Links Awakening - was pretty good game, but one of the weaker zeldas ive played. Had to consult a guide a few times, which isnt my fave

Nier automata - awesome game, with an excellent and unique story. I did get a little tired of the gameplay loop at the end, and the enemy variety is its weakest point

I haven't played much this year, besides my daily dose of MTG: Arena. Maybe I'll play more once that PS5 arrives.

Jan 9 - Picross S5 (NSW)

Cyberpunk 2077- right now this feels like a solid 8-8.5 game, and I'm sure when all is said and done it will be a 9ish. Not as good as Witcher 3 but in the words of Larry David, "pretty, pretty, pretty good." I just wish CDPR would fire whoever is in charge of menus and UI in their games, because it's universally trash with a lot of the same problems across their games

Mario 64 - The Switch version has some really twitchy controls that make some stars a huge pain in the ass. Wasted the better part of an afternoon getting the 6th star and 100 coin star on Rainbow Ride. This is a guy who got all stars on the DS remake with a D pad without much issue. Nintendo needed to do a better job here.

Mario Galaxy - I still think the Galaxy games are the best mainline Mario games and it was confirmed here. Controls are much better here and it could be because the control stick on the Wii may match the Switch stick more. Fun game still.

Rage 2-A real mediocre game honestly. The actual combat was good, with the guns feeling good. Complete with some guns that have some cool unique functions, but also in the end you have to ask yourself "why don't I just use the assault rifle?". But other than that it just felt like the most generic game of that generation. A PS4/Xbox One era open world game to the core, but without anything to really grab you. The world is mostly empty and not really even cool to look at. Everything feels gamey so there's not really an attempt at immersion or real atmosphere.  There was also so many stat trees and other level up stuff that it becomes pretty well easy to ignore and not care about.

Thanks, you saved me from buying this

Just wrapped up 13 Sentinels, still working on plat. I'm probably not as high on this as most others here. Story was really well designed and intricate, but a bit too convoluted to keep complete track of. I like the actual strat/tower defense game thats here and wish it was more fleshed out. Definitely worth the time and i'm happy that such a weird and original game was made

Who here liked 13 Sentinels besides Weeb Molotov? I thought it was a slog and the whole "RTS" bits were dumb and cheeseable with no sense of difficulty

I'm more surprised that the game is getting this praise... there are much better VNs

But I also agree that it was a little too convoluted for its own good. But it was such a love letter to all the types of fiction that I like that couldn’t help but enjoy it. Also it just look and sounded amazing.

My main problem is that it would explain certain plot points hours after the fact. Meaning it’s possible you forgot whatever they were talking about. As whatever the mechanic that needed to be explained was explained in another route you played hours later.

I still haven't opened my copy. Usually I'd have avoided it for the high school protagonists alone, but Odin Sphere had a pretty good story. And it still has Vanillaware graphics, so. We'll see.

Replayed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and it's still pretty good, but then I immediately picked up KOTOR 2 and maaaaaaan did Obsidian really shit all over Bioware and Bethesda within the span of about 5ish years by making better games than their predecessors with limited time and resources. Granted I'm playing the TSLRCM version with cut shit patched back in but so many little things in the vanilla game (WRITING and choices having impact obviously, but also itemization, crafting, etc) are just so much better than the first one. I still need to play the Outer Worlds I guess.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, or whatever it's called. My wife, daughter and I did the whole thing 3-player co-op and holy shit did it get tense at times. I swear my daughter enjoyed fucking with us and making it harder than it needed to be! This is a team building exercise to improve communication skills. We're gonna do 3D World next as a family, pray for us.  :lol

13 Sentinels was great. What are better VN?

428 Shibuya Scramble is the only pure VN I've ever enjoyed. It's really fantastic.

13 Sentinels was amazing. I wasn't expecting much of anything when the genre was finally revealed, but I liked it a lot. It more than likely helps that I enjoy Super Robot Wars, and the "RTS" sections weren't much different.

Finished Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II with the restored content mod. I guess peak Obsidian was 2004-10ish? The engine is still kinda trash but man the writing is great on this and New Vegas. Which I will not immediately begin replaying, gonna work through some of the shit I started last year and never bothered to finish next.

Sunset Overdrive - played through the last mission. Bugs prevented most of the final cinematic from playing properly. It showed a random portion of the local background instead of expensive mo-cap and facial animation. GOOD GOING. Otherwise a great game.

May mop up a couple easy Achievements before deleting it, but also anxious to move onto another title or two from Ultimate Game Pass before my $1 for 3 months deal runs out.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox-Honestly, one of my favorite recent JRPGS. Say what you will about the graphics and presentation, but the movement and traversal abilities were really fresh feelings for a jrpg. Summoning feelings of Gravity Rush and Crackdown with the movement abilities. Not only that, but the level design was strong and kept the abilities useful. Story had some neat meta twists vibe to it and as always the gameplay is solid.

Bravely Default 2-I'm less positive on this. Yeah, the gameplay is good and the job system feeds into methodical stat thinking. But I mean outside of that it's pretty meh. It's not clever. It does the stupid fake ending crap that seems popular with Japanese games now, but without any real point. The story, world, and characters were very bland. The presentation, art direction, and voice acting all hit the style they are going for, but it's in service of a rather dry atmosphere that really does not excel.

Beat Resident Evil (7) Biohazard just now. Really great game, honestly the creepiest in the series. The first person perspective did a lot to rejuvenate the series. Looking like Village gonna be an attempt to marry this with the action of 4, I kinda feel like it will just end up being more like 4 in first person but imo that's not a bad thing and could end up being an all time great. Gonna power through the DLC this weekend before 8 drops.

Made it through 3+ playthroughs of Resident Evil Village (Standard, Casual to speed run and rack up cheevos to unlock infinite ammo, etc, and then Hardcore) and enjoyed it a whole lot. I think if they want to stick with first person RE games, they should keep them more in the mold of RE7 tho, which ultimately is a better game. Village probably slots in like this for me:

RE4
RE2remake
REmake
RE7
Village

Think I'm gonna finish God of War now and then keep on hacking at the backlog with Horizon Zero Dawn after that. The PS5 is pretty impressive for a console.

Ys VIII-After finishing 9 I finally felt the need to playthrough 8. I liked it, but not as much as 9. Combat and world exploration were still fantastic. As was the whole premise of being stuck on an island. I guess I just missed the traveseal stuff.

Resident Evil VIII-It was ok. Clearly more action-focused than 7. It's just I find the action still to slow and janky for an fps. Also, the story and tone seem out of sync and get weirdly too serious later in the game.

Resident Evil VII-Spurred from my playthrough of 8, I decided to also finally play through this long ago purchased sequel. As far as tone and feel go, I feel this is more consistent and less stupid than 8. The story and stakes always seem to stay focused on this lower scale story of bio terror. The Bakers and Eveline were far more interesting than the gothic Far Cry villains of VIII. Though the action is clearly less exciting than VIII thanks to pretty boring enemies of which there are like 3. I don't know, none of these FPS REs feel like full packages to me.

Finally finished the campaign on Dad of War and the game was pretty dope. I only killed 3 of the Valkyries tho, so I'll go back and kill them all eventually.

I feel like Ragnarok will probably reuse a bunch of assets/locations, and will focus on the realms you didn't go to in the first (Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard, and probably do more in the two that were just minor stopovers in Niflheim and Muspelheim) and I'm largely fine with that.

Resident Evil 5(Xbox Series X)- Yeah it’s bad, worse than I remember. I always use to think it was just worse RE4. So still fun. Maybe in co-op, but outside of co-op, Sheva is just too much of an idiot. She really seems to not be able to act on her own. Many situations where I’m running away, instead of providing any cover fire she must also run with me. Also the inventory system is garbage. So many things to pick up, but with only 18 boxes, you’ll miss so much. But also have to engage with it in an unfun way all the time. This game still looks great, but I did not enjoy my time with it this time.

I'll try and remember what I've clocked lately

Observation - sweeeeet game. As someone who codes up a lot of UIs I could reallly appreciate the UI design in this. Especially the memo wheel where you combine data fragments. Sliiiick stuff. A really innovately designed game as well. Mean slice of hard sci-fi with some wild plot beats.

Hollow Knight ('bad' ending at least. Working towards full completion still) - Has to be in the running for GOAT game. From a technical standpoint the level design and progression is sublime and its also backed up by beautiful art, sound and world building. This may even topple SotN for my favourite game ever spot. Although probably not after thinking about it, as I prefer the artstyle, sound and easier difficulty of SotN. It's also more kitsch which is something I'm into

Maneater - eeeehhh. Quite a novel concept but it was just quite a boring game. Swimming around and eating fish was cool. Any of the action (fighting other sharks, boats) was button mashing jank and just not that satisfying or cool. The sandbox had some neat easter eggs and the narration was very funny at times. The storyline was played way too serious for the subject matter of the game. Would give it 5/10. Easy gamerscore

Metal Slug 3 for Switch. Still my favorite old school 2D action game after all these years.

June 28 edit: Since it’s the last post I’ll just edit here.

Metal Slug 4 (NSW): One of the first SNK games made by Playmore iirc and it got a lot of negative attention when it came out and it’s easy to see why: much easier than the SNK predecessors, shorter, more gimmicky vehicles, enemies not as imaginative, messy in some areas, and it feels like effort really dropped off towards the end. Generally considered the low point in the series and I’d be inclined to agree.
