i'm in the "bought too many consoles" camp as well so i can't judge there. bought and sold a ps4, got three xboxen (og used, traded in for an s, traded in s for an x) and got a switch.

the iteration of consoles made it a bit "easier" to get multiples over the gen, which is not something i normally do. i'm in no rush for next gen though, the x1x and pc take care of almost everything i'd want to play plus switch for nintendo first party.

I'm mostly surprised by the figure because of the popularity of the fortnightly "costs of PC vs console gaming" threads that rattle on for 20 or 30 pages, with people setting asinine PC pricing tasks, or online sub costs, or whatever. I mean two thirds or them are in the hole for 3 consoles, which has gotta be like $700, so who gives a fuck at that point

I've stuck with 1-2 consoles per gen max. Actually I'm pretty sure the only time I bought two was PS2 + DC.

Couldn't care less about "updated" versions, which I'm guessing factors in a lot for those folks with insane numbers of consoles bought.

I bought a PS4, sold that to a friend/former roommate along with a TV because I didn't want to move it when I was moving out. Another base PS4 because it was on sale, and a Switch when it launched. If a Switch Pro is a real thing, I'll buy that as well.

I will also readily admit that if Xbox Series X boots Windows, I'll get that too because then it's just a prebuilt desktop PC, and I don't have the space to custom build something right now.
