Meh, I've read that at the time Sakaguchi and his crew were looking to make more different, personal tales in Final Fantasies, that would break free from the convention that was set in stone with Final Fantasy IV-- this game is still the one game upon which every typical modern console RPG is based
even if they gave up on these ideas, it shows up a bit in Final Fantasy VIII, where the characters' personal relations have way more emphasis than the actual plot... FFVIII gets a lot of hate because of stuff like that
and I read that they wanted to make FFX a game where Tidus was terribly ill and just looking to meet his foreign family before passing away with no "save the world" epic quest too, or some shit
