Oh how I long for cartoony next-gen games...
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:56:27 PM »
After having viewed all the recently released trailers for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games, it's kinda sad to realize that most every game nowadays seem to only be about realism. It's like, everything is concocted to emulate some kind of action movie, and not particularly great ones at that in most cases. While technically solid, nearly all Xbox 360 games look like souped-up PC games with cosmetic blur and bump-mapping effects to me. Honestly, though most PS3 games strike me as being slightly more CGI-ish, most of them are about as realistic-looking, but pretty austere too.

It's weird that what impressed me the most visually are the trailers for Lego Star Wars 2 on Xbox 360. Can you imagine how sweet will these kinds of cartoony games going to be? The amazing GPUs in both PS3 and Xbox 360 and the high amount of RAM that these consoles contain enables incredibly sleek and solid fantasist environments and characters. They can display an incredibly wide color gamut. The cosmetic effects of these cards that doesn't look too hawt on realistic games really serve something here. Can't fucking wait. Realistic games always lose their effect quickly anyway, they don't pass the test of time very well, whereas naive art never dies. Imagine the colorful Japanese RPGs!

For this reason alone it's such a shame that the Wii is going to be powered by severely crippled hardware components. IMAGINE how marvelous all the fantasist Nintendo fanchises would've looked in full 720p glory with all this graphical pizazz! :(

Yeah I've seen it, it looks hawt

however I don't like when games try to copy a movie's allure... I'm really sick of all the movie/game comparisons in fact, it's time to give the seventh art a finger

I feel the same exact way.  I have been utterly bored by almost everything I looked at from Next-Gen, excluding Nintendo's stuff.

maybe the direction to take for more realistic action games is that of Crackdown

it's a pretty good combination of realism and cartoon flair, and it doesn't try to be technically as good as possible

and I REALLY think that games take themselves too seriously, this got to stop... I love when you hear pompous heavy metal music or sappy songs instead of the same generic Danny Elfman OST crap, or a bunch of licensed songs

games should have more clever/innocent humor too

I agree. Although games like Gears of War and Resident Evil 5 are some of my most anticipated next gen titles, I also find myself craving for something different from an art perspective. Games like Viva Pinata and Crackdown have really impressed me; they demonstrate that "next gen" is not just about more polygons or bumb mapping.

Looking back at the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox, I can't help but still be an awe at the graphical style of something like Wind Waker, and more recently Okami. Now imagine those games done with the power of next gen technology. Okami on the PS3 or Xbox 360 could really be an amazing sight to see.

I think you guys are on to something. All the "realistic" games start to look the same. With the cartoony look, it allows for greater flexibility in art.

TF2 has fantastic visuals.  Beyond a certain roundness to the models I don't really see the Incredibles comparison, but hey.

Look at the Lego Star Wars 2 trailer:

it's just so sleek looking and solid, better than all those generic science-fiction and war shooters even if technically they're more efficient
