We have fighting games developers, some responsible for the best FG netcodes in the industry(KI, SG, NRS fighters) decrying the use of wifi, and then we have random posters anecdotes about how wifi works fine, I'm struggling to find who to believe here.

You don't even have to drill holes if you don't want to or aren't allowed to do that to the wall- just get a super-long Ethernet cable and run it from the modem to whatever.  You can use d-wings to keep the cable along the wall and go around doorways.  I did this in one room and the cable is flush with the crown molding- barely noticeable and didn't cost much at all.

We did also have a professional come in and split the cable so that we have ethernet ports in two rooms.  Wasn't cheap, but is line with home renovation costs.  But that's different since we needed someone to run the cables through the ceiling and not have it look like shit.

yeah i have the benefit of doing this stuff at work so i was able to set up wall jacks in the main rooms of my first house. but like you said even if not, there's plenty of cheap/simple ways to get it done. at my current place i went full lazy and just got powerline adapters.
