I saw it last night.

I didn't think it turned particularly bad until Spidey sheds the Symbiote and Venom emerges.  From that point on, the movie tanks, switching back and forth between characters frantically trying to pull together some sort of hackneyed climax and resolution and we get at least two horrible deus ex machinas out of it and an ending that rivals Hulk's in terms of anti-climax and idiocy.

Nearly everything before that, I enjoyed for the most part.  The pivotal moment where the relationship crap gets most annoying, Bruce Campbell appears in a great little character to help us forget.  Symbiote Peter Parker is hilarious and provides for the funniest scenes in the entire series.  It keeps up well with the spirits of the other movies.

As I was walking out of the theater, everyone with a voice seemed to think it was bad, shitting on their childhood, worst movie of the year, disappointmenton, whatever.  All of my friends hated it.  I don't think it's going to be very hard to nail down a generalized stance for the die-hard Spider-man fans.

Not really.  I'm going in with the expectations that it should be as good as Spider-Man, which is not Spider-Man 2.

You also said you expected it to get a RT score around the same as Batman Begin, which is a 84. Spidey 3 is like 20 points under that. (62 right now)

Wow I have to take my brothers to see the movie today. I'm just going to drop them off, but I didn't expect that they were going to see it. One of them is meeting some of his friends there, and I'm wondering if they even have the tickets bought already. If not I bet they're sold out

Only because the early negative reviews had said that it was on par with the original, which still scored quite highly on the meter.  I figured being as good as Spider-Man would be enough to merit a rating in the 80s, but I was wrong. :(

I guess this is an obvious case of following up something hugely successful and missing the target by a wide margin leading to real disappointment.

Saw the midnight showing, thought it was downright awful in most parts.  A lot of unintentional comedy, the crowd was laughing at spots that I can only assume weren't meant to be funny.

75% of the film was just awkward and uncomfortable to watch, IMO.  A complete 180 from Spider-Man 2.

Fandango isn't in charge of the rating - it's user oriented.  And yeah, I think this sequel will be hecka frontloaded.  I don't expect it to have legs.

My money is on Transformers being the next Spider-Man.

yeah its a conspiracy they wont tell you not to go see this movie. Honestly all those things are "easily adjustable" in our theater we have screener's from a research company that will have people rate movies before they see it and things like that. I dont trust reviews anymore. Best to just see it if your interested.

I'm so happy I'm on call though. Not one theater has called and had problems today. And I'm able to relax and get payed.

Spider-Man 3 (Raimi, 2007) - 6.5/10

When I walked out of Spider-Man 2 (all 4 times!) 3 years ago, I was absolutely floored. Not only was that film my favorite superhero movie ever (it still is, and by a landslide), but it left me so excited for the final movie in the trilogy, and the greatness it would hold. I mean, how could they mess this up? The cast and crew was largely the same, as was the writing team, and this was the epic finale to the series. So Spider-Man 3 would be the comic book movie to end all comic book movies, right?

Unfortunately, no, it is not. Irrelevant, inconsequential and unengaging are the three words I would use to describe Spider-Man 3. It is not a bad movie but any stretch, but it simply fails on every level that the original, and especially the sequel, excelled on. Whereas Spider-Man 2 had me hooked from the outset and took me on an epic roller-coaster of emotion and thrills, Spider-Man 3 seemed to just plod around for 2.5 hours, merely existing, occasionally hitting the right note, but mostly just plowing ahead.

What went wrong? Well, there are two big issues with the film. First, let's blame Marvel boss Avi Arad for making director Sam Raimi shoehorn Venom into the film. The movie was already at content overload without his entrance, and with him in the film, there are about five subplots being juggled, and none of them are fully developed or satisfactorily concluded. Had the film been without Venom, his storyline plus the symbiote storyline could have been cut completely, and we would be left with a much leaner film, which could be much more fleshed out. The second issue is the writing. The film is totally bipolar, and has more plot threads that could ever be given room to breathe in 2.5 hours. Alvin Sargeant, who did a re-write of the first film to make it passable, and wrote the excellent screenplay for the second film, seems to have been inexplicably made an outcast, serving only to polish off the Raimi brothers' script, instead of being an integral part of the writing staff from day one. Most of the great touches in Spider-Man 2, which I fully attribute to Sargeant, are sadly missing here.

Up to this point, you may think I hated the film. But the truth is, amongst all the elements I hated about the film, there is still a lot to love here. The cast is in top form here, with the real notable performance coming unexpectedly from James Franco, who I felt excelled as the conflicted Harry Osborn. Tobey Maguire was also as enjoyable as ever in the Peter Parker role. Bruce Campbell's trademark cameo is his best one yet, and totally hilarious. I enjoyed Christopher Young's work on the score, especially his new themes for Sandman and Venom. The main titles once again were excellent, and totally succeeded in ramping up my excitement. The special effects and the action scenes in the film didn't disappoint, and there are several breath-taking set pieces littered throughout the film. Another great element remaining from the previous films is the humour. Spider-Man 3 in particular seems to go for even more laughs than its predecessors, and most of the time the gags work. Finally, I cannot conclude this review without making mention of easily the best scenes in the entire film, the "Saturday Night Fever" montage. Yes, this film features a scene which makes the "Raindrops" scene in Spider-Man 2 look downright tame. Kudos to Sam Raimi for having the balls to put such an extended scene in a major studio motion picture, and even bigger kudos to Tobey Maguire for taking that scene and running with it. I haven't laughed as much in ages as I did last night at Peter Parker strutting his stuff and gyrating his pelvis in downtown New York.

Spider-Man 3 is totally entertaining, if wholly unengaging and vastly inferior to its predecessor. The film simply tries to be too much, and accomplish too much in 2.5 hour running time. It saddens me to see a trilogy I love dearly, one that hit such highs, go out on such a middle-of-the-road note, but such is the case. We'll always have Spider-Man 2.

Solo your views sound EXACTLY like mine.  :lol Same problems and enjoyed the same parts. Except I gave it two points higher.

It is VERY obvious the Raimi's wrote this movie unlike the last two. It has a lot more quirky qualities to it.

Yeah, I may have been a bit harsh, Cheebs. I dont think it'll ever hit an 8.5 with me, but repeat viewings may get it over 7. I DEFINATELY am going for 1-2 more viewings though, because I am still not sure if I can even remember everything that occurred, as everything flew by so fast.

My initial thought is that I will like this one much more upon repeated viewings, once I get the "its no S-M2, or even S-M1" out of my system.

One thing is you gotts let go of Spidey 2 and just go for Raimi's insane quirkyness which is ALL OVER in this movie. The movie had like what 50 musical numbers? It was nearing on being a musical but it was fun.

Spidey 3 and the raindrops scene in spidey 2 (and I thought THAT was over-the top before I saw this movie  :lol) makes me want a comedy/musical from Raimi.

It'd be brilliant and I don't even like musicals.

Okay I saw Spiderman 3.  I'm not sure what to say.  I can say it is better than Spiderman 2, and that is mainly for one reason: both were camp, with bad lines and total cheese, but only the third movie fully embraces this while Spiderman 2 acts like it is serious.  S3's best parts are when it totally enjoys how cheese it is. I could have thrown all the emotional stuff away.  The only thing I cared about was
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Harry Osborne dying, because his character was the best in this film and I literally LOLed at his grin and wink at the cafe because of the damned GAF gif
[close]

I'd rank them Spiderman > Spiderman 3 > Spiderman 2.
