This is common with a lot of data that countries record, infant mortality is the most famous one but I remember reading a comparative article that had like six disclaimers about some random education stat like sixth grade reading level or something. They were all Yuropean countries too with similar systems.

I once came across an article that mentioned an African country was boosting its internet access numbers by using a "theoretical number of people who could use a cafe 24/7 at one person using ten minutes" type metric. It was tied to some development aid thing where they were supposed to be hitting these milestones rather than looting too hard and the deadline was approaching. Yet there were lots of Western media stories about the "internet miracle" in said nation thanks to the aid. (The latter was the main point of the article.)

Beyond the arbitrary definition, it also makes sense with testing in very short supplies (at the beginning of the epidemic at least) and symptoms that can be undistinguishable with other types of flu that they didn't test post-mortem all deaths in retirement homes. That's maybe a mistake because they were obviously at-risk populations and potential clusters... I guess the problem became apparent as deaths, hospitalization or suspicious cases went critical mass in any one institution. I think that with more testing they also started including nursing home staff more regularly.

French authorities made the disambiguation very clear 4 or 5 days ago, I suspect it's probably because the media was probably going to report on it. There's an argument that changing the statistical definition mid-stream would be more confusing and make the data less useful (on top of being less shameful for our dear leaders...) but everyone should be mindful that the number of fatalities is probably higher (maybe a lot higher) than what we know at the moment. And really, I suspect that's true for most countries.

It's probably extra-sensitive in France after the absolute fiasco of the 2003 heat wave that killed an estimated 15k seniors. Health ministers don't have the best track record here, though the public and media also get pissy when too much is done (that happened with the H1N1, lots of treatment and masks bought for "nothing", the minister at the time got ridiculed for years about that...).

I think Fauci is actually being pretty kind to Trump with that estimate, he didn't specify a timeline (no one can, obviously) and a lot of states, despite the terrible leadership by Trump, have started implementing measures to help mitigate the worst hopefully. It's ten/twenty times the actual present Italian fatalities, so per capita roughly similar but in the upper bracket to account for the tardiness of the response. It's a terrible number but still palatable to compare it to a very bad flu, yet high enough the current administration could hope to officially undershoot it before the peak passes.

I don't blame him for playing the game because that's apparently the only way you can bait Trump into common sense, but it's a very non-committal, political statement to make.

Just an interesting detail, seems the UK removed Covid-19 from their list of high consequence infectious diseases recently, primarily due to it having a lower mortality rate than others on their HCID list, though it appears to still fit every other criteria of theirs. The original SARS remains classified as a HCID (which had almost a 10% mortality rate) as does MERS (30-40% mortality rate).

Quote from: gov.uk
As of 19 March 2020, COVID-19 is no longer considered to be a high consequence infectious diseases (HCID) in the UK. [...] They have determined that several features have now changed; in particular, more information is available about mortality rates (low overall) and there is now greater clinical awareness and a specific and sensitive laboratory test, the availability of which continues to increase.

The Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) is also of the opinion that COVID-19 should no longer be classified as an HCID.[/url]

Further down the page...

Quote from: gov.uk
In the UK, a high consequence infectious disease (HCID) is defined according to the following criteria:

- acute infectious disease
- typically has a high case-fatality rate
- may not have effective prophylaxis or treatment
- often difficult to recognise and detect rapidly
- ability to spread in the community and within healthcare settings
- requires an enhanced individual, population and system response to ensure it is managed effectively, efficiently and safely

Not to rain on your parade, but in reality sweden probably just tests not nearly enough and the big wave is coming. The CFR is at 3,6% which at this time points to a big dark number. The swedish death rate per capita is currently on par with the UK and twice as high as the US. Norway for example has about as many infections as sweden but less than a third of deaths...

Had to stand in line before I could enter the supermarket today. They were only letting in a few people at a time as a precaution.

... but I now have a very RARE sealed item for sale in MINT condition.
A 18 rolls toilet paper value pack from Page, extra soft and absorbent.
Bidding begins at $78 349 excluding shipping.

I have not seen such a premium toilet paper brand in stores for like a month.

I'm not suggesting we are doing better, just not worse. If the more draconian measures don't yield better results than a mere suggestion from the PM to act responsibly, there is literally no reason to implement them.

It's too premature to say Sweden's approach is yielding better or equal results. It may still, for particular reasons or a better general approach. I'd say it's riskier, but maybe your government will be vindicated.

I think they still have quarantine as an option for Stockholm, but wont do it unless they really really need to. And also that our experts thinks it's dangerous to implement it too early, since people will start to violate quarantine just as they are needed indoors the most.

I personally approve of how they've been running it, and it seems like most people agree.
It also has the added benefit of making people focus more on their own actions and less on everyone else.  :)

A choir practice held in Washington state on March 10, as the new coronavirus was spreading in Seattle, left dozens of people with COVID-19. The Los Angeles Times reports that 45 out of 60 Skagit Valley Chorale who gathered at the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church have tested positive. Three have been hospitalized and two have died. No one at the practice had symptoms and most avoided contact with others, but the act of singing could have dispersed virus-containing droplets into the air they breathed.

Rammstein’s frontman Till Lindemann has tested negative for the coronavirus - contrary to earlier reports that he had tested positive for the virus.

On Friday March 27 it had been reported that the German rocker had tested positive after being admitted to a Berlin hospital with a high fever.

Concern grew because he had to spend a night in an intensive care unit.
