I blame colleges for giving these people the idea that worthless essays with zero substance is of any value or that you could make a decent living from it.
Nothing wrong with being a professional writer, or even an academic critic.
But
fame & fortune and
respect as a master of your craft are not the same fucking thing, so don't bitch if the work you do only holds commercial value and the insights you have are whatever pops into your head while you're taking a shit that you decide to share on twitter and not the result of stringent research and analysis.
Being a writer is like... the least possible fucking barriers to entry of any job going. The fact that there are people who command huge amounts of respect but aren't rich and famous, or the fact cushy lazy jobs that pay the bills are hotly contested isn't anyones fault, and it certainly isn't 'the establishment' telling 'lies' about meritocracy.
It's the chasm between your own self belief and your actual talent / skill.
