I’m early 40’s and fell off gaming fairly hard about five years back. Just a combination of factors, kinda bums me out, never thought I’d have zero desire for a PS5 or Series X. I should definitely get a steam deck, I reckon that’d be like gaming viagra for me. I played Call of Juarez on Switch a few weeks back for the first time and there was definitely some twitching downstairs.

I miss gaming, just not enough to put any time or money into doing more of it at the moment.

You know what would be nice? If we could get some kind of acknowledgement that staff are looking at this and having conversations about what happened here. Not an apology, but also not "let the thread run for half the day, lock it and then pretend this didn't happen." This is the second time in recent weeks (that I am aware of) that a band of posters cruelly made of fun of a victim of domestic abuse and a moderator was involved and basically nothing was done or *even said* that would indicate there is any comprehension of how destructive this behavior is.

It is psychologically damaging to victims of abuse to see their own histories reflected in these stories only to have the victim mercilessly eviscerated by the community. People were speaking up in the other thread I am referencing about how hurtful it was and I'm saying it now about this one. Doing this sort of harm is not okay and sweeping it under the rug absolutely isn't either. Those people are members of this community too, even the ones that only lurk and never post. I understand the reflexive impulse to close ranks around prominent posters and especially moderators who have plenty of their own psychological harm inflicted in service to this site to deal with, but it doesn't make it okay to do this.

Furthermore, I emphatically disagree with you that all of the reason in the world to be skeptical of the thrust of the yahoo article isn't directly in the article itself. Within the first few paragraphs we learn that this young queer woman - there's two things right there that make her more vulnerable to abuse - was actually hospitalized before going into foster care. Later on we learn that she has supporters at the school who insist the school has an agenda (supporters who were specifically dismissed by at least one poster in that thread, so it's not like *nobody* read the article), and later on a professor insisting the school's claims do not make sense and she believes Mackenzie.

The real problem, both in the way the article is presented and in the manner it was reacted to, was the conflation of wealth/class and the seriousness of abuse. I am currently working towards getting into a MSW program and in the course of building a resume, my focus has been in working with homeless kids in my city - the vast majority of whom are queer - and in my experience there is no correlation between how wealthy a family is and how fucked up they're wiling to get in how they treat their kids. It is also not strange at all for a kid who comes out as queer to be totally disowned by their family and to have to leave with nothing and find a way to survive. In general we have a HUGE problem in this community with weighing oppression and life circumstances of individuals against each other in an extremely broad way, like it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn there is still someone from that first thread out there thinking to themselves right now, "well she still went to a great school and grew up in a nice house so I don't know why I should give a shit." This sort of attitude only serves to divide us and promote a lack of understanding of the multidimensional way abuse functions in a family system.

I'm not out for blood, I'm not here for apologies, I want action and change. This site was *literally founded* on a shared ethic of believing women who are victims of abuse and assault so I'll say again, I am having a hard time understanding how that first thread even happened unless we have totally lost our way here. Maybe we have.

I was told that this forum was a progressive space for thoughtful gaming discussion but also defensive of women, LGBT+ members, and all minority groups in between and that is why I joined. But I have quickly learned that this thinking is not shared by some on the moderation team specifically but it also feels like certain users are allowed to skirt the rules. Don't have more to add just echoing that your post is very accurate and wanted.

It would probably be better to find online tutoring, guided tutorials, study groups, etc. that have a teaching element but without the ridiculous costs of a traditional four-year college. Learning the fundamentals and industry standards on your own is difficult, even if you practice your actual craftsmanship everyday. Every day I regret not having taken the online path sooner than I did.

I got my current job with some old 2D animation shots. Like....not even up-to-date GOOD stuff. Just "You can move shapes? Welcome aboard."

Private tutoring helps too! I'm doing such a set-up with a Riot developer right now, where he gives me a personal assignment and I complete it at my own pace (I do pay him a weekly rate though) and honestly I've learned more in half a year with regards to CGI animation than I did in the years I spent at school. Today I just blocked out a quick 6 second animation of a character in a couple of hours and it looks good; no way I could've been pressed to do that in school in such a short time because a lot of the fundamentals of working in the medium just...weren't explained. Not only were they not explained, but the curriculum of a lot of these schools aren't set up for the level of specialization most people may need to get industry-standard skills. A lot of times you're given an overview where you're made into more of a generalist, which makes it more likely you're gonna be blown out of the water by the person who specialized in their one interest for years. For real, look around to see if some industry pros are doing some tutoring on the side!

At first I was struggling between playing online versus offline with mods on PC. I love being able to help defeat bosses and assist other players.

But in a room with a woman's hands impaled to a wall, her head slumped and her knees against the floor, I found 3 messages all containing rape jokes, complete with thrusting phantom motions.

I turned online off, put on my mods, and haven't looked back.

It kills the immersion and is fucking sickening. Some of the other notes are more harmless, but you can only see so many childish sex references in one play session before it just makes you feel like you're playing the game with a bunch of humorless people, some of whom find rape funny.
