In this thread, after I correct him that Russia doesn't have more military aircraft than the US, he tries to argue that the former Soviet Republics still basically operate under the same military "umbrella".

Well, that's just fucking wrong, considering half of the former Soviet republics have joined or stated their intention to join, NATO.

Does Phoenix just really not like being challenged and proven wrong that he has to conjure up any argument he can to get back on top of the debate?

I mean, I like him most of the time and he's knowledgeable as hell, but when you catch him saying something silly it kinda shows how stubborn he can be.
