I'm going to be honest and I'll probably be dog piled for it but I find the whole people having problems with dinosaurs having feathers to be very toxic masculinity for lack of a better word/term. I feel like it boils down to scary lizards = cool and masculine and feathered birds = unmasculine and uncool. Doesn't matter that these creatures can still kill with extreme ease, the fact it has feathers is too much to even consider to be cool or dangerous. Let's cut to the chase here.

White men spent hundreds of years forcibly making themselves the face of the heroic everyman in fiction, whitewashing ostensibly non-white characters and narratives, and simultaneously upholding barriers for non-white people to tell their own stories in various mediums.

You all are everywhere in fiction, and while this level of indoctrination means it's "easy to relate" to white men, the other side of the coin means there's nothing creatively interesting about a white man as a protagonist in any story at this point. We've seen you all before whether we wanted to or not. And this suddenly doesn't become less true just because we're now scanning in real actors into video games.

The Callisto Protocol was interesting insofar as it was a spiritual sequel to Dead Space. But it would've perked my ears more had a Black person been in the driver's seat instead.

It just seems so strangely backwards argue that being black or non-binary would instantly make the character interesting. They're not actually making any argument here. It's like someone arguing how interesting it would be if the character had blue hair.

If your argument is that you just want to see yourself in that character then say that, don't act like it would suddenly make a boring character interesting because you haven't changed anything about the character beyond superficial elements.

She literally said that they could have changed nothing, grabbed the first Black guy they saw off the street and scanned him instead, and she'd find it to be "creatively interesting" now. Because she's stupid and stunted she doesn't realize she's telling everyone that she's incredibly vain and superficial.

Let me put it another way:

Do even the white men here get excited at a white man being a protagonist?

Not get excited at the game mechanics, or the world-building, or the art design of a game a white man happens to be a protagonist in.

Have you ever in your life actually been legitimately hyped to see a white man being presented as a white man in a major work of fiction?

Like, what was your Black Panther moment? Where were you in the world where you were like "Finally, a white man's story is being told?"

I'm curious.

What's a "white man's story"? Why would I think there's a single one that needs to be told? Why would I get excited about the appearance of the main character of any story?

You can drill down into the science behind it, going from basic effects on the body through to binding and cellular changes.

It's not fully there yet; there's a lot of repetition and you need to know how to phrase things to be able to get to those deeper layers, but it's still doing better than a chunk of GP's in those early stages.

They could have also created an original character render not based on a real person, thereby being free to create any kind of character that isn't a Hollywood white dude.

But, if we have to insist on "it's based on a real person!!!" thing... they could have also picked an actor who isn't a white dude.

But if they just really really REALLY liked Josh Duhamel and really wanted his face in the game... they could have made him a gay man, since those are severely underrepresented as video game protagonists (I cannot think of a single gay male dedicated protagonist in AAA gaming right now, and no, bi options for character creation/choices don't count).

Very hesitant to post this because I’m not generally one to tell others about my problems, im usually someone who tries to help solve everyone else’s when called upon, but this time I could use some advice, an ear, something. This is sort of my attempt at therapy I guess.

Been friends with someone at my job for over a year and a half, in the last few months we started talking more and more becoming closer friends. We were each others hype beasts, friendly competitors, and friend to talk to about work with.

In the last month, I started to develop some feelings for them, kept them to myself of course, between being coworkers and genuinely just wanting to be friends I just knew it wasn't something to be taken seriously plus they just recently got with someone new. I respect that.

Well while hanging out one time, I found out that they'd never been to Florida/Disney, where I'm from, so I privately asked this persons best friend if they think maybe we could all plan a trip next year for them to go all of us together, their best friend said that they couldn't make it so I said okay then asked them directly if they'd still want to go anyway just us two (boyfriend wouldn't be able to go because of other stuff) they said they don't want me spending that much money on them, which I respect, then broke down the prices for the hotel and fight and said we'd split it if they changed their mind. The park tickets would be free through another friend of mine. Then I got no response.

Hours later, I get a message that essentially punched me in the throat out of nowhere, it essentially says, "hey I'm sure other people would appreciate these things but I don't like gifts or surprises and my last relationship was really controlling so I don't like when you do even small things for me because you remind me of my ex and I want to be independent, just had to be honest please don't feel bad"

I'm like flabbergasted, before offering the trip, the most I'd done for them is invite them to eat for thanksgiving because they were alone that night just like me, and pay for movie tickets one time, and in the same day they paid for lunch. Then of course just help out at work when asked.

In my head I'm like how the hell do I respond to this? My response, was essentially me telling them, "hey I apologize, I didn't mean to bring up old bad memories, i was just trying to be nice, I genuinely think your cool and just wanted to be kind, while I do like you I know you're in a relationship and would never try to step on that, you're absolutely independent and a badass" and then in an attempt to raise her spirit and be funny, I was like "you're smart, funny, kind, etc, that's all you nobody else did that for you girl"

Got no response till almost 24hrs later, and it was essentially a message that says, "hey if you respect someone's relationship don't tell them you like them, you're stressing me out, you need to chill out"

I respond again, "I'm sorry I was only being honest, I didn't mean to screw things up so badly, that wasn't my intention and I've only ever wanted to be your friend, never had ulterior motives. I take responsibility and yeah I fucked up"

No response again for 24 hours until the middle of the night when I see this "hey I believe you're being genuine in your apology but I need a step back and by step back I mean we can't be friends outside of work anymore, I'll be nice and professional at work of course but I told you my boundaries and it seems like you're not listening"

I just replied, "okay, I will leave you alone"

Again, all in my head I'm like what the fuck is going on, what boundaries are you talking about or did I cross? Did she mean when she said I need to chill out? We’ve never discussed any other boundaries. All I did was try to plan a birthday trip, invite you to eat on thanksgiving, and at worst say I like you but you have a boyfriend.

Now at work she won't say hi, good morning, or even look at me, she removed me from her friends group chat, her/our other friends at work who are closer to her will say hi but won't talk to me or play games after work anymore.

What the hell happened? Plus to top off this shit flavored cupcake, I'm moving into the same apartment complex as her in a month and she helped me get it. Plus I was supposed to be getting a promotion to her exact position in January and we would've been direct partners, what happens now?

It feels like I killed my best friends dog and they asked to me to never talk to them again. It's destroyed me mentally, I'm performing worse at work, my diet has been shit since then, I just feel terrible and tbh I don't even know how what I did was so bad but maybe it is, I've never had a good friend just say stay out of my life and it’s made me feel like I’ma terrible person. Plus her and her friends were my only real friends in the state we’re in since I moved here for work.

Anyone ever deal with anything like this, is our friendship really over or does time heal all wounds? Do I cancel my new apartment and eat the costs? Am I still gonna get the promotion? I was the top candidate before all this but the final decision maker is literally her best friend in real life. Should I pull my application for the promotion entirely? Should I look at work elsewhere? I don’t want any hr squabbles over not getting the job possibly because of this, I’m not that guy and would just accept not getting it and even if I did get it I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable if I now make her feel that way and we’d be sharing an office.

I want her to be okay, but I want to be okay too. I just really want a time machine to go back to the day before thanksgiving.

Plus November in general was a shit month for me, an old friend from my school years died, my car broke down completely and I had to get a new one, my apartment raised my rent which is why I’m leaving. Then this, all before my birthday to wrap up the month, which I spent alone.

She didn’t even say happy birthday when everyone else at work did, like damn man.

I'm just lost and need someone to talk to tbh. Sorry for the long ass story, to anyone who actually reads it, thank you. Been about a week or so since all this happened but I still think about it daily, especially since when I’m working in office I can feel the missing presence of my old friend. Been friends with someone at my job for over a year and a half, in the last few months we started talking more and more becoming closer friends. We were each others hype beasts, friendly competitors, and friend to talk to about work with.

In the last month, I started to develop some feelings for them, kept them to myself of course, between being coworkers and genuinely just wanting to be friends I just knew it wasn't something to be taken seriously plus they just recently got with someone new. I respect that.

I'm like flabbergasted, before offering the trip, the most I'd done for them is invite them to eat for thanksgiving because they were alone that night just like me, and pay for movie tickets one time, and in the same day they paid for lunch. Then of course just help out at work when asked.

In my head I'm like how the hell do I respond to this? My response, was essentially me telling them, "hey I apologize, I didn't mean to bring up old bad memories, i was just trying to be nice, I genuinely think your cool and just wanted to be kind, while I do like you I know you're in a relationship and would never try to step on that, you're absolutely independent and a badass" and then in an attempt to raise her spirit and be funny, I was like "you're smart, funny, kind, etc, that's all you nobody else did that for you girl"

Got no response till almost 24hrs later, and it was essentially a message that says, "hey if you respect someone's relationship don't tell them you like them, you're stressing me out, you need to chill out"

I respond again, "I'm sorry I was only being honest, I didn't mean to screw things up so badly, that wasn't my intention and I've only ever wanted to be your friend, never had ulterior motives. I take responsibility and yeah I fucked up"

No response again for 24 hours until the middle of the night when I see this "hey I believe you're being genuine in your apology but I need a step back and by step back I mean we can't be friends outside of work anymore, I'll be nice and professional at work of course but I told you my boundaries and it seems like you're not listening"

I just replied, "okay, I will leave you alone"

Again, all in my head I'm like what the fuck is going on, what boundaries are you talking about or did I cross? Did she mean when she said I need to chill out? We’ve never discussed any other boundaries. All I did was try to plan a birthday trip, invite you to eat on thanksgiving, and at worst say I like you but you have a boyfriend.

This argument is so stupid. Without any context, story, or background, a protagonist is no deeper that a cardboard cutout. It takes the plot, actions, and dialogue to flesh out a character. A black/female/disabled character is no more interesting than a white male UNTIL context is applied, FFS.
