Maybe out there, but it's quite weird after not giving a shit about physical ethernet on hardware for years (well decades practically) Nintendo now goes out of their way to add one to the new Switch OLED dock. It just seems odd because they really haven't cared about iffy internet performance itself for a long time, so what's prompting this change?

This is just my suspicion but hear me out ... Nintendo's sudden interest in having a physical ethernet port is because they forsee a lot of streaming titles coming to Switch. I'll go even further and guess they themselves may be readying a premium tier of Nintendo Online service where you get a bundle of 3rd party games (streaming) that aren't possible to run on the Switch otherwise and you get NES/SNES/maybe N64/GCN type content too for a higher price point for say $7.99-$9.99/month.

I suspect Microsoft came to Nintendo and pitched xCloud on Switch and Nintendo's internal response was "why the fuck would we let someone else have a service on our system, we could just call Capcom/Square-Enix/Ubisoft etc. and have them supply a few games ala carte under our own service and keep the profit for ourselves. If anyone is making money off streaming on our platform it should be us". Currently the Nintendo Online service is so barebones that it would laughable for Nintendo to even try charging more than what they do, but if they were to offer a premium tier with streaming games like Resident Evil 2/3/7 and Final Fantasy XV/VIIR for example ... all of the sudden a premium tier NSO doesn't look so bad.

They've been letting the streaming company Ubitus port over games like Control and Hitman 3 now and I think these projects are tests that Nintendo is watching to see if Ubitus can provide a good experience.

Possible sure, but I don't think Nintendo randomly makes hardware changes like this. I also think it's rather curious that Ubitus, which has been doing streaming on Nintendo platforms in Japan since like 6-8 years ago just now randomly begins offering streaming titles in the broader US and Europe and we have a Switch dock with ethernet as the standard defacto soon there after.

The same way Nintendo looked at other companies and went "hey everyone else is making money off paid online and DLC and smartphone apps, we should just do our own and make off that" ... they may view streaming the same way. If MS is going to have a service, and Sony, and Google, and Amazon too, hey why shouldn't Nintendo wet their beak too.

My guess would be like this

Nintendo Switch Online Basic Plan - $2/month, you just get NES/SNES/Tetris 99 type stuff, maybe they'll add some GB/GBA content.

Nintendo Switch Online Premium - $7.99/month, you get all the NES/SNES stuff + certain rotating (not all) N64, GameCube, Wii games. In addition you get access to a small collection of streaming Switch titles done by Ubitus. Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 3 Remake, FFXV, old Assassin's Creed, Control, that sort of thing, these titles rotate/change out.

And I hate to say it, but I would probably bite on the premium service.
