the big thread of candy discussion/review
« on: March 01, 2007, 05:49:53 AM »
Okay, so, I think pretty much everyone knows by now that I acquired a multitude of Swiss candies from the lovely jarosh (:heart), and they arrived at my doorstep a few days ago. TVC suggested I review them, so I figured, what the hell, I'm bored and listening to music, so I'll give it a go.

So here's the picture of what I got.

Mmmmm

I actually haven't tried all of it yet (SHOCK, I know, especially coming from me). Buuut I don't have much else to do, so I'll at least review a few of them.

So anyway I guess I'll start with the candy, since everyone knows that the chocolate is good. Actually fuck it, I'm just gonna go clockwise from top row in the picture.

Schnüre Erdbeergeschmack - I'm eating this right now. This has some bizarre German name, but really it's just licorice rope. Actually I just opened this one an hour ago. I really like licorice, so I was hyped for this. On the front of the package it proudly exclaims that there is 15 METERS of licorice-y goodness in there. That's 50 feet or half the length of a blue whale, for those of you who don't know the metric system or who happen to have seen a blue whale in real life.

As for how it tastes, it's really good. It's a little bit chewier and not as sweet as your Twizzlers. I've never had Red Vines so I can't really compare it to that. I was a little disappointed that the rope is cut up into about meter-long sections and isn't actually one continuous 15-meter long rope, but after really considering this, it's probably for the best. Otherwise I would have no stopping point and would end up with the equivalent of 50 feet of licorice rope in my stomach.

Spruso - Okay, I'm not a big fan of hard candy. At all. I never go to the store with the intent of picking up hard candy, and really the only ones I can typically tolerate in large doses are cinnamon disks. But these, wow. These are really fucking good, and are one of my favourite things I recieved, definitely my favourite of the candy items. In fact, as I type this, I only have one left. It's just sitting here staring at me, wanting me to eat it :( But I'm trying to save it.

Anyway, these kinda taste citrusy, they come in 4 colours, pink, orange, green, and yellow. I guess the flavours themselves are nothing that remarkable. The best part is what's in the middle! It's this fizzy sour stuff that kinda seeps out as you suck on them. You can actually feel it fizzing on your tongue, it's awesome. Sooooo good. I gave one to my sister and she bit down on it without sucking on it at all. Well, all the filling came out at once and it was really sour and she made a pretty goddamn hilarious face. Owned. So yeah, these are really really good, and, uh, if you ever happen to have any, don't bite down on them!

Branche Classic - I was told what these are actually called, but I forgot. It was some crazy moon-word, unpronouncable in English. I prefer to just call them little pieces of heaven.

These really are so good I think it's actually a sin. It has to be. Basically, these are individually-wrapped tiny chocolate bars that have some sort of nuts (I'm gonna guess hazelnuts, I'm bad at this) sprinkled on the outside. There's 5 of them in the package and I actually gave one away which was the WORST DECISION OF MY ENTIRE LIFE. I really wish I could go back in time and get it back. It's just this really soft chocolate that's so rich and smooth and melts in your mouth and oh man oh man... :( I only have one left and I am actually afraid to eat it because I think I might commit murder to get my hands on more. THEY'RE THAT GOOD.

I don't even think I can describe in words how good these are. Fuck. They're so fucking good.

Okay this post is kinda long already, and I'm sorta sleepy because my belly is full of about 8 meters worth of licorice rope now. Mmmm. We'll see if anyone replies and maybe I'll post impressions of the other ones sometime tomorrow!

So basically the way to win over a chick is to send her a sack of cheap dollar candy as long as it has a bunch of foreign names?

Looks like Pocky might get me some sweet pussay after all.

There's also a white chocolate and maple syrup flavor (seasonal), cherry blossom flavor (seasonal), coffee flavor (maybe seasonal, I've only seen it once), wine flavors (never tried those), and sweet bean flavor (tastes like a regular kit kat to me, though).

That shit gets so exaggerated on Evilbore and GAF, cloudwalking...the only way to find that weird shit in Japan is if you go looking for it (really hard).  It's not something that's considered 'normal.'

That's like showing pictures of people from a Star Trek convention dressed as klingons and saying "This shit is why I hate America."

Best sweets I've ever had are marzipan and turron...both from Spain (though they didn't actually originate from there, but those are the varieties I've had).  Not exactly 'candies', though.

I first ate pop rocks in Spain (but they were called something else).  The best thing to do is to leave them fizzing in your tongue and then drink soda.  It's like an explosion in your mouth.  Awesome.

Also not exactly candy, but NUTELLA - ZOMG.

mmmm

also, here's a really great site with candy reviews: http://www.typetive.com/candyblog/
i think the author of the blog and i have the same candy tastes. i've tried a lot of different kinds/brands specifically because she liked them. shit i totally would have overlooked otherwise.

Shit, yes.  I love those too, especially that they come in all these different flavors so you never know what you're gonna get when you put one in your mouth.

I love malted milk balls, though...those may be my favorites...they don't sell those here.  Tell you what, cloud, you get me malted milk balls and I'll send you some weird flavored kit kats.

JESUS I WAS JUST ABOUT TO GO TO BED

...

malted milk balls are fucking awesome. the candy shop next door to my workplace has an AMAZING assortment of them, and i have tried pretty much every variety. i really like their "neapolitan" variety, which is chocolate malted milk balls with a shell that tastes like neapolitan ice cream and comes in the colours to match. but my FAVOURITE is the mint cream malt balls... holy fuck they're good. chocolate malt balls with just a hint of mint and they are sooooo smooth.

I'm dead serious about a malted milk ball/kit kat trade, btw.  Only you'd have to ship them to my workplace because I don't have  a mailbox in my apartment here.

Also, the best Kit Kat flavor is Hokkaido White. (Sweet milk, basically.)

i'll trade with anyone. just PM me. what kind of candy do you have in uhhhh, pennsylvania?

or like i said, if you can find salsa verde doritos there, that works too :drool :drool

We have Hershey's, which might sound silly since it's national. But Hershey is in Pennsylvania.

And we probably have some weirdo quaker shit.

That's ok tho.

I've been to Hershey Park.  They have one of the coolest arcade rooms I've ever seen, at least they did back in 1993 or so.  You could also play a full game of NBA Jam for $1.25  :D

The tour of the Hershey facilities was pretty fun as well, well worth it for a chocoholic.  The street lamps in that town are in the shape of Hershey Kisses  :-*
