

I'm feeling less stressed too now that PANDEMIC is the norm.  Though just be aware that even if it's only the old dying, 20% of hospitalizations are people under 40 in the U.S. (I'm going to go a head and  guess this is obesity related) .

I mentioned Dr. Raoult, who's advocating Chloroquin like a motherfucker and published the study Trump is repeating (very, very small sample), and it already is turning weird with a couple of famous people asking to get transferred to the hospital he's working in Marseilles* and crowds in front of his hospital (he's apparently doing mass testing for everyone, I guess it's the antiviral test). He was already a media personality before that, supposedly the "top infection specialist worldwide" at one point, he's in an open rivalry with the Pasteur Institute so it's not too surprising he's turning it into a circus but man, the dude has a weird vibe.

* Nice's mayor who tested positive a few days ago, was on TV saying he already felt better because of Chloroquin which is obviously unscientific to the max.

'underlying conditions' in US (and I guess UK?) obesity will absolutely come into play, although at this point yeah not really data to prove it.

addition to the above I have no idea how the election plays out this November. who knows how much weight any stimulus will have to general public, in addition to the 40% or so of the population who will back Trump no matter what happens. people are literally ok with risking life to own the libs and I feel for the people stuck in red states.

Ya no data, just my guess - I should be careful about saying that explicity.  Also I bet that smoking will also be a underlying factor to the <40 hospitialized.

I think there is a bad local minimum there.  If its only 30% unemployment then ya there will be an increase in bad murders.  If it's like 60% unemployment then we might finally get whip out the guillotine and get some good murders going.

Hopefully Italy continues trending down. Feel terrible to say that as so many are still dying but the effectiveness of Italian measures would at least be a good sign that we can indeed flatten the curve.
It felt the numbers were stable in France last two days but cases and deaths spiked upward.

So our government has moved 1 step short of a lockdown.

- Any and all events or gatherings with more than 3 people are forbidden
- Fines for people that don't listen to the instructions
- Barbershops, nail salons etc. closed
- Only leave your house if absolutely necessary (groceries) or getting some fresh air
- Remain at 3 feet distance at all times (preferably even indoors)
- If one person in a household is sick, all should remain quarantined at home
- Mayors can decide for themselves to close additional gathering places if necessary

All of these regulations are in place until June 1st.

Turns Oregon has an executive order that

“ Therefore, the temporary rule expands the availability of benefits to any employee who is discharged, quits, or fails to apply for work because of “COVID-19 related situations.””
