seeing like a state was the book that, if radicalize is the wrong word, definitely awoke me from my normie slumbers. the upshot is that states -or at least modern ones- operate with an implicit logic, focused around making legible discreet units of governance, and then constructing some kind of administrative order for the purposes of surveillance and manipulation. (sometimes one activity performs both goals.) the point isn’t that surnames were rarer before the rise of the modern state (though i think that’s true), it’s that surnames and full names become metamorphosed into tools readily available for states to use when policing, taxing or conscripting. the argument is that a ‘government name’ as a fixed, rigid designator of a person isn’t really conceivable outside of modern, european/colonial-inspired polities. the roman nomina system -all three units of which are really just different family names, it’s rare to see a truly unique, personal name of a roman citizen- doesn’t really give the lie to this argument: honorifics like ‘Africanus’ or designators like ‘Scaevola’ were treated virtually on par with all the other elements of a roman name; citizens acceded to a name upon adulthood. these names weren’t fixed indices referable, and this is the point, to a state structure and its method of recognizing people. and this recognition is, again, in service to the state’s fashioning a certain public order
