Don't bring up SoaP, you'll just get Willco excited again. ;)

You see, in my book, 10/10 equates to calling a film a flawless masterpiece. Raiders is most certainly not, no matter which way you slice it.

Oh, please. You know there are legions of nerds who will place Raiders above just about any film ever made, save for Star Wars.

No, not really.  The "nerd legions" represent a fraction of that Indy audience too, which was my point made at Drinky.  Internet geeks really don't do much business at the box office.  They're vocal and make a lot of noise, but when dollars count - theirs count the least.

You think Internet geeks were the only ones that watched Star Wars? :lol

I guess that's why the original was nominated for Best Picture or that the score played on the radio or that the prequels audience make-up was mostly FAMILIES.

Again, Internet geeks are vocal - they don't make films money.

I loved Full Metal Jacket, and from what I've seen of 2001, I love that movie too. I'm loving me some Kubrick and those are the only films of his I've seen but I plan on seeing the rest.

So you're trying to tell me geeks make up a fraction of the people who paid to see the prequels in theaters?

Geeks, children, and a few scattered cinema hounds made Lucas his money. Fact.

Uh, duh.

Uh, that's not a fact.  Children, families and teenagers made Lucas his money.  Not geeks.  Now, geeks can fall into some of those categories, but geeks alone do not make movies money.  They don't.  It's great when you can win 'em over to your side, but you don't need 'em.

Star Wars is a pop culture phenomenon.  My parents saw the prequels.  My younger sibilings saw the prequels.  My grandparents saw the prequels.  It wasn't a geek event for anyone after opening night, dude.

That's a valid way of looking at things. With Raiders imo, the "flaws" in the movie don't matter as much as they would in a movie like Godfather or Citizen Kane, which rely on great acting and a steller script. An adventure movie doesn't necessarily require those things in spades to be good. It would be like complaining about Lion King because it's "unrealistic" or "childish"; it's a fucking cartoon lol, the same rules don't apply.

At least, that's how I look at it

Now geeks do make Lucas money in merchandise, which is what I said like a page ago, and you wonder which one is more profitable.  That's another discussion.

Good Lord, I'm agreeing with Shake: a 10/10 is reserved for a technical masterpiece, and Spielberg is a perfectly consistent 7/10 director when it comes to technical quality. Of course, the AICN/Wilco/FoC film student set hates that, because it means most comic book movies, which have ticket sales and little else to qualify them, will never reach that echelon. OH TEH NO!

I don't consider "accessibility" a sterling directorial quality, anyhow, The best movies require people change to consider them, and that requires abandoning some of the familiar and comfortable and actually pushing the boundaries of technical style.

I disagree. Halloween 1 is a perfect horror movie, but from a film perspective it's far from perfect.

But others do, and you jumped to defend them. So pipe down if you don't actually agree with them. ::)

PD: The original Halloween is far more "perfect" than Raiders, imo.

Halloween 1 isn't a perfect horror movie, much less a good one, and makes an awful template. A classic should stand apart, even from its imitators, and Halloween is largely unwatchable these days, it's so dull. More Session 9s and less cheeseball slasher flicks, anyhow!

The original Halloween rocks, Drinky.  You shut your dirty whore mouth.  I do agree with you on one point, because it's not the template for the slasher genre.  That goes to Black Christmas.

Himuro, for advocating that classic, I forgive you watching an animu of your choice

Alien is also awesome

and to keep this on topic, The Shining is great largely for Nicholson's dead-on -- literally! lolz -- performance.

Yea Alien scared me like crazy. It might not be a traditional horror movie, but it's far more effective than any horror movie I've seen. I'm not afraid of some mummy with a kitchen knife "chasing" me. I know to NOT go in the house and NEVER listen to my white friends when they say it's safe. Jason never killed nobody on the bus :punch

But the idea of being impregnated by an insectoid freaks me out, especially since there are insects that actually do that to smaller animals.

Jacob's Ladder is great, but it's not in the same subgenre as Halloween.  It's like comparing apples to oranges.  Alien comes the closest, but it's really horror sci-fi.  I love Alien, though.

Eh, I think The Shining is okay.  It's not very faithful to the source material, in my opinion.

Clockwork is the best. Full Metal Jacket is best during the bootcamp stuff. The rest isn't as good.

Eyes Wide Shut rules too cause of all the orgy shit, especially in the Euro cuts. Nicole Kidman's ass looked delicious in it.

Willco: the source material for The Shining isn't very good. Frankly, I think slavish adherence to a novel's plot and characterizations typifies an unambitious director. Even Spielberg didn't stick to PKD's Minority Report, which is the case of a mediocre director translating from a brilliant writer's work, unlike the opposite with The Shining, and it turned out to at least be, well, accessible.

Spielberg is a mediocre director?  That's laughable.

I'm not saying King's novel is classic literature, but I felt the movie would've been better served to use more of its cues.  As is, it's just okay.  I find nothing frightening about it.
