One of the coolest aspects of the ST is the meta-story it was telling. The subtext of the story was that it was the story of the Star Wars fandom. Rey is metatextually a star wars fangirl who is meeting her space fantasy superheroes, Kylo Ren is metatextually the toxic fanboy who took all the wrong lessons because he thought Vader was cool, and the plot is effectively repeating the broad plot points of the first trilogy, where even anticillary characters are twists and knock offs of old SW characters. Hux is Tarkin adjacent, Snoke is Emperor adjacent, etc.

The Casino plotline where DJ reveals there are ultra-rich people/companies supplying both the Resistance and the First Order with ships and weapons explains WHY this is happening. Diegetically, it's just capitalism at work, profiteering of the suffering of others. To them, it doesn't matter who wins, the war is simply the vehicle from which they make money and get to live their life of wealth and glamour, which is why Rose finds Canto Bights opulence disgusting. A military industrial complex at work. But metatextually, Canto Bight is a stand in for Disney itself. The reason the new movies are just faux-Empire vs faux-Rebellion again is because Disney knows that plays to the audience's nostalgia and it exploits that, artificially manufacturing this conflict that shouldn't exist anymore in order to repackage the OT Star Wars to sell to us again. Canto Bight reveals, in a sense, the true villains of the story, who propagate the conflict destroys lives for profit. And I think this is valuable because it is reflective of current real life. The reason, after all, corperations like Youtube is so reluctant to ban the numerous alt-right, profascist scumbags isn't (necessarily) because they agree with them (though they very well might), but because fascist or not, shitlords like Steven Crowder make them money. So, because democracy fighting against fascism is profitable for them, the Canto Bightians keep that conflict going on both sides, not caring about the suffering they cause as a result of that war.

And this, imo, was a possible direction that the story could have taken in Episide 9. Finn, having reunited with Rey, tells her that the people supplying the Resistance are the same people who are supplying the FO. If they simply defeat Kylo Ren and the FO, re-establish democracy, it will last for a while, but then the ultrawealthy will simply fund the next generation of fascists and restart the war all over again. So, Rey and Finn have to work together to not just defeat Kylo Ren and the FO, but then also dismantle the system that keeps this conflict endlessly going. Where Episode 7 fully tried to replicate the OT as much as possible, and Episode 8 replicated but then subverted or criticized the repeating patterns, Episode 9 could have fully broken away from the cycle.

But that would have to mean creating something that is not a simple Evil Empire vs Good Resistance type conflict, which might put it beyond JJ Abram's abilities, and I can't help but feel Disney might have some objections over being the metatextual villains of the story they're bankrolling where their media empire is dismantled, so it's a bit of a pipe dream for multiple reasons.
