You have to be either a big fucking idiot or super ignorant on how America works if you want the 1st amendment repealed.  If you come at it from a "we need hate speech laws" perspective, you're not getting the votes needed to do it in any of the entities needed to repeal/add an amendment unless some CRAZY shift in the views of the electorate happens (and Bernie winning ain't going to do shit about that).  So that just leaves you with hoping it becomes a bipartisan issue.  If it becomes a bipartisan issue, that means a far right party would see it as politically useful to repeal.  In that case, you're not getting shit that will protect marginalized groups and more likely to get hate speech laws that specifically protect the majority or laws making it impossible to criticize the government.  These idiots need to stop comparing America to Canada or Germany because it's not even close to the same thing.

as such historically the collection bought from lord elgin says just as much about the past and how it relates to the present in their current location as they would in athens - they are an artifact of how victorian britain sought credibility for their colonial dominance in the perceived logic and technocratic rule of ancient athens. as important to the creation of an enlightenment view of what western european civilisation is and meant and it’s supposed rightful dominance over the globe as the music of beethoven.

i’m in favour of lending them out regularly for global exhibitions, including in athens, and i don’t think they are exclusively british either, these works have many different meanings. i just hate the propaganda about them.

Happy Friday everyone

So, didn't happen today, but last weekend. Finally getting around to really processing it all and I guess trying to deal with it.

Went out for drinks with my girlfriend and met up with my younger cousin at the bar. We'd all hung out once before and had a great time. My cousin invited a couple of her friends to the bar too; we did some barhopping. I got shitfaced pretty unintentionally (The last bar was, I swear, not putting any mixers in my cocktails, they were straight alcohol). So anyway we're about to leave and my cousin's friends are trying to get her home, because she's shitfaced too. Well, my gf was our DD so we offered to let her stay in our spare room. Everyone was cool with that because who's safer than family, right?

Wrong. We get home and (I had to piece together some of this later because I blacked out for most of it) apparently initially everything was cool. My cousin went to the spare room and my gf got her situated. The problems started a little later when I, in my infinite wisdom, decided to walk straight out of my bedroom with my girlfriend in it, and into my cousin's room. I don't particularly remember much except for two details which I guess are not important to the story. Well, okay so one might be. I remember her giving me a very enthusiastic BJ, which, as you can imagine, makes a lot of noise. Apparently after a while my gf came out of the room wondering where I was because I just fucking disappeared. She didn't barge into the room or anything, but she heard the noises which is pretty fucking obvious. So at that point, she left. Like, me. She left me, and I don't blame her.

Anyway that means I wake up the next morning, having blacked out, oblivious that my gf was gone already, but I'm fucking naked next to my naked cousin. There's cum all over the bed where her face was, she didn't even sleep with a pillow. There's obviously no hiding this but I'm still half-drunk and I went to try to go sneak back into my room, which I found empty. So yeah.

I haven't heard from my gf all week, and I'm sure we're done, and I don't blame her. All I can hope for now is that this shit doesn't get out to my family, because I would probably implode. No, my cousin and I are not going to start hooking up regularly. It's actually super awkward and she has hardly said a word to me either. Again, I don't blame her.

Rather than a bonsai, I liken REEEsetera to something more like the old German ideal of a perfect race of humans. If you ostracise all of the subhuman filth (like Republicans, Bernie supporters, straight white men and terfs) and eventually remove them from society (using a variety of means such as banning, dogpiling, public cancelling and liberal use of guillotines and gas chambers) then you will eventually end up with only the "good people" left.

It's not as if Russia wants Sanders to get elected. They obviously see him as the weakest candidate to face off trump. They ultimately intend for trump to win.

honestly, it'd depend on the nature of the leak. completely hypothetical -- if it just confirmed bloomberg said more of the same things he's already known to have said? absolutely delay. we're talking hours here. the nevada caucuses will be over in under 18 hours. if it was something much more severe, like he sexually assaulted someone or worse? that would be important information for the public to hear.

that's a large part of why this russian news is so inappropriate to drop right now. it's something everyone should already know. except the timing and nature of the article portray it as a much more severe and much more negative topic than it otherwise should be. it's completely unethical.

I don't see how Russian bots pretending to be Bernie supporters harassing people online "helps" his campaign at all. It seems like it's actually hurting him given the comments being cited this week about people being turned off by his supporters' behavior. If Russia is amplifying the appearance of such behavior then they likely aren't trying to help him. They are just trying to sow division, confusion, distrust, anger, and general chaos in our democracy.

Absolutely. Sanders riling up supporters against phony boogeymen is very Trumpish. Continuing to pick fights with the party when you are on your way to being the head of the party is very Trumpish. Bernie needs to be better than that. He's not the fucking underdog, act like you are the frontrunner. The establishment isn't against him, a major reason Iowa was a fucking disaster is because they changed the rules for him.

Hopefully Virginia gets polled again before Super Tuesday. Sanders keeps just showing his ass in a way that makes me want to not vote for him, but he's neck and neck with Bloomberg per that pre-debate poll so I have to be committed to him for the moment.

Is it really a boogeyman when MSNBC, a supposedly moderate network, is comparing Bernie supporters to brownshirts, how he's going to put Chris Matthews against the wall when the revolution comes and treating him like Voldermort during the NH Primaries. Or when Bloomberg is telling all moderates to clear the field so they stop siphoning votes he needs to beat Sanders. Or when Pete Buttigieg is telling Bloomberg to pull out so he, the candidate with the most delegates right now, can stop Sanders from getting an insurmountable lead.

You ever hear white guys talk about white women who've been with a black man? As if she's "spoiled meat".

Thankfully, I have not encountered that much beyond some high school era bullshit, and even then it was highly limited and phrased as "jokes". My girlfriend is white, but grew up, as I did, in a largely black neighborhood. Unlike me, almost all of her friends were mixed race, meaning that there was little stigma around mixed-race relationships. While my friend group was largely white (though often female/gay), I've gotten lucky to choose a group that is weirdly anti-racist; the women, I expect that of, but I've been heartened to hear my male relations, especially as I'm the only man I know with higher education, excoriate anything resembling racism. Some of the guys can use crude language about LGBT issues, but it's a very 90s form of acceptance but not necessarily getting the terminology down. One great thing to see has been just how accepting my students of color are regarding that; I chalk it up to age, but they fucking get it.

The one exception is one of my most educated friends, a white woman, recently make some TERFY comments that I called out. She's pretty progressive on class and women's rights, but has some real blind spots that have gotten a bit....off, in recent years, regarding transgender issues. I don't know why that is, but I've slowly noticed it.
