I fired up Lost Ark last night and cringed so hard during that character creator. Then, once I made my character I cringed again at the walk animation.

My secret to always winning Tekken 2 was to play as Jun, a female character with a powerful, feminine, cartwheel kick (the boys would rarely pick a female character, unknowingly giving me the advantage). Nowadays, we’re departing from the idea that women who play video games are invading the male territory. Video games have undergone a reputational change, as the extensive benefits of gaming – escapism, a sense of achievement and community, and social connectivity – are becoming more and more apparent.

Gaming has a unique storytelling method that invites people to live out an adventure rather than just observe. Where film and TV create voyeurs, video games create active participants. However, there are still modern depictions of women that uphold an objectifying culture. You’ll find large-chested bikini-clad fantasy women in the Japanese spin-off franchise Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. The backstory of the series is that the female characters of Dead or Alive, a fighting game series, are playing mini-games on a private island resort. It’s largely understood that the series is closer to playable soft porn than to an actually entertaining video game.

Gamespot called out the Dead or Alive developers for having “set the game industry back about 5 years.” But with the latest iteration released in 2019, I’d say it’s set us back even further. Any franchise that uses jiggle physics – a specific feature that makes a woman’s breasts exaggeratedly bounce when she moves – is crossing the line from realistic to creepy.

I guess I've just been ignorant on how many racist Steam games there are on the store. I knew the forums were full of geniuine racists, see all the "censorship" threads or "anti-sjw" threads you see on the forums. I just didn't know Valve was making money off bigotry like this.

If you're ever brave enough to venture into the discussion pages of any game that has a the vaguest hint of a progressive theme, or some kind of representation, etc... you'll notice a lot of vile shit. Check the profiles of the people speaking and you'll likely notice more in their comments section.

I reported a profile a few years ago that had a tonne of super overt racism in the comments: images of swastikas, racism toward Jews, n-word everywhere and it was still untouched months later. I saw another profile like it last week.

They are lenient to this stuff, for whatever reason...

A very explicit reminder that when Hatred was banned on steam for you know, being Hatred not only did Valve revoke that ban but Gabe Newell himself personally issued an apology. Steam is actual garbage in that regard.

When I got an iPhone as a teen there was something very common that I was used to seeing all over the place: broken iPhones.

Probably half of all the iPhones I saw from 2007-2012 were broken. It was just a fact of life. Kids and adults alike had smashed screens, water damage, bent frames, and the horror of using a broken iPhone until your contract was up was a very real phenomenon. The relative ease your iPhone would be destroyed produced a super lucrative business model for really resilient phone cases - an era where big bulky Otterboxes and trendy Lifeproof cases defined the aesthetic of the iPhone just as much as the device itself.

I had one on every iPhone I ever owned and they did a great job at preserving the device. Every iPhone I traded in at the end of its lifecycle was like new. At no point have I ever damaged my iPhone and I always credited the protection afforded by the waterproof, shockproof, drop-proof cases I'd become accustomed to. I became very reliant on these cases because I beat the hell out of my phones. For one of my jobs I worked outside and constantly dropped my phone on dirt and concrete. I had the tendency to eject my phone from my lap accidentally as I stood up out of the car, sending it flying onto the pavement. I'd be balancing my phone on a stack of laundry and drop it down the hardwood stairs of my parents' house. I'd drop my phone in the snow, I'd use my phone in the shower, and as the years went by I became extremely comfortable with not having to be careful with my phone. There was no reason to. In these cases, they were indestructible.

But it is not 2010 anymore. The construction of the iPhone, allegedly, has come a long way. They're innately waterproof now. They're made with stronger glass. They frame won't bend in your pocket anymore. And today in this year of our Luigi 2022 I don't see a lot of bulky armored iPhone cases. At most, people will have a thin little plastic shell that covers the back of the phone. Some don't even use that. Phone cases are not fashionable and a lot of people don't use them.


As a result I am trying to "get with the times." I replaced my resilient all-encapsulating phone case with a regular plastic shell that goes on the back of the device. And... I feel like my phone is so vulnerable. It feels so delicate. I'm afraid to put it in my pocket lest my keys gauge the glass. I'm afraid to drop it in the driveway and crack the screen in half. I hesitated before bringing it in the shower this morning afraid of what would happen. For me, it is still 2010. If I drop my iPhone it will explode and my parents will kill me.

So folks with no cases or minimal cases on your expensive phones - how do you live? Am I making the right decision? Please comfort me in my time of great anxiety. I have never used my phone with a naked screen like this before. It feels like it will melt like chocolate from my fingertips. Maybe I should go back to the armor!

I took a bunch of advice from this thread and have a bunch of different but similarly-styled slim cases on their way to weigh my options.

I also ordered a tempered glass screen protector but I am wondering: do I really need it? There seems to be this enlightened fringe where people claim modern cellphones do not need screen protectors anymore and the compulsion to buy them is all part of the conditioning by Big Screen Protector. How do people feel about that?
