Basically the title. I couldn't apply for Computer Science or Computer Animation, so I went with Public Policy and I feel nothing. "Why am I doing this?" "What's the point?" "I already knew that", are all way too common things I say to myself during my courses and university work. For the past 2 years I haven't learned anything new, everything is stuff I already knew about, because of all the political and history books (and being media literate in general helps) I've read through the years, it doesn't help that the degree in that specialisation is essentially just a piece of toilet paper. I'm 23 and seeing my friends getting their degrees, finding a job in the thing they studied and loving it, makes me feel an emotion of emptiness I can't describe.

I feel I failed in a way I can't describe.
I'm empty inside.
I'm not good at anything.
My degree is garbage.
I think I might have depression.
I'm scared of being homeless.

I'm not sure what response I'm looking for, or what exactly I expect with this, but I came to the conclusion that I should write it down.

Today I was in a class called Political Behavior, which is supposed to examine the relationship between American citizens and the people they elect. Naturally there are a lot of rare circumstances from 2016 that are interesting to examine. However, my professor repeatedly presents these circumstances through republican talking points and conservative frameworks, even though she herself appears to be a moderate democrat in personal opinion.

 It makes me sad that someone in charge of educating new voters is either entirely clueless about our reality or won't take her job seriously because she's too scared of being labeled somehow. And this seems to be a department-wide policy. If you're an educator, and the truth means stupid fuckheads will label you, tell the truth anyway.

Yes, #MeToo is genuine net positive for society, RE. Documenting the actual misfires would actually help cementing this as people can accept when they are wrong and not confuse mob justice as some sort of twisted form of empowerment.

I've been rewatching The Drew Carey Show for some reason and the first season was kind of telling. There's this little arc where Drew decides to make an office memo more palatable by including an image of a caterpillar having non-consensual sex with a french fry, gets sued by a woman in his office, he starts uses a bunch of ethnic pejoratives (all to white ethnic groups though) to make sure that the people he hires can "take a joke", he can't hire a lawyer because they think the first amendment is powerless and he can't win, he can't get a public defender because he's paid too much and thus "has fallen through the cracks in society", then he tries to flirt his way out with the judge during the trial.

It feels like it's mocking cancel culture and #MeToo, but it's doing it ten years before the MeToo movement actually started and twenty before it was popular.

The movement to actively normalize workplace sexual harassment and mock the idea of being considerate to an increasingly diverse workforce has been at work through mainstream media for at least decades.

Since Drew Carey is a wealthy Hollywood white dude who is also an outspoken libertarian, it's the least shocking thing in the world to me to learn that he dedicated an entire episode of his show to the hardships of white men in societal power structures supposedly being unable to act in ways that are at the very least inconsiderate of and at the worst outright predatory towards those of less privileged status.

In later seasons the show turns very cartoonish, and I think at that point it rarely feels like it's got much of a political statement, which I think is how most people might remember it. But then there's a few moments here and there which are pretty nasty. Definitely the worst of the '90s sitcoms I've seen.

There's one episode about internet censorship where Mrs. Louder, who owns the store, insists that the internet should be censored and that no good conservative would argue. That gets her in a fight with Kate, who is trying to impress her but has to stand up for what she believes in, which is that you can be a good conservative and also not believe in censorship. No one brings an opinion which is not outright claimed to be conservative. To settle the debate, Drew brings in celebrity guest star Rush Limbaugh and everyone gushes over him.

In the last system, there's an episode where Drew and his then girlfriend Kellie are starting up their relationship, then Kellie is horrified to discover Drew's politics which are all completely disgusting to her. Drew pretends that he's being influenced by her opinion just to keep having sex, then try just try to ignore the topic, but ultimately Kellie is pressured to give up on the hostility to focus on her relationship because it's more important. I'm not even sure I'd say it's a pro-conservative episode so much as outright bad because Kellie debating Drew's politics makes him sound awful - she tells him that ownership increases gun violence and statistically is more likely to harm the owner and he just says that since half of people owning guns isn't working maybe they should have more, he calls affirmative action unfair and she notes that Drew is in a position of privilege as a white man, they both agree that climate c

Beyond that, there are some throwaway jokes which tend to come up every once in a while which are all various kind of bad. There's sniping at the Clintons, which isn't innately bad since there's things to criticize. A lot of the insults between Drew and Mimi read as transphobic in nature, and it doesn't really stop once they add Steve - a crossdresser who is mostly not played for comedy - is added to the cast. There are also a bunch of times where Drew snarks about the government unfairly targeting the wealthy, which is especially bizarre when so much of the show is about Drew's friends who are stuck in low-paying jobs being pushed around by corrupt wealthy higher-ups.

Sad, show was really entertaining. The only RE show/movie to even attempt to have an episode mostly about puzzle-solving. A show that embraces how fucking insane RE lore is was really nice too.
