GTA III came out after plenty of games understood the necessity of separating the camera and character controls. Tons of PS1 games supported dual analog, WASD+Mouse was dominant on PC, console FPSes were attempting to replicate that back to at least Turok, TimeSplitters used the "Halo method" before Halo did, etc.

I'm pretty sure the PS2 era trilogy doesn't use the second analog for anything, just the button under it. It's absolutely a legitimate critique.

I don't remember many PS1 games using the Analog Controller. Were there any standouts?

One of the GOATs

Metal Gear Solid was made for analog in mind.

Ape escape specifically as it required dual shock to play.

Other games like FFVIII, Resident Evil 3, supported analog and they released games like Resident Evil 1 and 2 with analog controls. I'd say the majority of psx games released from 1998-1999 to the end of its life cycle supported analog. Maybe not the right stick, but the left stick definitely.

The graphical fidelity is pretty insane, and that crowd density is rather pushing it.  This is either a bullshot actually next gen take, or we'll be seeing quite a downgrade down the road if this actually launches in 2025.

Personally don't care for the modern take.  I think it would've been better off doing either a 70's or 90's era take.  (Especially using a Tom Petty song in that trailer).

There better be a couple story missions in Tootsie's Cabaret

I'll have to wait and see what the actual game is like. Seeing those articles where they talk about not punching down and shit like that doesn't inspire a lot of faith.

Setting looks good though. If it's bad i'll just have to tune out the bullshit like I did with Watch_Dogs 2. If the gameplay is good enough I can excuse shit writing.

Absolutely amazing trailer.

I don't enjoy Rockstar games, so will probably pass, but they sure know how to sell their products.  :o

I'm excited for it, but also know it will be broken as hell at launch. There were so many things wrong with GTA V at launch, and 10 times as many as that with GTA Online at its launch.

On later replays, it became clear how many things were not working in my first playthrough. It is a wildly accomplished game once it's working correctly.

I didn’t particularly care for the campaign of GTAV. RDR2 I never finished. The mission design of the games isn’t for me. But just driving around the world is unmatched. Sleeping Dogs released near GTAV and I liked the campaign more. The actual open world part isn’t fair to compare. Same with Saints Row, Mafia, and whatever other open world games. Nobody does that part better.

Saints Row first game was weird in tone and didn't have a coherent world, but SR2 really pulled the brakes off and went for it. I spent a lot of time just driving around and re-trying the Activities (which became the core gameplay focus from SR3 onward), AND the story was surprising and dark.

Mafia is not an open-world game, I've repeatedly heard. Is it actually open?

:bow Sleeping Dogs :bow2
Not only a fantastic story, but innovative gameplay shifting between guns and melee that Rockstar has struggled with in EVERYTHING except Bully. Unsurprisingly, United Front Games developers had a number of Bully team members on staff.

I thought about teasing you about not finishing RDR2 but jesus christ that is a long-ass campaign.

Think there were circumstances at the time where I was away from my PS4 and RDR2. Forgot where I was at in the game. During COVID, there was an idea to start it all over again. But all those long horse rides and talking preamble to the action were too much the first time. Still open to trying it again on PC with mods one day.

Mafia (1 and 2, anyway) is and isn’t open world. They’re not of the GTA and Saints Row variety with activities and all. The open world is a map where the linear game takes place. Think The Getaway was like that where you had a detailed London but it’s a linear game.

???? You had a bugged version or something? I played it at launch and what wasnt working for you?

You mean its an open world but not a sandbox.

Yeah, I went back and played a later version from a fresh Save Data, and pedestrians were a lot more chatty, I think there were side missions that hadn't triggered during my first playthrough — not the Taxi Achievement one, that's STILL broken AFAIK — I think CJ's crack addict across from his home didn't show up during my first playthrough. It's been awhile, but I remember thinking "Oh, this is new!" after I'd already 1000/1000'd the game on 360.
