Soooo, let me get this straight. In the midst of being invaded by Russia, and trying to organize a military defense force and a citizenry as well, while still showing himself publicly for morale and avoiding getting shot, they expect the President to both see that this is happening and send out some type of Slavic executive order ending racism? Most folks fundamentally believe that the policing system in its modern incarnation is ultimately necessary to stop Black and Brown people from destroying this country from the inside out, so no matter how many videos of Black and Brown folks getting killed by this system you shove in their face they are never actually going to take the steps to prevent another George Floyd from happening. Floyd was not killed because he was a racial minority, he was killed because cops literally don't give a fuck about what they do to "civilians" and they're borderline exempt from being held accountable. Even when they abuse and kill white people. (Black people are disproportionately killed by the police compared to their total population share but white people far and away are the largest number of victims of police abuse and police-related death, all of which are violations of basic civil and constitutional rights by police aka crimes.)

There's no interest in practical reforms because people like yourself are too busy turning up to armed "police abolition" meetings in Black-majority cities and demanding white people end capitalism and colonialism instead of getting behind a push to convince the Democrats to reform things like qualified immunity and stop filibustering incredibly minor efforts like Tim Scott's bill which had Republican support in 2020 after Floyd's murder. Before anyone starts to flame me or say im lying. Please read through the text. Since this is the story of why i turned around at the border and lessons learned. If my situation was different i would still go! Nb! i have been traveling for same days now with little sleep so dont expect an neatly presented essay.

Story starts out with that i want to help the people of Ukraine (and still do). I have plenty of combat experience and history in emergency care and security work.

I jump into my car and after a day of driving i end up in Poland, where i could find a general consulate to assist me joining the army. After going through my papers (passport and military records) I got a contact number to a recruitment officer on the other side of the border in Ukraine. At the same place i found a new friend from Belarus that wanted to join, since he escaped the Dictator state of Belarus and is now living in another European country. No one to this point speaks English but we get by quite nicely with google translate.

Next goal was to link up with our contact in Ukraine, where we had to go ourselves. Luckily my new friend had a taxi driver friend that took us to the border for free. (my car is still parked somewhere in Poland)

Later we meet up with two other Belarusians with a similar story that wanted to fight injustice. After a long wait we finally got contacted by our link to cross the border.

After dodging tons of press (thank god for corona facemasks), we finally where supposed to enter Ukraine, but my new friends where not allowed since they came from Belarus and where denied at the border, since their "blood" was from Belarus.

Do note we got denied entry even with a military serviceman waiting for us on the other side of the control. Additionally they told us we where the first to join via those means. As the recruitment process was not used yet.

We where told to wait at a hotel until they would give us a call from the internal security. However, when they called back i was the only one that could go since im not from Belarus.

But for me to go alone into military camp to sign a contract i have never seen in Ukraine. Additionally, i dont know any Russian/Polish or Ukrainian, seems a bit risky by itself but ok.

The recruiter told me the contract was in English, but also that it lasted until "the end of the war" whatever that means in technical terms. However, i have sick parents and asked them if something happened to them could i then leave? But that question our contact could not answer.

Therefor i choose to drop the project.

Lessons learned / things to consider:

If we where the first "true" volunteer for the army. Where are the rest i see post here?

Dont expect a streamlined recruitment process, since its all new.

While waiting to enter the country, we saw large numbers of paramilitary dressed civilians and some military crossing the border. Where are those people going? After i investigated, i think some of them might end up in "militia" groups by accident.

However, do NOTE this is ILLEGAL. Some nations allows you to fight for another nation if you serve under the military only. All other forms of civilian militias can lead you to get trialed when you get home and you are not protected by the Geneva convention. You end up risking ending up on a no fly list etc etc. DONT DO IT.

Additionally, several of the people i saw had tattoos. Which is by itself not a issue. But when there are civilians volunteering with skull tattoos on their neck and knuckle tattoos. Some alarms should go off.

Therefor i would presume some of these people will go to right/left extremist groups who are know for extreme violence.

This leads me to a warning!!!

If joining do it trough the ONLY official way the Ukrainian Embassy / Consulates. If you end up with some extremist groups by accident, since you linked up with some strangers on the internet. It WILL have dire consequences for you later in life.

Right now im sitting a 5 minut walk from the the border, waiting for transport home. I feel a bit like a coward for turning down my mission. But i simply can't ignore the fact if my parents gets worse i will not be able to help them.

And yes, this is not "a random border" this is THE border.

White people don't have to worry about shit like that; y'all will eat grey-ass meat from two years ago so long as it's been in the freezer all that time.

Pat dry, wrap in foil well, put in ziploc bag, remove much of the air. Supposed to use a bag sealer but no one's got time for that. End up with minimal ice crystals (or none if you bagseal) and no freezer burn.

Can last up to two years like that. Likely longer but I have never tested that far. Longest was a duck breast for 2 years on the dot.
