The meme is a picture of him with the cigar in his mouth as he says it the line, so it makes sense to change it to "earf". It would make exactly the same amount of sense if the character was white. Maybe there's some accidental racial connotations that non-American audiences might not understand, but all the people saying "he doesn't actually say it like that in the movie", as though that matters, are missing the point as well.

The meme wasn't created with the intention of changing the context of the quote, it was created from a false memory of the quote, a false memory instanced in part from the racist idea that a black person would say "earf" instead of "earth" because of AAVE. If that was a white character who had said the line, I guarantee that the text would have read "welcome to earth" because there would be no reason to imply a mispronunciation.

All of that said, on a scale of 1-100, this is like a... 5 racism. It shows a likely unintentional bias but the person who created the meme probably hasn't read the Turner Diaries if you know what I mean.

Yeah, that meme was always a racist joke. I see it in the Gaurdians clip - even if coincidental/accidental - at the very least it is not a reach as to how gamers are gonna receive that and laugh at it, and that should have been considered in production, and that's generously giving the benefit of the doubt.

Removed from the Gaurdians game, it's arguable that it was a slick racist joke that entered impressionable non-black-people's stock of memes without overt racist intent (not gonna claim that I was beyond this stuff), but by 2021, plenty of people have explained what's damaging about this one and it's a dead easy one to give up. I mean, be honest and explain what was funny about the misquote. Unfortunate to see it being perpetuated by mainstream entertainment.

Would be cool if the devs edit that out with an apology.

There's definitely people fighting back against the original meme being racist, it's pretty clear that people in their rush to defend GotG are ignoring there are users in here that at least seem to be saying the original is not racist, or offering plausible deniability to it ("I'm British" and "well he smokes a cigar in that movie" are pretty sus).

I don't particularly think GotG is intentionally referencing it, but it is accidentally referencing it, and could easily be fixed by changing the spelling to "Urth", which retains the same joke and leaves out any plausible connection to a racist reference, intended or not.

My three year old has fallen in love with Astro from Astro's Playroom. He walks around the house talking about him like they are best friends. I've tried introducing him to Mario, but he honestly couldn't care less, he just wants to watch Astro. I think it has a lot to do with how Astro will idly interact with the player and the other robots around him. The game is simple, colorful and is animated with a ton of personality.

Any thoughts? I adore this person and everything they have created. This album came out in 2007 and things have changed since then, but even in 2007 I certainly wasn’t using “gay” or “f*g” as an insult. But I have to admit I didn’t have a problem with this at the time because of who was singing it. Kevin’s sexuality and gender were intentionally vague at the time, but regularly alluded to as being fluid.


(I realize this whole thread could be about Kevin’s alter ego, Georgie Fruit, but Kevin has apologized for this, and I think everyone can agree it was offensive. And this isn’t a Georgie song anyway.)

Yea, it’s absolutely a great song and album. I kinda wondered if Kevin would revisit any other lyrics after removing “She-male” from Skeletal Lamping. They use “r*tard” in another song and that’s still a bit shocking.

On the other hand I don’t know that self-censoring your decade old lyrics is the way to go. I don’t love it, but that seems like a cop out that absolves you of responsibility long after your songs are out of the public consciousness.

Just rewatched LA Confidential. The acting writing direction pacing is pretty much perfect. Titanic was a fun well directed popcorn flick. But man LA Confidential to me is infinitely rewatachable. It's as perfect a crime film as I have seen.

I am the guy who made the thread about having to do a bunch of essays in a very short time to get from second year university into third, which I did, hooray.

Now my term started on the 23rd September and so far I have attended zero classes. This semester is 12 weeks, so its 5 weeks of classes so far. All my lectures and reading material are online now, so I am doing my best to keep up online, though not well tbh. My mental health isn’t great, my mum has been really sick and still is, and I’ve been finding it next to impossible to motivate myself to do university work. I have 3 modules this semester, and so far only one of the class tutors has been emailing me about my non attendance, which is my special subject.

Basically, i don’t know what the fuck to do, i feel exhausted even though I’ve done very very little work on it. I have no social contacts on campus at all, i haven’t made any friends or even people i know. I have Asperger’s which makes social stuff difficult anyway, and honestly lockdown made it much much worse. It’s a long commute as well, more than an hour, and i find it difficult to even think about. I fucking dread the idea of going anywhere near the campus.

So anyway, I could use some advice on what to do. I know in theory i should take a break from uni for now, but i don’t want to. For financial reasons, and the fact I’m 28 years old, nearly 29, and I feel like a big stupid idiot who took so long to get to university and can’t handle 3 classes a week like a fucking idiot. I’m considering asking to do online classes, but i suppose i want to know, am I too late to pull it back for my work? I didn’t feel like i did, but now i can’t decide, i just feel shit about it.

That's basically what you're saying. Sadly, it's also the thought process a lot of people feel when it comes to things like welfare, healthcare, and other social benefits. Not a good way of thinking imo.

I can't. Heart starts feeling like it's beating out of my chest and my knees and lower back begin to hurt. I never become drowsy due to how uncomfortable it is to breath.

In my 35 years on this Earth I have never once fallen asleep flat on my back (besides when I was a baby, I imagine).
