I think...you're oversimplifying here. Or we have to take a moment to recalibrate some basic facts?

The basic facts should be that this forum has gone through a number of community upsets, or "meltdowns", in the past year or so. Most notably with members of the Asian community, the Trans community, and the Asexual (aka "Ace") community. We can't (and don't need to) scrub through the entire timeline and post histories of these events. Let's just take a high-level overview here.

I'm not being exhaustive here, but for example: AsianEra was experiencing a lot of racism from users that was going unanswered, and then had a disappointing and unproductive meeting about it with staff. TransEra had a lot of documented reasons to ask the site to disallow promotional threads for Cyberpunk 2077, and site staff ultimately ignored them over a malicious actor. AceEra had something come up via a complaint about a moderator's phobic behavior, which was never really resolved.

It's clear to me that these upsets came up for pretty different reasons.

Again, I really want to stress, I'm providing these links as a plain reminder that these things happened. I'm not here to relitigate them, nor to be the historian of them (I would reserve that for the community members involved), or to go down a rabbit hole. The point is, it's readily apparent that communities of users went through some stuff, and the fallout on them is real - it's not just troublemakers looking for internet points.
 
These incidents didn't become racist or phobic the moment when the site banned a minority community member. In reality they were always about race or gender or sexuality. They came up in response to something already eminently happening on the site. The lack of response, the lack of comprehensive policy or commitment, can play accomplice and be as damaging as banning a bunch of people when shit hits the fan.

The bitter pill we all have to swallow from time to time is that we sometimes do things with an unintentional bias or ignorance that ends up hurting somebody. We're gonna get called out on it, maybe even in really aggressive ways that don't seem 'fair'. I have personally been there, and it was shocking and hurtful. But the call out can't be worse than the thing itself. Even if it wasn't intentional, the pain was real to them. It's on me to understand what went wrong. If we're lucky, we get the opportunity to apologize and try to make amends.

That's not what I see when the line gets drawn at words we need to use to call attention to bad behavior.


Anyway.

I want to clear the air about something - I have been a huge critic of the forum, basically since we all moved here. And Hecht himself has heard it from me since 2017, which must make me a giant pain in the ass. I don't want the things I have to say to fall on deaf ears, or to go into a mental space reserved for "people who think I'm Hitler" . I don't think you're monsters. I don't even think you're bad people. I have liked a number of you, if I've known you through some corner of the site. It's regretful that this is where we're at. It's just frustrating to see where this particular train of decisions, made by the aggregate of the site, ends up every time, which is to say "we have to save face, don't give them an inch" instead of owning up to mistakes that end up damaging communities here.

Criticism isn't the problem. Members like oni-link, deepFlaw, and Kyuuji provide lots of it, much of which I've personally taken back to staff. Indeed, we constantly do that, bringing posts to each other's attention or bringing up a flaws that you guys spot when they're found. We have weekly meetings where we go over this stuff. Actual criticism isn't going into the void.

But let's not act like staff attacks don't occur alongside the criticism. Let's not act like only good-faith members peruse these boards, whether they be long-term members or trolls. Let's not act like even some of the long-term members don't have rap sheets for all sorts of vitriolic shit, not just to staffers, but to other members, sometimes in situations where they've crossed blatant lines. Criticism and heat go hand-in-hand as an inevitability of Internet anonymity, but our fault was in never separating the wheat from the chaff by diligently maintaining the TOS when these events occurred, for fear that doing so would be construed as tone-policing and making the situations worse. I said it in my longer post, and I'll say it again: We're not fair game for any and all manner of written abuse anymore. That shit stops.

But what I also want to get to specifically is your last sentence, this idea that all we do is hunker down and circle the wagons. Certainly that behavior has happened. But there isn't a single instance you mentioned where multiple staff members haven't apologized for it. I know, because I've done a shitload of apologizing. There isn't a single instance that you mentioned that hasn't been followed by policy proposals, implementations, and changes to forum function and staff code of conduct. And ultimately a few of these instances have resulted in folks resigning or being taken off the team altogether. We have had meetings on Discord. We've had meetings on the site itself. We've had follow-ups to those meetings. We've redone one of the meetings because members were upset with how it was conducted.

Now, we may not have done all or exactly what you (the general you, not you specifically) have wanted us to do in the wake of these issues. Like, we get a shitload of calls for mass resignations or complete wipes of every affected member's records, which we're not going to do (and we're not obligated to do either; just because someone says "no" to you doesn't mean they're not listening.) This is really big question mark here, and it's something I continually ask. What specifically do you want us to do? Apologize? We've done that. Acknowledge the specific mistakes of individual flare-ups? We've done that. Discuss things with you; many staffers have through various means and channels. Implement new rules, procedures, and tech? We've done that. So the idea that we never own up to mistakes, never try to change things, never try to help, is a lie. Straight up. It is a lie, and it's a narrative we're also not going to take anymore.

But that doesn't mean we are shutting down input, and it doesn't mean we're throwing our hands up, because staff can simultaneously work to the betterment of the site without being railroaded simply by the very toll this shit takes. Indeed, I can easily look at a list of not just technological implementations but actual events for fun that haven't gotten off the ground because people don't have the mental energy to spend actually working on them and tending to these fires.

Ultimately, a lot of you have been right about something: We are the ones with the power here. So we're going to use it to simultaneously provide a better working environment for ourselves, and that means adhering to firm lines of conduct regardless of a member's status or their personal identity. Certain behaviors and sentiments will not be as tolerated as much as they once were. If this is a deal-breaker for you or anyone else, so be it. But again, I ain't a Magical Negro. New year, no more bullshit. So with all of that said, I ask you, yes you now Rover, what would you like staff to do regarding this latest instance, and what would you like us to do in the future so this is less likely to occur again?

People say 'expensive' but it's really about good cable management and making it look as minimalistic as possible and sparingly placing some abstract art objects and plants.
I mean, there's nothing expensive about a bunch of Ikea shelves and the same PC/Console gear most core gamers have.
99% of those 'expensive' looking set-ups are really all about presentation and living in a modern building with a new kitchen, sliding doors and freshly painted walls.

Now people that have renovated their basement with a mini bar and projectors, that gets a bit more on the expensive side and the guy that posted after Tabris with the Studio Ghibli stuff.
That's an expensive non-convential interior design with a marble floor that costs a pretty penny but that has little to do with the actual 'gaming' side of things.
He's just posting pretty pictures of his interior, that's not a gaming set-up. 

Yeah Tabris lives in downtown Vancouver. I'm sure I know the exact building as a friend has a similar view and shes also in a newly refurbished apartment with new floors and a paint job. The difference is her apartment looks like a place someone lives in.

Most of these types of Van apartments have no personality at all. Which is great for making them look so clean and minimalist. And perfect for making them look like style magazine wank dens, to types who like to push a certain image.

Tabris used to live in the same building as me. Same deal, fairly modern building with amazing views of the city. It does look impressive but there are definitely trade offs.

the ending here deletes your save file, so you can’t go back and do anything. My guess is this allows for people to beat the game if/when servers go offline, even though I’m pretty sure the game “fakes” the online component a bit.
