AFAICS the only way the US could have withdrawn completely 'drama free' would have been formal surrender and complete capitulation to the Taliban, recognition of their authority at an international level and an ongoing series of reparations and trade / infrastructure funding / weapons deals in return for an amnesty for their allies and a staggered withdrawl.

Afghan refugees were being crammed into overloaded Air Force planes and dozens were immolated by a suicide bomber at an airport checkpoint.

At this point in this mess people are looking for looking for outrage.
