I don't think the library matches up to SNES yet, but as an overall package I agree.

Blending a handheld with a home console was clearly great decision.

Wii U development continuing to pay dividends.   :rejoice

Now we just need to get us on Switch some Etrian Odyssey’s, Rocket Slimes, and Metroids.

A handheld whose controls fuck themselves because dust is a shitty handheld.

Those drifting Joycons made me miss the WiiU. Until they fix that, the Switch to me is worse than a WiiU.

I mean I like it more than Wii U & Wii

I feel like it had more quality software than GC/N64, but I also feel like those systems had more classic amazing original games. Like F-Zero GX, Baten Kaitos 1/2, Pikimin 1/2, Metroid Prime don’t really have non-port equivalents yet. N64 obviously 3d Zelda/Mario/F-zero.

I probably still like SNES & GC best, but maybe after that for my tastes.

Golf Story (?)
Luigi's Mansion 3
Mario + Rabbids plus the expansion
Paper Mario: The Origami King
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Link's Awakening Remake

Ok these are the only ones that interest me, but these are good Nintendo games probably. In the end its mostly whats best on Nintendo systems anyway. Its worth getting the system for but at this point I might as well wait for the Switch Pro or whatever

As the Bore's Nintendo Co., Ltd Ambassador I would like to clarify that all Nintendo products are in fact 'the best' at the moment they were released.
Superseded only by better Nintendo products.

Because Nintendo will exist eternally not a single Nintendo product can ever be considered the best and thus the brand itself is the only entity that exists in the known and unknown universe that is close to perfection.

What are some of the must own exclusives that arent on the WiiU?
Why must a console be judged by it's exclusives? Judge it by its overall experience.

For a Nintendo system thats mostly what im gonna be interested in tbh

It's a great system.

I doubt it'll top the sheer quality of the SNES or the experimentation of the DS, though. It'll be a solid #3, honestly that's good enough.

By overall experiences, the 3Ds reigns supreme. I’m surprised in how little effort Nintendo is putting in  the user experience and other features for the console on the Switch, their focus seem to be in the Virtual Console service and the dying online Apps.

I think DS had the most creative output but in retrospect a lot of the games suck and I'd never touch them today. It's just way too tech limited and anything 3d on DS is fucking gross. I feel like the Layton games, 999 and Ouendan are some of the only DS games that still hold up.

3DS might've had a softer library in originality but I'm playing DQVIIr 3DS now and enjoying it just fine in terms of the 3d holding up. I also play FF Theaterhythm here and there and it holds up fine.

I think can just admit that every Nintendo system has its charm outside Wii U, which still had a dozen good games, but just too short of lifespan to be interesting.

:goty remembering they once did hardcore games like Fzero GX, Prime, Wave Race and Eternal Darkness plus moneyhats like Resident Evil and Rogue Squadron between all the predictable mascot and pedo weeb content, so the output wouldn't become stale. With the best graphics of the time. Or when a lacklustre DS 1st party output was completely compensated and beyond by an onslought of 3rd party exclusives. But then again, that's why fanboys are the worst judges even for the things they shill. Downplay true classics to hype whatever their chosen company does at the moment.

Using terms like these pretty much invalidates your opinion for me. I'm multiplatform and have been for decades. I don't "shill" for anybody. The Switch is what I've wanted since I got a GameBoy way back when. Nintendo delivered it and I love it.

What are some good 3d ds games that still would hold up today?

I think this is the wrong question you should be asking. The Nintendo DS was mostly made for its hardware. The games don't look nice but I guarantee they're killer. Games like Dragonball Origins and Ninja Gaiden DS are great. Bringing up 3D games no sense because I guarantee the 3d games it does have aren't trying to be 3d console games.

So am I correct in that this is a feeling, and not observational fact? You talk about 3D when a lot of the best games like TWEWY or Ghost Truck aren't even 3d. Nintendo DS is a top 5 system, 3d or not.

Good Lord I love this system.

I do try to mess with DS games from my large DS library occasionally, but outside the Layton stuff and some good 2d stuff like Contra 4 I can't deal with it.

The 3d quality is worse than PS1/N64/Saturn which is like wowowwwww. It's just too damn low tech that I can't enjoy 3d games on DS even on an emulator. Saga 2 in your vids is a good example. Not only is the 3d rough but the framerates are really rough for 3d games.

PSP 3d? Still pretty bad, just about PS1 level where only the best of the best hold up like Metal Gear Ac!d/Peace Walker/God of War games.

Now Vita/3DS? Still pretty ugly but can still enjoy the low poly 3d stuff.

Now 2d games, sure? Although I think the DS screen itself is just too small to enjoy even 2d games anymore. Even the launch 3DS screens feel too small these days. I replaced both my USA and JP 3DS with the XL versions because of that.

Again, emulate.

Go throughout this thread and see the tech evolve. The problem with nds is resolution which emulation entirely fixes.

https://www.neogaf.com/threads/nintendo-ds-games-in-hd.798812/

I vehemently disagree that ds games haven't "aged well" especially regarding graphics - they never looked good, and nobody cared at the time either. I seriously do not care about graphics but I have supplied emulated examples of higher res. graphics since it means so much.

I promise that if you can get past the graphics that the DS has one of the widest sleections of creative output ever made for a system. I sometimes consider it on par or even better than the SNES or PS2 because of the sheer amount of ideas they tried for it. All that in a tiny little system with a drawing app in it. DS fucking owns. Speaking of which, I need a new DS lite.

Tbf its way more fun playing a DS or 3DS game on its original hardware than emulating it on pc imo.

Yeah the game looks like ass but its still a more tactile experience

In any case, Switch has a lot of work to do before it's Nintendo's best system. They have to bring their A game to other key franchises besides Mario and Zelda, for one. On SNES, their best system, Nintendo brought it across their entire library of games from Mario to Metroid. They brought in Rare to make a new Donkey Kong platforming series, made classic RPGs like Mother 2/Earthbound. Switch has some classics but it's mostly BOTW and Mario Odyssey propping everything else up while the third party does most of the work. Much of their releases have been outright Wii U ports. It's a great system, but what, exactly, are its claims to best Nintendo system, in a real way, beyond  fun water cooler chat? Don't get me wrong as the potential is there in order for switch to be the best it needs to show more originality and more quality. Where's Mario Kart 9? Where's a top tier nintendo rpg? Where's Metroid?

A majority of DS essentials have an inoffensive mix of 2D and little 3D anyway. Bowser's Story, all Castlevania, Sonic Rush, 999, Ninja Gaiden (prerendered), Ghost Trick, Contra, Legend of Kage, Tetris, Space Invaders, World Ends With You... I guess Square Enix big IP was one of the outliers and a few others like GTA.

The SNES is an interesting one. Let's look at it from a US/EU perspective how it evolved.
I've tried to compare a random 25 Best SNES Games list with Switch releases. Of course there's some apples and oranges.
For example Contra was the popular hardcore shoot bang thing and now DOOM is.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time >> Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Harvest Moon >> Animal Crossing
Super Mario All-Stars >> Super Mario 3D All Stars
F-Zero >> FAST RMX
Contra III: The Alien Wars >> DOOM Eternal
Secret of Mana >> Dragon Quest XI
Super Mario Kart >> Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
ActRaiser(quintet RPG's) >> Xenoblade Series
Street Fighter II >> ??
Super Castlevania IV >> Dark Souls Remastered
Donkey Kong Country 2 >> Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
NBA Jam >> Splatoon 2
Tetris Attack >> Puyo Puyo Tetris
Super Punch-Out!! >> ARMS
Kirby Super Star >> Super Smash Bros.
Final Fantasy II >> Octopath Traveler
Super Mario RPG >> Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Mega Man X >> Bayonetta 2
EarthBound >> Undertale
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island >> Super Mario Odyssey
Final Fantasy III >> Bravely Default 2
Super Mario World >> Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury
Chrono Trigger >> Fire Emblem: Three Houses
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past >> Breath of the Wild
Super Metroid >> ??

The Switch also has its fair share of quirky and experimental games like the SNES such as Star Fox and Astral Chain.
I would say the Switch is about equal or has just passed the SNES. You have to take into account that the SNES didn't get most of its best games (Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Mario RPG, Super Metroid, DKC2, Harvest Moon) until 1994 - 1997.
The first 2 years of Switch is no contest compared to the SNES. It really depends on what Nintendo's drops in the latter half of the Switch generation and how the pandemic has an impact on that.
If they manage to get out Metroid Prime 4, BOTW2, Bayo 3, Splatoon 3 and drop another Xenoblade, Fire Emblem plus revive F-Zero or Earthbound in some fashion next to the usual Mario Sports and mascot platform games (DK/Yoshi etc.)
SNES will be left in the dust by the end of 2022. And that's not even counting the yet to be released indie or third party games. The big missing pieces at this time are Metroid and fighting games.

Notice how you directly compare a lot of snes exclusives to games like Doom Eternal, DQXI, and Undertale which aren't exclusive to Switch? That's precisely why Switch isn't as good as SNES and also kind of undoes your own argument. Then there's the fact you listed multiple ports like DKCTF and Mario Kart 8 which lowers the your switch list even further. Even more telling is when you compare entire series. You list FE 3H but SNES had three? Four? Fire Emblems? Is 3H as good as FE3? 4?

Switch is a great system but you're grasping at straws putting it on par with the super nintendo and list wars won't solve that. Switch needs far more time to be even able to be in the same discussion as SNES much less the DS but that's my opinion. Thankfully Nintendo agrees and aren't ending the Switch any time soon. With longer development cycles it's pretty hard to take seriously the idea Switch could even possibly be in the same discussion as the Super Nintendo and I don't see why it even needs to be better than the SNES to be a great system.

Like, dark souls remastered is a legit example as to why the switch is on par with the snes? A ten year old game? Lol ok.

If Dark Souls 1 and Doom make you better than SNES, what does that make all those platforms that run them better and also offer a multitude of sequels and genre equivalents? :rogan lol Undertale.

Nintendo isn't where you are going for multiplats as the main attraction, unless they have the best versions like on Gamecube. Or at the very least, not be ten years late.

The Switch just shits all over anything with the name "Wii" in the title and I really like the system, but I don't know if I'd call it the best Nintendo console.  It is their best console released in the past 20 years, IMO.  It's a fantastic platform and I play it way, way more than my PS4.

It is if you want portable versions of these games.

What would make it the GOAT is a unified digital library of all Nintendo exclusives (and some third party games) from NES to Wii-U. This won't happen due to releasing ports for full price makes way too much money.

This is genuinely a problem with Japanese publishers in general though. Konami could've released MGS 1-3 on a hundred different platforms by now, but risk aversion has a death grip on older games being officially supported on more platforms.

So far, Microsoft is the only console manufacturer/publisher that has unified their entire platform.

It is if you want portable versions of these games.

Then a significantly higher portion of these ports needed to be much more current. Excluding single-system-sluts, you don't wait out on games that interest you for a decade in hopes that one day they could come out on a more powerful Gameboy. And even if you were inclined to make your fifth replay of Dark Souls on Switch for a change, in the future you won't remember it as a great Switch game. It will always be a PS360 title.

There's plenty of 'current' ports on the system, too.  The amount of games available for the Switch is not one of its problems.
