An update at DVD Drama in France is reporting that Satoshi Kon's Paprika will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on 06/20/2007. Paprika is distributed by Sony in the US and appears to be involved with its distribution in France. Sony's current policy is that their films, if out of theatrical distribution, will be all-region on Blu-ray. They also design their releases to be "ported" between regions with relative ease, which means there is a very good chance of this being a US release this summer.

Kon on Blu-Ray! Hell yes!

Sony doesn't typically dub foreign films, but you never know. The film screened in Los Angeles last fall in Japanese with English subtitles.

I was really letdown by Tokyo Godfathers, can't really tell you why, I just felt it lacked the magic of Millenium Actress (best Kon film to date), Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue.

I can see how Westerners can find Paranoia Agent silly at times, but it's actually a very scathing social commentary on Japanese society since the bombing of Hiroshima. Even though I was a Psych/Soc. double major in college, I took a lot of history courses for fun, including one on post-war Japan. A lot of the things I learned about really resonated in PA. While I have my own negative reservations about anime, most of them were destroyed last year when I actually watched a few. When people think of anime they automatically think of shit like DBZ, which is a problem.

Castle in the Sky is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen. The musical score is brilliant. Princess Mononoke is another anime that's just amazing no matter how you spin things: it's an action/adventure anime with intelligence and meaning. Spirited Away is another beautiful movie that sucks you in.

He is the Kurosawa of anime, the only one to break into mainstream acceptance.

Kurosawa is the only real director of live action japanese films to gain widespread respect, the rest is seen as kaiju nonsense and samurai silly films.

It is just a fact of life you have to understand, anime outside of Miyazaki will be seen as childs stuff by the general public and the media. It is nothing to get defensive about, its a fact of life.

Well...yeah. Anime fans do themselves a disfavor when they attempt to compare great anime to great movies. But that doesn't make it irrelevent in terms of art or film. Snow White is considered to be one of the best films of all time.

Of course, i am just saying Himu's has got to stop being defensive. Anime outside of one director is seen as trash and there are many "fans" who make this view seem truthful(cosplayers, naruto freaks, etc) and he has to realize that is how all anime will be seen but a select few and has to accept that and not get upset when people bring it up. It is considered a "negative" and "weird" to enjoy anime by like 95% of the adult population and has to learn that a hobby of his is something strongly, strongly looked down upon and has to live with that.

It's a view that has been a stereotype on all Asian media since the end of WWII and likely is not going away.

Then how come the movie Grave of the Fireflies, directed by Isao Takahata showed critics that viable and mature animation was possible. Grave is not only considered a wonderful movie, it's considered one of the best war films of all time. That's not Miyazaki. Ghost in the Shell isn't Miyazaki, but that was one of the first anime films to break the ground. Akira wasn't Miyazaki, and it was one of the pioneers. Perfect Blue isn't Miyazaki.

Once again you show you know nothing. Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki's studio is the most revered anime studio, but to say they are the only source of mature animated film content that people celebrate is nothing short of ignorance.

He is not loved for being the first, he is considered in fil,m circles to be one of the greatest directors of all time and seven samurai is mentioned in the same breath as citizen kane most of the time. Not even 2001 has that respect. I think the film is somewhat over-rated(Seven Samurai) but I understand why it is known as probably one of the 3 most important films in the history of cinema.

And Himu Tezuka's work is NOWHERE near as well known as Miyazaki's work in America.

I am pretty sure more american familes watched his films than astroboy. Knowing of something and watching and enjoying something are vastly different things. Everyone knows of DBZ but that doesnt make it well respected.
