Got another guy who spent several years trying to scam resetera users and finally got a bite.

Add me to the list of folks who have been scammed here, unfortunately. The user is Rorschach Noir

I posted in a Playdate thread that I'd be interested in buying one if anyone had one to sell. He reached out and we agreed on $210; my mistake was seeing that he had been on Era for ~4 years and thinking that was enough to ensure he wasn't a scammer.

I sent the money last Wednesday via Venmo, but didn't enable for purchases because of the aforementioned misplaced trust, which is totally on me.

I hadn't heard back, so I asked for a tracking number and he told me he shipped it on Friday via USPS. I have Informed Delivery and nothing showed up in my dashboard, so I asked again for a tracking number and he brushed it off, as if every package sent in 2022 doesn't have a tracking number. He's been strangely communicative, but at this point I am clearly being scammed. He also did weird things after the fact like make all of his Era profile information private (like last login time) and changed his name on Venmo from what I am assuming his real name is (Kal S) to simply "KS". He also has a lot of recent posts on Era threads for things like Steam Deck and Analogue Pocket that have been edited to single words; I'm wondering if these might have been scam fishing posts initially.

I reported him to Venmo and my bank, who works with other banks to maintain a list of scammers and they have added his information to this.

Anyway, good work Kal, you got me. I'd pay a lot more than $210 to watch karma smack you right in the fucking head, but I guess I won't be there to see it.

Using points of comparison is fine, especially when your concern is that the movie is hamfisted and culturally offensive in the same way as those films. You have also done absolutely nothing to prove this movie is dissimilar to those plots.

But if you’re going to say that the film is "culturally offensive" you need a reference a culture.

The Na'vi are a pastiche of multiple cultures (which is incredibly common in a Fantasy), and not an exploration of any specific one that I'm aware of. That's might be nitpicky to some people, but using this loose rubric I could make the case that any number of Fantasy races/cultures are offensive.

But, for some reason, only Avatar gets held to this standard.

How do you know I don’t hold other franchises to the same standard? Like I love FF14 but the Beast Tribes (a huge red flag on its own) being derivative of multiple indigenous cultures is really bad, for one example.

I don’t think your perspective is completely wrong. I just don’t think most people bother doing the work versus defaulting to what is essentially a lazy criticism if you don’t do that work.
