PSP Questions
« on: August 23, 2006, 07:55:48 PM »
Today I did an under-the-table side job which cost me nothing in materials, and netted me three bills .  Since this was basically free money aside from my time, I've decided to take the PSP plunge.  Evilbore, recommend me PSP games (I have enough for two full-price games) and accessories.  What do I need to fully exploit the potential of this device?

+1 for Exit, I'm also enjoying MGA2

I use my PSP more as a video player than anything else though, so the most necessary accessory for me has been a big memory stick

I already have a DS lite and several games.  I wanted the PSP for different reasons, and because I had the extra money to burn.  Exit sounds kinda cool, and the price is right, so I might give that a spin.  I bought the PSP and a 1 gig memory stick with my cash, and I traded in some stuff for SW: Battlefront 2 and the Capcom Classics collection.

Now, how do I rip DVDs and shit onto the stick?

Battlefront 2 is unimaginably awful. Get Daxter, Syphon Filter, Hot Shots Golf, Metal Gear Acid 2, Tekken DR, Wipeout Pure, Ridge Racer, Megaman Powered Up (or Maverick Hunter X), and/or Gradius Collection.

Listen to this man.

PSP is trash, at least until Silent Hill comes out. Get a DSLite and some games. You probably already have Tekken and Jack&Daxter on the PS2; no point in wasting monies on portable downgrades!

The DS doesn't have any games worth playing, though, unless you're into disposable mini-game nonsense or downgraded N64 ports!

And I enjoy it, but PSP has so many portable porn possibilities it isn't even funny.

I don't own a PS2.  I liked Battlefront on the Xbox, so I figured what the fuck.  It was only $17 used, and that was trade-in money so it didn't count.

None! There's very little PS2->PSP crossover outside of EA and Rockstar.

Metroid Hunters is appalling shite that wouldn't even fly in 1997. The online experience for the DS is retrograde. Mario Kart is a port, as is Advance Wars, at least by the standards you judge the PSPs "ports" by.

I have 9 PSP games, 5 DS games.

It comes down to this. Owning both is great. DS is fairly priced so its possible, for one.

Its just DS is in a situation where there are plenty of good games, but finding them is hard since distribution is ass. If you are going to get  DS or HAVE a DS, pre-order always.

PSP has plenty of good games too, but you can FIND them, I own a lot of great PSP games oh shit cats attacking my hands...anyway, people who say PSP has no good games are clearly fucking stupid.

People who say the DS is just a bunch of ports and rehash are right..almost everythin NOT from Nintendo is, and most of Nintendos stuff are sequels and 'ports' but its good ports ua777888damn fcat. I dunno, I mostly use my DS for GBA games anyway so whatever.

In short, own both if you can, you really cant go wrong. Games I recommend for PSP:

Wipeout Pure - 20 bux now
Hot Shots Golf Open Tee - 20 bux too!
Daxter - Masterful platforming, there is no equal. I am literally stunned by the quality.
Valkyrie Profile - Wont get a better RPG on PSP
Exit - Fun and challenging puzzle based gaming, and usually 20 bux
Tekken Dark Resurrection - Stunning fighter that really uses the PSP hardware. AIs a little weird tho in the Dojo
Gradius Collection - Not owning this is dumb, its an amazing collection of awesome.

17 indisputably good-to-awesome PSP games:

1. Exit
2. Megaman Powered Up
3. Maverick Hunter X
4. Ultimate Ghouls and Ghosts
5. Ridge Racers (not a port)
6. Wipeout Pure (not a port)
7. Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee (not a port)
8. Syphon Filter (not a port)
9. Tekken: Dark Ressurection (not a port)
10. Daxter (not a port)
11. Metal Gear Acid
12. Metal Gear Acid 2
13. Guilty Gear Judgment (expanded port from Xbox)
14. Valkyrie Profile (port from PSOne)
15. Capcom Classics Collection Remixed (different games from PS2)
16. Gradius Collection
17. Lumines

Okay games worth a look: Virtua Tennis, Field Commander, Legend of Heroes 1 and 2, Grand Theft Auto LCS, SFA3, Darkstalkers, Namco Battle Museum.

Awesome imports: Princess Crown, Star Soldier.

Note the extreme lack of PS2 ports!

Awesome DS games:

1. New Super Mario Brothers
2. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
3. Advance Wars DS
4. Viewtiful Joe DS (I will buy this soon)

Okay games: Sonic Rush (loathe the soundtrack, dig the mechanics)

Everything else is largely disposable stank. Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center styled shit are incredibly shallow and underdesigned compared to PC equivalents, Mario Kart DS is an unplayable ugly mishmash of poor design and sloppy networking, Metroid Prime Hunters would be barely tolerable to PC gamers back in '97, and the puzzle game detritus is bested by ANYTHING on PopCap or MSN Zone. Most of the shit on the DS wouldn't fly if it was on the $4.99 rack at Wal-Mart. Don't bring up the non-gaming crap, because I ain't your grandma or your ADD-addled kid sister.

Most DS fans lack any real experience within gaming because they refuse to play a PS2 or a PC, where most of gaming's quality resides. That's the price they pay for being Nincore or subcasual gamers.

I anticipate FF3 and Yoshi's Island 2.

Wow.  I have a ton of Golden Age Comics (1930s - 50s) that I've scanned or downloaded over the years, saved on disc.  I just tried out the PSP photo viewer with a few.  Wow.  So clear and readable, and the viewer controls are excellent and intuitive.  That's worth $200 to me right there.

I have the feeling you and I are going to be very good friends, PSP.

Syphon Filter
Wipeout Pure

The only two "must buy" games I've played.  Maybe Lumines if you aren't going to get it on live or whatever.

Daxter bored the shit out of me, but I only played it maybe an hour and a half.  Wannabe conker, without the charm.

Also, DVD ripping = easy.  I don't know why everyone was complaining about how complicated it is on every site I checked out.  I ripped a bunch of clips this afternoon, and an episode of Band of Brothers.

So far Daxter is a great platformer which is nearly ruined by stupid, frustrating minigames.  I'd like to use my psp as a bludgeon on the fucking idiot who made that "steam" minigame.

the mini-games are optional, and the driving portions of the game arent hard. SO im not sure what youre talking about, the boss-fights arent even really mini-games.

Steam dial thing took a few tries but its something to beat. I enjoyed the challenge. Considering the game gives you unlimited lives I think there needs to be challenge SOMEWHERE.

Every minigame I've played so far is mandatory - the Matrix "dream" and the "steam" scenario.  All they are is "tap this button when it flashes on the screen," which is just boring repetition no matter what movie parody you sling over it.  If I want to play Simon, I'll go buy Simon.  It's gamestopping, to me at least.  I'll agree the infinite lives make it too easy.  It would have been better had they implemented a system of "earning extra lives" or at the start of the game gave you the choice of how many total lives you'd get.  Infinite lives make the deaths seem kind of pointless.  Still a good game, but fuck Matrix parodies and reflex button mashing.

the matrix dream was manditory? I didnt fail it so I wouldnt know, the first time you do that game its not hard, and the games after that ARE manditory.

If the steam game was boring it was 10 seconds of boring, unless of course you are bad at it, then its challenging and maybe frustrating.

It took me five tries to get the steam gauges aligned, but when I did *shrug*. The matrix game isnt button mashing, it requires precise timed taps. IN fact if you mash you get dinged for not hitting the right button, you get dinged for even hitting the right button at the wrong time.

Now ive been accused of sucking at games, but while the steam gauge 'boss fight' was challenging, the matrix game was not.

By "button mashing," I mean the game tells you what button to mash, and there's no strategy involved.  I just don't like minigames like that, especially ones which completely fail you at one misstep (for me, usually the very last press).  They're just very incongruous additions to the adventure/platforming main action aspects of the game.  As for the Matrix game, I kept having to replay it because it took me forfuckingever to figure out that you had to tap the button when the enemy crossed over it - I was tapping it as soon as I saw the button pattern appear.  It was never explained in-game.  Basically, I like the game a lot, but I hate the filler.  Give me an extra level, or a time challenge, but fuck all the "follow the bouncing ball" type shit.
