Okada chasing Tanahashi for years and his legendary bout to finally beat the Ace of New Japan and become an unstoppable champion and the face of the company is some of the best storytelling ever. Naito's journey to be the new ace and losing to Okada changing him into this Nihilistic super asshole and eventually forming a group meant to destroy everything in New Japan including him earning belts just to destroy them and everyone trying to rally up against him was incredible. Kenny Omega's Journey of rising up with his best friend Kota Ibushi only to grow jealous of his success and forge a new path in Bullet Club eventually taking it over but going to a very dark place was great. He chased Okada for ages but would come up short. He began in fighting inside Bullet Club and was more and more chaotic until he rediscovered his friend Kota who he pushed away from jealousy. After that he surmounted the impossible task that was beating an unstoppable Okada in his prime and became the face of New Japan.

And thats just New Japan story telling moments from the past few decades. There were tons and tons and tons of smaller stories told within not only that few of equal worth but outside of it. Hell AEW isn't a year old yet and have you seen any of Cody's storytelling with his brother or Jericho? My god the brother vs brother match and the buildup to his bout with Jericho was some of the best storytelling in decades!

All that and its still excluding stuff that happened elsewhere like in Ring of Honor when Samoa Joe became an unstoppable monster champion with a 2 year title reign scarier than Goldberg because he wasn't squash matching he was just brutally destroying folks in matches where he'd take Mick Foley levels of damage and still do offense that was all power moves, strong style strikes and submissions that'd brutally break folks down.

Even Lucha Underground which was super carny shit had the incredible first seasons that had Pentagon Jr rising up, breaking arms and being a monster of violence and neat things like Matanza being built up as a monster the owner kept to inflict upon them all as a sadist. Carny as it was the early seasons and the owner worshipping violence and using the fed as almost his cult offering to it was great. The Gift of the Gods belt buildup was better than the final match obviously but I'd never seen a title so mysteriously and awesomely built up with folks having to agree to ridiculous matches to earn a disc for an unknown reason and in the end each medallion holder had in fact earned a spot to participate for a title called The Gift of the Gods where you placed your medallion upon the plates of the belt to fully form the title and once it was whole again it demanded a victor be found to claim it. Fucking rad way to build up a bracket for a belt IMO. Too bad they just threw em all in the ring at once. Should've been a buildup for spots in a tourney but fuck that build up and belt looked rad!

Or when Bullet Club first hit big with AJ Styles after Devitt (Fin Balor) formed it and left New Japan and Bullet Club began invading EVERY FED. Ring of Honor, a shitload of european places, even mexico were not safe from them...and they were adding members in those feds. They could show up anywhere, anytime, and they'd straight NWO style raid your matches and company and leave them in ruin. If they showed up someone there was a new member and it meant at any given time that fed would suddenly have a run in of top draws on any given night. It lead to a worldwide increase in sales and interest because you never knew if someone would show up. My god when Marty Scurll joined and Adam Cole tried to infiltrate were nuts.

You need to branch out. Everything is streamable now. Everything not in english is generally told in the ring not in promo anyhow so you dont even need to know what is said because the emotion is in every scream from an announcer and the story is all in the ring from how they react. Its incredible how well its done in NJPW and even Mexico with some stories.
