Credit Where Credit's Due

Since a couple people have asked me this in private, I figured I'd just post it here, and then update my FA user info to list it. The current list of games on which I have worked as a software engineer / programmer is:

Superman Return (X360, PS2, Xbox)
NCAA Football 2008 (X360, PS3)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 (X360, PS3)
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (Wii)
Guitar Hero: World Tour (Wii)

I have to say, it's kind of nice to know that I worked on the #5 best-selling game of December '08.

Everyone who can say that you worked on:

- The #5 best-selling game of December 2008
- The #7 best-selling game of January 2009
- The #10 best-selling game of February 2009
(source: NPD statistics)

Please raise your hand.

  Furry Goals for 2009
I'm about a month late on this one, but I figured it's about time to set out a list of furry-related goals for myself to 2009. After all, the first step to getting something done is laying out just what it is that you want done!

    - Attend Anthrocon 2009 as a Supersponsor, with an additional charitable donation of at least $500, preferably $1,000
    - Host the second annual "Furs In the Videogame Industry" panel at Anthrocon 2009
    - 2, possibly 3 nek0gami nek0gami commissions
    - 1 spunky spunky commission
    - 1 purplekecleon purplekecleon commission
    - 1 duo duo commission
    - 1 pinkuh pinkuh commission
    - Appear in one of ganador ganador's Peach Fuzz videos
    - Appear in at least one porn flash animation that is not of my own creation

Given the prospective bonuses that I'm looking at for my work on Guitar Hero: World Tour, I'd say that this is certainly all doable.

what an inspiration to us all

This is the prob:

Devs are lazy and unimaginative. Wii forces them into not being able to just take the game they already have and add some growth hormones. They hate this. The HD systems allow this, but the games are getting redundant. PC gamers may not like the truth, but the lack of genre and the ****-killer mentality has perpetuated and killed off some real gamers interest in genres they use to love.

And since most third parties are too pissed pants to do anything, it leaves the Wii up to easy cash cows of a different sort, shallow party games.

No system, in my opinion, is pushing the hobby where it needs to be pushed, but the Wii at least attempted to do so.  Unfortunately, fast cash ins come before long term stability of the business. So we get redundant HD games and shallow Wii games. Each system has a few bright spots, but nobody has the balls or vision to take the obvious step forward. We're being held hostage by artistic cowards.

I don't think they're lazy per say. They don't seem interested in the Wii's mechanics after all these damn years, and I can't blame them.

There's ideas to be done with the Wii mechanics and nobody is doing it, likely because it requires more testing and a different design flow. To me, that is laziness.

What is "the Wii"? Does that mean Nintendo? Because Nintendo is the one who pioneered the idea of selling cheap lazy shit on the Wii. We were getting GameCube port-ups and Wii Play from them while other devs were putting out Red Steel and Monkey Ball. Good or not, they were real ground up Wii efforts.

Laziness? Or budget constraints/no time etc.  Don't make stupid generalizations.

In fact I've never met this mystical "lazt developer" all the ones ones I know work harder than you ever will in your entire life.

Maybe I should refine my boredom  to designers. I don't aim to diss anyone for doing the job they're told to do.

Red Steel and Wii Play were attempts to use the controls to a greater extent, each with differing results in execution. There is opportunity for a bridging game between the simple accessibility of a Wii Play and the greater length and scope of an 'epic' title.

As to what the "Wii" is, it is the hardware itself, a system lacking in horsepower, but saying rather bluntly by this fact that it is attempting to force progress down an interface route. I would hope for the horsepower and interface both to be there, but I think a gaming companies' tendency is to just update what pre-exists. The lack of horsepower removes this crutch.

You still haven't told me how an inanimate object attempted to do something. And if you meant Nintendo, then my point still stands - they set the standard for lazy and other devs followed suit. They designed the marketing campaigns that almost exclusively targeted the casuals. What do you want devs to do?

And if you think that Wii Play qualifies as legitimate experimentation than who are you to diss third party shovelware? There is no difference.

Eh, in the 16bit days I was playing commercial stuff that was trying things out. Even a couple generations ago I saw those sort of things. If making a game has gotten so bloated that the money holders are tightly controlling any big idea to the point where this can no longer happen, then that that system is ultimately doomed. I don't get how you can be in this current economic climate where such blindness has resulted in big company failure and not be sitting their with the 'purse strings' and not consider its relativity to gaming. It's going to happen and indie gaming may be too small to provide the grand experience coupled with the new idea. There needs to be a middle ground for the hobby to do so, my imaginary 'bridging' game.

Wait, what port ups are you referring to? Stuff like Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis started showing up only recently.

As for the 'lazy developers', well the people actually developing the stuff I don't think are lazy. But it's pretty clear the higher up don't care about providing the budget to make adequate looking titles. Afteralll, no matter how 'lazy' some programmer or artist is, if the ones in charge ride their asses about making something look decent, I'm pretty sure they'd do it.

Basically if you want a sea change in gaming, you need to get rid of all the Nintendo fans that obsess over Smash, Counterstrike players, FF fangirls, Korean Starcraft obsessives, Madden dedicated, and anyone else who is a serious fan of gaming in the past oh i dunno 20+ years.

I am not sure you can't have both. I enjoy both. I am sure others would. I knew the female audience would show up as soon as they were acknowledged by a company. As well as the people lost in the transition to 3d.

Gaming is first and foremost a business that is dictated by a very real, very constraining economic model.  It has a mercurial yet slavishly nerdy fanbase that buys what it knows primarily (i can't stress this enough.  don't believe me? just look at Nintendo fans) by the time a game into the hands of a developer most of the core work has been done for them.  this is the broken part, but honestly, i don't have the faith in the marketplace to support ideas that need time and money to develop.  It's nigh impossible to sit a group of designers down for three months to test gameplay ideas while the rest of the team (artists, engineering, production, sound) spins their wheels.  most of the time it is crunching start to finish just to get a game that has years of precedent finished, let alone an untested one, with designers oftentimes taken on aspects of all disciplines just to get things done.  So if you want to blame someone, blame the people in charge of the purse strings.

Does the Wii's cheaper dev costs make it easier to do that, or is it moot because the purse string holders don't believe something that requires a different development approach won't sell regardless of console?

If you're referring to TP, I don't know if that's in the same area as the other stuff. Plus, I don't really see what more they could have done with the Wii port (as far as motion controls go, at least).
