The thing is you need "downtime" to tell a story, and I get it. But 15 minute of downtime in tv show per episode can be 60 minute because its a 2 hour movies. my attention always drop in those downtime.

I think people are missing the point a bit with the "Black Hermione" thing.

Like, Dumbledore in the books was an old man with no obvious interest in sex. After the books were finished, Rowling tried to score some progressive diversity points by claiming that Dumbledore was gay, and there was nothing in the books that could disprove that. It's totally worth noting and pointing out that Rowling was either afraid to say it before, or that she made it up after. It's not worth trying to make Dumbledore straight.

For the Cursed Child, the producers (of which Rowling was one?) decided to cast an award-winning Black actress as Hermione, and racists immediately jumped up to say that Black girls/women can't play as Hermione, because Hermione is obviously white. And then the racists ran to Rowling hoping she would take their side, and she was like "No? I don't see any reason why Hermione can't be Black."

I think it's worth pointing out that this was probably stunt casting and the producers were hoping for the obvious publicity that it generated, and Rowling was probably happy to score some more easy progressive diversity points now for things that she didn't try to do in the late 90's. But digging into the weeds and trying to argue that Black women can't play Hermione, that just seems like a mistake.

I'm reminded of that scene in Stranger Things where the kids dressed as the Ghostbusters for Halloween, and the kids demand that Lucas should play as Winston, because Winston was "the Black one" in the Ghostbusters, and Lucas is "the Black one" in their friend group. That shit is wrong. Not everything has to be about race.

Which isn't to say that it's wrong to take notice of the weird implications of things like Harry and Ron mocking Hermione for her opposition to slavery, but maybe keep things in perspective, and try not to say that Black girls can't look up to Hermione, or that Lucas from Stranger Things isn't allowed to like Venkman more than he likes Winston.

But one of the things that is both interesting and infuriating is that staff needs to be cognizant of damn near everything that goes on in the world. Seriously, we should all have geopolitical degrees in order to do this shit.  That’s on top of things like racial injustice, gender inequality…and I’m forgetting something, oh yeah, GAMING industry knowledge.

I am immensely proud of the staff we have for being able to navigate the myriad bullshit that shows up every single day. I am fairly up to speed on gaming and have a general understanding of political issues. But I’m a cis, straight, white, male, so I rely on other staff members to help out for a lot of other things. And I respect their opinion and take it into account before I make any decision (assuming I am the one that needs to make the decision). I’m not gonna whine about how hard it is, but the breadth of topics we have to cover and moderate is not a simple task.

No one, especially not Ezra Miller or some transphobic alt-right troll account, is better informed on this issue than the staff. Their duties wouldn't allow them to be. The fact that they allowed that troll to correct theyself first just shows their far reaching benevolence. (Which unfortunately makes TransERA feel unsafe and causes them to leave in droves.)

I cannot believe we're two years into a pandemic and people are still trotting out the ol' "durrrrr if masks work, just wear one! Why does it concern you if others don't?" garbage. As if they don't know how community spread works.

Idk man I’ve been following cdc guidelines and trusting science. Science says that the useless masks 90% of people are wearing wrong anyway don’t do a whole lot, especially on airplanes. Why trust science and guidelines selectively? When the cdc said mask up, I masked up. When the cdc says vaccines work and to get boosted, I did. I’m vaxxed and triple boosted. Odds are, most places you’re gonna travel to won’t have mask mandates in public spaces on either end of your plane ride, so why go through the hassle of faking as if wearing a mask wrong on a plane but only while not eating or drinking is gonna make one fucking iota of a difference?

The vaccines work. Hospitalizations and deaths are way down. Most countries don’t have mask mandates for public transportation, and planes are some of the safest places re: air filtration you’re going to encounter. You’re gonna get on a plane in a mask and land in a bus or train where nobody’s masked. It’s theater. If you want to avoid illness, get vaccinated, boosted, and buy a brand new N95 mask and ensure you have a good seal by shaving that morning and having it fitted. At some point y’all gotta get over the mask obsession and just accept that they barely worked to begin with and the whole world is basically moving on, listening to the science that shows that the typical cloth masks people are wearing incorrectly don’t really do much to stop the spread of an increasingly less deadly illness, especially on airplanes full of people who just showed a negative covid test. I personally trust science. I trust the vaccine. I trust local covid statistics, so i stay in to minimize my risk during spikes. Otherwise I go to work and travel as needed, and follow whatever guidance I’m given about masking and social distancing.
