The entirety of FFVII.

FFVIII demo of Dollet mission.

The first time my friend and I played FFX. We got the demo and our eyes nearly fell out of our sockets.

First time I saw MGS. September 1998 OPM with WWF Warzone demo on the disc. It was a trailer and I HAD TO HAVE IT. Playing the demo months later via Pizza Hut demo confirmed that I had to have it.

Playing Sonic 1 the first time. The first game I got for the first system I owned. It came bundled. It was Christmas. My aunt announced she was pregnant. I don't remember anything about that day except Genesis and Sonic.

Seeing 3D gaming for the first time ever. I couldn't fucking believe it. A PlayStation kiosk with Jumping Flash and that ESPN X-Treme Game. The hype and transition to 3D was THE most exciting era to be a gamer. There was nothing like it. Literally over night, within two years the entire industry changed. We went from playing exclusively side scrollers to entire new genres like survival horror and were exploring crazy 3D worlds. Nintendo went from top dog to PlayStation. The fact something like X-Men children of the Atom or Panzer Dragoon was even possible. Holy shit. I'm convinced I'll never see a more exciting time to game in my lifetime unless they somehow manage to make some thing you're inserted into the game. Ask any person my age (33+) what the first 3D game they ever played was. They will all remember the exact moment.

The first time I played Mario 3. Rented it with my uncle. The music, the graphics, the gameplay. I had played 1 for so long. I had never seen a game sequel step it up in that manner just in terms of sheer content. Mario 3 felt like a game that didn't even belong on the same system as Mario 1.

The first time I ever saw Street Fighter II in arcades. Fighting out and mastering how to do a hadouken.

(and all the other drop sounds)

(it should be absolute cringe, but it just works)

The man that wanted to upturn the established order and help the every day common people becomes king. He gains everything, and yet loses everything. His sister, his best friend branded a heretic. He was a false hero, and a false king. But he made life better for the common people, the People's King.

He kills the woman he loves after she tries to murder him.

Ramza loses everything. His own brothers disown him. He's branded heretic and saves the land despite the cost. A man that lost everything than what truly matters: his dignity. He dies a man who has everything despite how the record tells it.

This youtube comment perfectly summarizes his beautiful, tragic story.

Quote
Ramza Beoulve: He saved the world and didn't get a "thank you" from anyone. Instead he was branded as a heretic, his brothers disowned him, his best friend took credit for all of his actions and he didn't even get a proper burial or funeral. It's easy to do the right thing when adulation, fanfare and "getting the girl" are associated with it. It's much less easy to do the right thing when there are no rewards involved, people will spit at your feet rather than thank you and you're forced to sacrifice everything except your principles.

Ramza wasn't the most powerful or handsome of the FF protagonists. He didn't have a cool airship, he didn't have a unique weapon or a fancy hair color. He wasn't involved in a romantic love story and he doesn't get a glorious ceremony at the conclusion of the game. He didn't have any prolonged inner conflict or mysterious backstory. He was just a normal guy in way over his head that wouldn't compromise his principles no matter how chaotic things got.

That is what makes Ramza my favorite protagonist of any RPG ever made.

But good news! The true history has been recorded and Ramza's name is allowed to brace the sunlight once more centuries later.

GOAT.

Both of them are good, tbh. But PE2's opening sets up for something that should've been more. I feel the whole lab section was a bit wasted.

A few powered by Flipper to to start with

When the Piano kicks in

When Ganondorf gets personal (and the scene where he talks about the wind after)

When Leon reloads his sniper for the first time

When you land and start walking on the first Galaxy

When you land and start walking on the first Galaxy
(Image removed from quote.)

I couldn't pick one from Galaxy (too many), but yeah, even though I had seen this in the E3 demo months before, having the freedom to do it myself and see it on my own TV blew my fucking mind. Felt like a generational leap forward for 3D platformers for the first time since Mario 64, and (IMO at the time) validated Nintendo's decision to eschew horsepower. If they can make Galaxy on a souped-up GameCube, what's the problem? It's like complaining the Mona Lisa isn't a hologram or something.

2:50 onward. Maybe my favorite co-op moment ever? Me and my friend were playing it couch co-op and were stuck for a while. Finally it clicked for me though I wasn't sure if I was actually correct cause I was like "well I think we will smash into each other to land on the platform, right?"

We pull it off and both of us just stand up from the couch and started to laugh. One of the most wholesome experiences ever.

--------

RE4 - The village where shit gets real, aka introduction of chainsaw man (which you can actually never trigger if you are kewl  8))

Flower - Final chapter (not the credits chapter). The whole coexistence of nature and city.  :'( . God bless Thatgamecompany

Super Mario Galaxy - Gusty Gardens when the music kicks in. It's not even one of my favorite levels in the game, but it immediately comes to mind.

KOTOR - Without spoiling things Aerith style. Uh, it's essentially "no John. You are the demons". I was young so this blew my little innocent mind.

Persona 3 - final boss. I can't remember what the actual situation was, but all my party was dead and my MC kept trading blows back and forth, but it was a stalemate cause I always had to heal due to poisoning or something. So I was like "well I take the risk and hopefully land the deathblow or I don't hit the deathblow and I'll die from poisoning." Things worked out in my favor which if anyone knows that is a long ass boss fight haha. So I was all "babybabybabybabybaby". Then the final cutscene  :'(. Fantastic game. I love my P3 bros and gals.

MGS 3 - Boss vs Big Boss. Big Boss vs the sniper.  :lawd

MGS 1 - Solid Snake vs. Gray Fox "hurt me moar". Solid Snake vs Psycho Mantis (I can move your controller. Switching controller ports.  Kojima you son of a bitch haha)

Halo 1 - Landing on Halo and then getting to experience that vast open level

I Wanna Be The Guy - actually defeating the guy. Holy fuck that took me nearly a decade and two laptops.

TLoZ Breath of the Wild - Eventide Island

Mafia 1 - I only played this in the original dub. Has some fantastic voice acting. Hilarious lines. There is one where Don Salieri is angry that some small time idiots were making a mess in his part of the town. This would be prior to the mission where you and your usual goofball friend are supposed to go rough up some of these idiots, but things get out of hand when they bring out guns. Anyways. Don has phenomenal lines in the OG dub prior to that mission.

Max Payne 3 - Airport when THEE Health song kicks in. You know the one. "Tears"

Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition - My friend had this on the Genesis. I beat the game with Blanka and a cutscene appeared. Not a big deal today of course, but it blew my little mind back then. I felt sad and happy for him.

TES Oblivion - firs time leaving the dungeon and realizing I would be able to explore everything I saw. It's so ugly now, but back then I had a whoa moment.

Resident Evil 5 - Chris punches a rock. Me and my firend were playing this couch co-op. Both of us started laughing hard when this was transpiring.

Demon's Souls - Maiden Astraea. God everything about this. The lead up to knowing bits and pieces to her story. The rotten shithole where she exists. Her protector Garl Vinland. To the the "Fine. Take your precious Demon Soul." Holy shit. After this level I was a DS believer. Amazing. Absolutely blown away.

 :'( :'( :'(

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 - Just going over to my friends house to play it constantly on his PS1.

So here I am
growing older all the time
looking older all the time
feeling younger in my mind

Good times. Fuck, best times probably.

edit:
CoD4 Modern Warfare - Ghillie suit and protecting my mate at the ferris wheel in Chernobyl. Loved that mission.

The first notes of a lot of things for me can trigger this. Like the first level of Doom is a good example.

To use an example, I could pause two seconds into this and it's like the rest is ready to go in my brain:

Hitler’s head exploding at the end of Bionic Commando.

Games back then didn’t really have end game content. You might get one graphic and rolling text, but nothing like you expect today. So to have that be the ending of a pretty decent, challenging game was like a hit of crack. I became addicted to finishing all the games to see if any other nuggets were buried at the end.

For me specifically, it was Zero's entrance later in this level (with that rockin' chip-guitar intro) and later on (spoilers) Zero's sacrifice.

I've been trying to get into FFT, but I just hasn't clicked yet.  Tried it back on PS1.. And now recently trying it on my phone.  I love Shining Force series and Tactics Ogre: LUCT, but FFT is not dropping those vibes for me... gonna keep trying at different times.

Not sure... A combination of things I think.. The music seems horribly repetitive and uninspiring, and the art style.. albeit good, it's a bit too 'cute' to take as serious as the story seems to be.

Downloading it again in my phone... Now that I think about it, I should maybe consider getting the PS1 version instead due to save states..  :thinking

That was not the response I expected.  I’ve always taken it for granted that people consider the soundtrack a standout of the generation (I know it’s one of my personal favorites).

Different strokes I guess.

Oh no. Please don't do the mobile port. The touch controls are horrible.

Just download PPSSPP to your phone, get the PSP port and patch it with the slowdown fix.
