This election results is overblown. When NJ is done counting it’s going to be like a 4 or 5 point win for the democrats and VA always flip flops.
Not to mention Dem governors never win more than 1 term in NJ, so these results are even better than normal.
Damage control or delusion?
I doubt there's enough single party votes outstanding to hit a five point margin, there'd have to be enough votes to nearly double the current margin of 2.6 points. In either case, Murphy won in 2017 by 14.1 points. (Obama won by 15.5 and 17.8 points, Hillary by 14 points and Biden by 15.9 points)
The rest depends on when you start counting.
There's been four elected Democratic Governors of New Jersey since 1989, one of them resigned before his term was up due to scandal and a Democrat was elected to succeed him. (So they did win two elections in a row, 2001 and 2005.) There's been two elected Republican Governors since 1989, both were re-elected, one then resigned. From 1953-1985, the Democrats won six of nine gubernatorial elections, all of them back-to-back.
Four of the last five Governors of Virginia were Democrats. Seven of the last ten. Bob McDonnell's term is the only instance since 1882 in a which a party served a single term in a row.
