So a common thing in the DC universe is Gorilla City, a city of super-intelligent apes that is very technoligically advanced in Africa. The problem is that it is the most technologically advanced place in Africa in the DC universe.....and it is full of apes. Given how black people are often called apes as a racist insult it is a sus look. I know people try to excuse it as "apes are from Africa, it's one the smartest places in DC in general and it came from a time when apes where popular in comics, etc" but it really doesn't solve the core issue and optics and trying to use the time period as an excuse for it being tone deaf absolutely does not help.

I mean, Gorilla City is no different than Wakanda really. It's not even the "most technologically advanced place in Africa" many times because the apes have (or don't depending on the story) superpowers, not technology always. The depictions of it are wildly variant across the board, unlike Wakanda which is always seen as an autarky utopia (even though such a thing is impossible) especially because Wakanda sets itself out of cultural reasons while Gorilla City sets itself off because it was founded by apes being hunted by humans. Gorilla City's hiding is more like the Inhumans.

It's only "racist" if you see apes and think "Black people" because the entire concept is "what if our nearest ancestors got superpowers too?" They're trying to liberate their fellow apes so of course they're going to go where there's a bunch of apes.

A significant contingent of Republican politicians don't actually hate their Democratic coworkers either. They put on a fire-and-brimstone bit to their base and then chat these dudes up at the gym about the wife and kids, and apparently it's so jarring that it throws off younger and newer Democratic officials. When it comes to foundational issues of the way this country is structured, and the fact that politicians within both parties are rich assholes largely insulated from the consequences of any conservative policies, there really isn't much opposition between them. They really just use the culture war issues for campaign and fundraising fodder. It's why the Obamas and Bushes get along so well; they recognize they're the same class. It's liberals who are confused about that.

Don't get me wrong though- some of these fuckers in the Republican party fully believe the bit and absolutely would join a lynch mob on camera if they had the opportunity, and would dare the FBI to do something about it. But we need to understand- preferably sooner rather than later- that largely there is no political apparatus in the United States that firmly stands unwaveringly on progressive principles.

If you’ve been on Twitter at all the past week or so, you have probably seen a surge in conversation about “Bluesky,” the latest attempted Twitter replacement, and probably the most talked-about one since Mastodon or that one day Hive was popular.

But in this case, this one is getting extra attention because it’s close to an exact clone of Twitter and Jack Dorsey, former Twitter CEO, is on the board there. So there is a “legitimacy” to this one that the others perhaps didn’t have. And Jack has been on there lamenting how the whole thing with Elon went down, and how he doesn’t think he’s done a terribly good job running the site.

Invites have now become pretty limited to Bluesky (thanks to reader Erick for mine) as I think it’s become clear it grew too fast. Before you ask me for an invite, while early influencers got them in batches, us “normal” people don’t seem to get them for a while, so no, I don’t have any. But if you’re already on there, you can feel free to follow me.

So, what exactly is it like over there? Who is posting? Is it actually going to replace Twitter? Let’s discuss:

New Game+ - I made the analogy that if you have an existing Twitter following, it feels a bit like a New Game+ mode for Twitter, starting over from level 1, but you retain all the posting knowledge you gained from the previous decade-long playthrough. There is something both strange and somewhat comforting to go from 150,000 followers to under 50, and getting one like on a “skeet” (what users have decided to call tweets there, much to the dismay of the founders). But while it’s relaxing, I do find myself wondering if I want to build up another following on a nearly-identical Twitter clone from scratch. Or if it’s worth posting things to a few dozen people if I don’t grow over there.

Zero Tolerance For Harassment – One very non-Twitter thing Bluesky is doing is essentially booting out all potential a-holes immediately from the service. It reminds me of that old story about the Nazi who gets kicked out of a bar, with the bartender saying if you don’t kick out the first Nazi, suddenly more come and you’re a Nazi bar. One of the big “stories” on Bluesky the past day or so was a transphobe who seemed to get immediately booted by the CEO herself, which everyone was celebrating. And more generally, you can post anything from thirst traps to console war opinions and you will not have a million people harassing you in the replies or quote tweets. But I do wonder if that kind of moderation is sustainable at scale.

There’s A Lot of Nudity – Did I just say thirst traps? Yeah, a pretty common practice on Bluesky right now is to post sexy photos or sometimes outright full nudity, with users seemingly liberated by a low number of followers and an insulated community. You can filter those out through settings if you want. To be clear, I am not complaining about the nudity, just making an observation, as it keeps showing up on the “What’s Hot” section of the site, taking that identifier quite literally.

It's Bit of a Cool Kids Club – While yes, there are a good number of celebrities who have gotten invites and made profiles there, the majority of people I see posting are “Twitter celebrities” who I recognize from over there, and your feed is constantly full of their replies to one another. They get together to dunk on people who have showed up they don’t like (Matt Yglesias is getting toasted over there) and it feels like they’re celebrating being kings and queens of their own private island. It’s just a tad bit…cliquey, and as someone who showed up to keep posting random thoughts and video game things, I don’t really feel like I have a place there.

It's Held Together By web3 Duct Tape – One concern I have about the site is just how much its founders, including Dorsey, and CEO appear to be deep down the web3 rabbit hole. The site is “decentralized,” but I haven’t really seen any actual benefits to that only that it seems much harder than usual to add extremely basic features. They had to scramble to even get a block button online. I am deeply skeptical of anything having to do with web3 and I have yet to actually hear what the benefits are to building this new platform on that framework.

It's Understaffed and Overpopulated – This is not Meta rolling out a big Twitter competitor. Despite the support of Dorsey here, this site is run by quite literally, like nine people, which has created huge technical problems (there is something called a “hellthread” that if you reply to it, you will get stuck in an endless stream of notifications like a non bcc’ed email chain). The site has ballooned to tens of thousands of users, hence the invite slowdown, and nine people are having a tough time keeping up with the workload.

Ultimately, I think Twitter would have to quite literally cease to exist for one of these clones to replace it, even a Dorsey-adjacent one. I do think there are a lot of good things about Bluesky, the relief from posting to a massive audience and going back to a small one, the deletion of bigots and the lack of reply guys. But it also definitely has its issues, and I’m not sure how to form my own community there. Again, add me on there if you want to hang out, otherwise I’m sort of just posting completely into the void.

That article actually misses the funniest thing about BlueSky. It only exists because it's funded by Twitter, Dorsey's "investment" is peanuts compared to what he got Twitter to spend on it. (And Dorsey's own money traces back to Twitter.) Presumably Elon won't cut it off because he and Dorsey are buds and it's not that much money but they're "fleeing" Twitter for a Twitter-funded spin-off by the guy who thinks the problem with Twitter was it was too easy to squelch speech.

In tonight's Bluesky news apparently several notorious transphobes got accounts with the intent to doxx people and the trans community is urgently trying to get Jay and the devs to do something about it. The only thing from Jay so far is "we're watching" and "just block". 🙄 People are like you gotta do better than that. Don't need to wait till someone is harmed again before acting.

Frightening. I was happy to hear the trans community getting a moment of respite on a new social space, but of course this group would unfortunately be the victim against the first real stress test of bad actors. I’m hoping the results are positive in eliminating their behavior.

The real hot needle aspect of it is that the bad actor in question is a black trans woman. So without understanding the context (which is currently being supplied in spades) I can get why someone wouldn't want to jump into taking a side in what, at first glance, looks like an inter-community drama.

Apparently they use tactics associated with a certain place and are on opposite sides of Keffals (who has their own issues with anti-Asian racism from what I've read). They use context collapse and their own marginalized identity to attack others. Also read some stuff about claiming Anne Frank had white privilege and harassing some person over chili (the chili person is also on BS and unhappy about this person's presence)
