This is the angle I was missing I think, I couldn't wrap my mind around an intentional campaign of self-victimization, but looking at this through the lens of conspiratorial thinking makes so much more sense and is a much more simple answer.

The right has been using trans issues as a wedge, and the more it works the more they'll expand their legislation. They're starting by focusing on children because it's the easiest way to get bi-partisan consensus. Is it overly-dramatic to claim they are the subject of an active genocide at this point? Yes. Is it naďve to think that eradication of Trans people isn't an eventual goal of the more extreme on the American right? Also yes.

Again though, trans activists have planted their flag on a hill that they are 100% going to lose if they keep getting baited into publicly advocating for children to have nearly unregulated access to puberty blockers. It's the same problem they always have because their ideology requires these extreme fringes of moral sensibility. If you buy a HP game, you are anti-trans. If you restrict access to puberty blockers, you are anti-trans.
