After having viewed all the recently released trailers for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games, it's kinda sad to realize that most every game nowadays seem to only be about realism. It's like, everything is concocted to emulate some kind of action movie, and not particularly great ones at that in most cases. While technically solid, nearly all Xbox 360 games look like souped-up PC games with cosmetic blur and bump-mapping effects to me. Honestly, though most PS3 games strike me as being slightly more CGI-ish, most of them are about as realistic-looking, but pretty austere too.
It's weird that what impressed me the most visually are the trailers for Lego Star Wars 2 on Xbox 360. Can you imagine how sweet will these kinds of cartoony games going to be? The amazing GPUs in both PS3 and Xbox 360 and the high amount of RAM that these consoles contain enables incredibly sleek and solid fantasist environments and characters. They can display an incredibly wide color gamut. The cosmetic effects of these cards that doesn't look too hawt on realistic games really serve something here. Can't fucking wait. Realistic games always lose their effect quickly anyway, they don't pass the test of time very well, whereas naive art never dies. Imagine the colorful Japanese RPGs!
For this reason alone it's such a shame that the Wii is going to be powered by severely crippled hardware components. IMAGINE how marvelous all the fantasist Nintendo fanchises would've looked in full 720p glory with all this graphical pizazz!
